To be so annoyed at our neighbours?!

Esmesgirls · 04/07/2015 11:57

Our neighbours are usually quite nice, they have two teenage boys and we talk to them about once a week over the garden fence, if we see each other around, ect.
However, today they're having a 4th of July party! I know they're not American as the mother was complaining about the black Friday sales a while back. They've been up since 6 sorting out their garden and woke my two youngest DDs (3yo and 2week old) at half past!
AIBU to think a) 4th of July has no place here, and b) they should be more respectful to us on a Saturday morning?

YABVU. Having a party in your garden on a summer Saturday is a perfectly normal, reasonable thing to do.

LegoComplex · 04/07/2015 12:00

well.. they have free will to throw a party for whatever reason surely? so i think yabu except for waking your dc up that early, but if they're normally nice i'd just accept this as a one off and not cause a stir about it.

BitchBags · 04/07/2015 12:00

Yabu. They should have warned you in advance if they knew they would be making so much noise at 6 am but it is their garden and they can do what they wish in it

DurhamDurham · 04/07/2015 12:01

It would be annoying if they did it every single weekend, as a one off you just have to remember that having a party outside in the summer is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It might have been a bit unreasonable for them to be making enough noise to wake your children that early but maybe your children are just really light sleepers. I wouldn't want to fall out with my neighbours for something so very trivial, save your battles for the big things.

PurpleDaisies · 04/07/2015 12:02

The reason for the party is totally none of your business.

I'd have been annoyed at being woken up so early but as a one off I wouldn't bother saying anything about it. If it becomes a regular thing that's a different story.

FenellaFellorick · 04/07/2015 12:03

They will be using 4th July as an excuse for a party on a lovely sunny Saturday. If they want to call it a party to celebrate when America gave us the boot Grin that's up to them.

They are being very very inconsiderate to be faffing noisily from 6am.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2015 12:06

They're probably just using that theme as a way of livening up a weekend barbecue.

Your sleep deprived, so it's a bigger deal than it should be, to you.

If your baby gets Colic or teeths badly (wouldn't wish it upon anyone obviously), then everyone is going to be up late/early.

It's all just part of life.

Floralnomad · 04/07/2015 12:07

As its a one off I'd just let it go , no doubt your dc will at some point in the future make noise at a time that the NDN considers inconsiderate - maybe they have american friends / relatives .

CardinalRed · 04/07/2015 12:08

No, they are not being unreasonable for having a party in their garden during the summer.
You are being unreasonable and rather unpleasant for being anti-American.bif they want to celebrate the 4th of July what possible reason can have to object to it?
What were they doing that made so much noise it woke up your children? Do they never make any noise early in the morning?
Are you invited to the party?

Esmesgirls · 04/07/2015 12:56

We are invited, yes, but have a christening this afternoon. They were moving the barbeque and managed to drop it down the stairs so it made a huge bang.
I'm not anti- American either! My best friend for 30+ Years is American, I'm just confused why they're celebrating it over here!

BabyFeets · 04/07/2015 12:58

There's nothing wrong with them having a party for whatever reason but they can keep the noise down until around 11am

SmashleyHop · 04/07/2015 13:02

I wish I was celebrating today... Morning sickness has me pinned to the couch.

In honor of our special relationship...

NerrSnerr · 04/07/2015 13:03

Yeah the bastards, having a party in their own garden and choosing their own theme. Bet they dropped the barbecue on purpose just to annoy you too. Fuckers.

coolaschmoola · 04/07/2015 13:09

Perhaps you should be a bit more respectful of their choices and their right to do what they like in their own garden... Hmm

I doubt they dropped the bbq on purpose - so the noise was accidental.

I'm sure your lovely new baby has disturbed them more than once so YABU to expect them never to accidentally disturb you.

l'm not anti American should bloody well hope not Confused

You are not the party police!

Goshthatsspicy · 04/07/2015 13:40

the theme of July 4th is really naff

Okay...

There really is an anti American feeling here, isn't there? Hmm

AnyoneForTennis · 04/07/2015 13:44

God you sound 'delightful' Hmm

Anyway, bet your kids noise has disturbed them on more than one occasion, as a pp already said. Think you need to get over yourself

geekymommy · 04/07/2015 14:09

Complaining about Black Friday doesn't necessarily make someone not American. I'm American, and I don't care for Black Friday sales. I stay away from them, because I don't like shopping in crowds.

That said, I'm not doing much of anything for the Fourth of July this year. Being 37 weeks pregnant means I'm not doing much of anything I don't have to.

CardinalRed · 04/07/2015 14:18

Okay, so the noise came from an accident. Yes, it is very unreasonable to complain about that. They hardly did that on purpose. Do you go round and apologise every single time one of your children make a noise?

very unreasonable to complain because they are having a 4th of July theme - it has no negative impact on you.

It comes across that you don't like them. It was very nice of them to invite you and I hope they don't read your critically intolerant post about them.

CardinalRed · 04/07/2015 14:19

Oh, and as you brought up the matter of respect - why not respect their right to have whatever sort of party they like without making snide remarks about it?

How can you possible equate accidentally dropping a barbeque with not respecting your neighbours?

TheCatsMother99 · 04/07/2015 14:42

YABU.

Noise at 6am, yes I'm with you on that one. But if they want to have a party for whatever reason then leave them to it.

sliceofsoup · 04/07/2015 14:50

I would love to have a 4th of July party. I might do it next year. Made plans for this evening now so can't.

They dropped the barbecue, so what? It could have been anything, but because it was a barbecue that means they are inconsiderate?

YABU OP. You have small kids now, as do I, and I get that its a pain when noises outside of your control interfere with their sleep, but live and let live.

geekymommy · 05/07/2015 02:31

Just be glad if they didn't set off fireworks. Don't get me wrong, I like fireworks, but other than sparklers, I leave them to the professionals, and I wish everybody else would do the same. I especially dislike DIY firework displays now that I've got a toddler I'm trying to get to sleep. Yes, I know, I don't like Black Friday sales or DIY fireworks, they'll probably revoke my citizenship soon.

SilverNightFairy · 05/07/2015 02:36

I'm just heading off to bed after the first half of a fab July 4 party..
