To be fed up of having to wear leggings in hot weather!

Okay, I'm fat. I'm a size 20/22. I feel beautiful but obv have points of my body I HATE, like my legs and my arms. I have cankles!

I wear vintage dresses daily, I don't own any jeans ect

But I am sick to death of feeling like I have to hide my fat legs/ cover my arms up because I don't want to have the mick taken out of me.

So what does everyone wear under dresses?

Currently wearing leggings

You do live in a very odd place...........

If you wear leggings under your dresses because of chaffing then def try some of the anti-chaff stuff recommended, because it's so bloody painful. If you are wearing them because of your cankles/arms, then truly, I would try to 'feel the fear' and bare them anyhow. Can you remember anyone you saw out and about yesterday, in particular their legs/arms? Can you remember anyone's leg/arms earlier on today? The more you bare your legs/arms in this weather, hopefully the more you will get used to it. And you will definitely be far more comfortable. And why should random strangers be given the right to dictate how cool you can be in hot weather.

I'm a size 12 and get ridiculous comments about my bum, from stupid lads in cars when I'm out walking/jogging. Ignorant twats will always find something to show off to their mates about, regardless of your shape/size imo, so you may as well please yourself.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 03/07/2015 21:16

Why would you make yourself uncomfortable like that? Find some culottes or shorts and cool off. I live in Texas, it's very hot and everyone wears shorts, from size 0 to size 30+....

TheBreeze · 03/07/2015 21:22

It's not just bigger people who feel self conscious in the hot weather, I have thin calves and ankles, but whopping great wrinkly knees which look awful, also my skin is dry and wrinkly around my ankles so that is not too glamorous either. I also have a swollen and bruised sprained foot at the moment to top it all off. I'm sure if you wear a dress just on or below the knee you will look fine.

bertsdinner · 03/07/2015 21:29

Very few people have a perfect body, so I would just ditch the leggings.
If you dont like maxi skirts, what about midi length? Theres quite a good selection out at the moment.

cantbelievemyeyes · 03/07/2015 21:32

I'm the same size as you, love my pretty dresses which I generally wear with leggings, and don't own trousers/ shorts etc. I do feel a bit self conscious at times but I have been bare legged all week- it's just too bloody hot to do otherwise. When I go on holiday I don't give a shit, but I have had my share of abuse from strangers at home over the years so I understand your concerns. BTW, the people who are mean have always been adult men who are very pissed. Most people don't bat an eyelid.

I have tried various creams, anti-chafing gels etc and none of them work for me. They tend to turn into a slimy, disgusting mess which is as unpleasant as the chafing I was trying to avoid. Years ago I bought some cotton cycling short-type knickers from M&S which are spot on, and although they're getting on a bit they're still going. You could do something similar by cutting the legs off an old pair of leggings so they're cycling short length too (I'll be trying this tonight actually, not sure if I'll need to hem/ wonderweb them or not).

Also bear in mind how the fabric on your dresses behaves in wind. I've got a couple of dresses I can't wear bare legged because the wind catches them and exposes way more than I'd like.

A final tip is to wear a slip under your dress. I have a couple of dresses that are just an inch or so shorter than I'm comfortable with bare legged. I bought some lace trimmed slips for £4 from Matalan which just add a tiny bit of length at the bottom. They don't seem to blow up if caught by wind, and don't make me feel hot.

I'm a size 8/10 and I usually have to wear leggings under dresses. I'm tall and slim but I have horrendous stretch marks and some cellulite on my thighs that I'm self conscious about.
This week though I've worn shorts and dresses as its just been too hot!

Notagainandagain1 · 03/07/2015 21:37

You do live in a very odd place...........

In a sizist world, same as you Grin

Runningupthathill82 · 03/07/2015 21:46

Definitely ditch the leggings. Far too hot! And they only draw attention to legs IMO, making them look bigger than they are.
Instead, maxi dresses, culottes, lightweight harem pants etc will look lovely.

Jelliebabe1 · 03/07/2015 23:26

I'm normally a 20-22 ( preggo at the mo) and regular dress wearer! Ditch the leggings! No one really pays anyone else that much attention. Think back did you really notice the state of anyones legs today??? The only time I wesr leggings under a dress is when it's short or bliddy freezing!

munchkin2902 · 03/07/2015 23:38

I'm the same. I hate summer because I can't wear my black opaques.

cardibach · 03/07/2015 23:42

I wear Bandalettes (www.bandelettes.com) to prevent chafing. Much cooler than comfort shorts. I'm currently size 18/20, but have been top end of 22 and have never been aware of anyone staring/pointing/laughing/making comments. Maybe I have a 'piss off you twat' face which prevents it...cultivate one of those and ditch the leggings OP!

ShortLashes · 04/07/2015 01:16

Thanks for the tip Cardibach- have ordered some of those so I can ditch the hot cotton shorts! They currently have a code for 15% off too

frikadela01 · 04/07/2015 01:28

cardibach how do they stay in place? They look like they could roll down at any moment.

SleepShake · 04/07/2015 01:40

Just wear what you want OP.

Maxi dresses or kaftans (loose fitted ones) can be very comfy and cool in this weather.

AlpacaLypse · 04/07/2015 01:45

YY all the posters about leggings in hot weather... all it says to me is 'I am excruciatingly embarrassed about something or other to do with the lower half of my anatomy and would you please not look, and if you do look, please don't' judge.'

Fair enough, I'm a MNetter and therefore will not judge (although I will probably have looked...)

My figure has never fully recovered from twins. None of my business what anyone else's is.

cardibach · 04/07/2015 15:14

frikadela you have to measure and order the right size. I worried about the rolling and took comfort shorts in my bag the first time I wore them! They have that sticky stuff like on strapless bras top and bottom and somehow they just work! I can imagine they'd be shot of you weren't honest about the humungous size of the thigh though...

cardibach · 04/07/2015 15:14

Shit if*

frikadela01 · 05/07/2015 10:45

Hmmm might give them a punt then... although measuring my thigh terrifies me... is their a tape measure long enough I wonder Grin

MamaLazarou · 05/07/2015 11:05

YANBU, ditch the leggings. Leggings under a summer dress on a hot day just scream 'Look at my legs! I am ashamed of them!'. No-one's eyes are going to explode if they see a less-than-perfect pair of pins. You should be able to wear whatever the hell you like. It's not like every thin person is an image of perfection.

TinyMonkey · 05/07/2015 11:28

Buy some Bodyglide. It's not sticky, it's not slimy, it goes on dry (bit like a stick deodorant). Voila, no chafing.

Lurknomoreladies · 05/07/2015 12:47

I was once told it was just as vain and self indulgent to spend hours worrying about people looking at my legs because I was fat as it would be to spend hours obsessing over how good I looked. This was by a friend who made me buy my first ever adult knee length skirt. Have never looked back and I really have horrible legs. The thing is though, anyone who is small minded enough to judge me for having fat legs is a) not someone I want anything to do with and b) has far too much time on their hands and should really get a life.
OP, and anyone else struggling with this, please ditch the leggings!

BelaLugosisShed · 05/07/2015 13:12

Another chunky of thigh here, I got some cheap cotton cycle shorts from amazon , they are very thin and comfy, much more so than comfort shorts made out of nylon, I went for 2 sizes bigger, so a 22-24 instead of 16-18, so they aren't skin tight.
