To be fed up of having to wear leggings in hot weather!

Okay, I'm fat. I'm a size 20/22. I feel beautiful but obv have points of my body I HATE, like my legs and my arms. I have cankles!

I wear vintage dresses daily, I don't own any jeans ect

But I am sick to death of feeling like I have to hide my fat legs/ cover my arms up because I don't want to have the mick taken out of me.

So what does everyone wear under dresses?

Currently wearing leggings

Wear what you feel comfortable in but if you are really self conscious a maxi dress is your friend.

yumyumpoppycat · 01/07/2015 10:29

I normally wouldn't notice people's arms etc, but today I wore a strappy top and was really self conscious and as a result became aware of what other people were wearing, but I think generally people wouldn't notice unless they were self conscious themselves; which is maybe why you think people would notice you iyswim
I will be changing into a slightly less revealing but still sleeveless top later though - I need the back coverage!

Charlesroi · 01/07/2015 10:29

Get some of that fake tan on your arms and legs - it makes everything look better. Even cankles Smile
It does sound like you are worrying too much. I'm sure people won't be pointing at you or thinking anything beyond "that's a nice dress".

yumyumpoppycat · 01/07/2015 10:33

also pick the most flattering of your dresses, I tried two on yest - one looked not so great but the other fine and there were just subtle differences

sashh · 01/07/2015 10:34

Just ditch the leggings.

If you really feel the need to cover your ankles get a maxi dress or invest in a decent suspender belt and wear stockings. It does make a difference (have worked in hospitals with thick hot uniform and had to have legs covered).

WorraLiberty · 01/07/2015 10:35

“You wouldn't worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.” ? Eleanor Roosevelt

Never a truer word ^^

Honestly OP. Most people are just going about their day to day business and trying to cope with the heat themselves.

Lucked · 01/07/2015 10:38

I think you are probably drawing attention to your legs because of the leggings, people will be looking and just wondering why would you in this heat. Also people can still see the shape of your legs in leggings so you aren't actually hiding anything anyway.

I don't have shapely ankles, my skin is pale and a bit dry but it's knee length for me today.

Lateswim16 · 01/07/2015 10:42

Love the quote ^^.

So true. Op just wear what you want and fuck the world. IucwimGrin

InanimateCarbonRod · 01/07/2015 10:46

Evans comfort shorts!

loveareadingthanks · 01/07/2015 13:00

Leggings won't make cankles disappear. They're just cankles with leggings. Ditch the leggings, be comfortable, and fuck what anyone thinks anyway.

crazykat · 01/07/2015 13:27

I've just bought some cotton shorts designed to wear under dresses, £4 from h&m, they're brilliant. They're invisible under my knee length dresses and stop my thighs rubbing. I'm a size 14/16, would be a 14 but I've got chunky legs which are always a size bigger than the rest of me even when I was a 10/12.

Wear what makes you comfortable, especially in this heat. I hate my legs as they're chunky which means I usually cover them so they're so white they practically glow. I cba with worrying about what others think anymore, I spent last summer covering my legs and got so hot o felt ill some days. This year I've said sod it and I'm wearing dresses or cropped trousers and I'm trying mother to care what anyone else thinks.

LovelyFriend · 01/07/2015 13:33

get some of this brilliant stuff and ditch the leggings.

We all need a breeze in this heat.

ScorpioMermaid · 01/07/2015 13:43

i cant really help to be honest but just wanted to sympathise. I'm usually the same size as you but I'm also heavily pregnant at the mo (i don't do maternity, just up a size or 2). I wore a vest top and loose elasticated floral trousers (like hareems but without the drop crotch) and my trusted birkis yesterday. I normally wear a thin/ short sleeved cardi too but didn't bother. today I'm in a maxi dress. I wear leggings under shorter dresses too. It's not my cankles that bother me but my fat knees. they are repulsive and must be covered. Sad

Skinheadmermaid · 01/07/2015 13:43

Wear cropped leggings? Or dresses to the knee?
I know how you feel though. I've put on a stone and I still have loose skin from previous weight loss. Theres no way i'm wearing any sort of dress or shorts. My knees are fat and wrinkly and my legs have the texture of day old porridge in a string bag.

ginmakesitallok · 01/07/2015 13:44

I'm a size 18-20 and am in a short ish dress today. I'm the size I am, whether I'm wearing leggings/shorts/dress whatever. I'd rather be comfortable than try to hide myself. If anyone has a problem with how I look, well that's their problem not mine!

Topseyt · 01/07/2015 14:16

Wear what you feel comfortable in and sod everyone else.

I an a similar size to you. I wear shorts when not at work.

I have the added problem of being rather a short arse too. I am short legged, meaning maxi dresses look awful on me, and I would trip over in them. As they sweep the floor.

I wear shorts (flappy ones) and cropped, loose fitting linen trousers. Cropped do not look very cropped on me - being a shorty, they look nearly full length.

They are light and airey though. Who cares what others think. Their problem.

frankie001 · 01/07/2015 14:34

I'm a size 22. Normally live in leggings and dresses. Today was just too hot and based on this thread I've said fuck it. Vest top and knee skirt. Anyone has a problem with my flesh, it's up to them.

pollythepolarbear · 03/07/2015 20:00

I'm the same size as you. This week I've been wearing a linen tunic dress that ends just at my knees and bare legs. I wore Evans Comfort Shorts underneath to stop chafing. A few years ago I would never have worn this outfit. The more you get your legs out the easier it is. A bit of fake tan can also work wonders (although my legs are still very pale). Go for it!

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 03/07/2015 20:08

Look at Pamper and Curves, and check out the author of it (it's a fashion blog) wearing vintage dresses, and looking really fabulous. I started reading it a couple of years ago when it used to be Betty Bee (I think). She always looks so fabulous, and it might just fit with your 'look' and push you into ditching the leggings.

Purplepoodle · 03/07/2015 20:12

Linen trousers - narrow fitting to replace leggings

WishITookLifeSeriously · 03/07/2015 20:18

I am a short size 22 and was having palpitations about wearing a knee length dress to work on Wednesday when it was scorching. I work in a school so expected sniggers but loads of students said they liked my dress! One of them even said I looked sophisticated!
Wear what makes you happy.

MagicMojito · 03/07/2015 20:20

Just wear what you want to OP.

If twatty little bastards want to take this piss out of passing folk they will regardless! If you weren't big then they'd just find something else to take the piss out of.
Why put your own comfort below their twattish behavior?

Bin the leggings woman!! Smile

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 03/07/2015 20:26

crazycat can you link those shorts? (or give more info?) They sound exactly what I need to prevent chaffage! Had a quick flick on h&m website but couldn't find anything that matched!

Notagainandagain1 · 03/07/2015 20:48

Does this actually happen or do you just think it might?

My friend who is size 24 regularly gets laughed at fir her size, pointed at called names so I can understand the OPs concerns
