To think this is NOT how you do a bbq?

Was at a bbq over the weekend where the hosts (good friends, very nice) cooked all the meat, kept stuff warm in the oven while cooking the rest then once it was all done, presented it all on the dining table like some kind of buffet.
That's not right is it?
They actually closed down the lid of the bbq and cleaned the floor around it as it had spat out grease marks, before the food was served Shock

AIBU to think bbqs should be an informal way of eating? Throw a bit of food on, have something to eat, throw on more in a bit, have something to eat, repeat until all food is gone over the course of the day rather than all done in half an hour?

Just reviving this thread to say that the in-laws 'outdoor grill-fest' this weekend was notable mainly for the absence of the ILs who were in the kitchen obsessively washing up throughout. All the food was laid out in the dining room. DCs were disappointed by lack of ketchup. When ILs finally joined us outside they and SIL lectured me on my incorrect pronunciation of quinoa. I have extensively googled and they were wrong and I am right. I've asked DH for permission to post about this on FB but he has declined my request hence venting here. They did a lot of stuff from 'Deliciously Ella' now known as 'Disgustingly Ella' in my house.

We had a BBQ this weekend, it was unusual in the fact that it wasn't actually a BBQ at all, despite being advertised as one. They just cooked the food in the hob in their kitchen and we ate outside.Confused

Food was good and we had a nice time and all, but.... THAT'S NOT A BBQ!

Sparkletastic · 06/07/2015 18:13

False advertising for sure

SerialBox · 06/07/2015 18:19

I cook everything in the oven then stick it on the BBQ for the last 10-15 mins. You'd hate me Grin

Hubby wants the all eat together pancakes.... i go for the rock up and get one when ready... much more informal.... pancake 1 would be cold when pancake 10 is cooked.

I like the sound of a barbecue where you get to stay inside the whole time.

Sitting outside, in the weather, with the insects and the hay fever, in all that stinky smoke which aims itself at me no matter how far away I try to sit, wishing I was inside out of the way and eating something that didn't look like charcoal but somehow still might be a bit raw on the inside is how I spent most of my time at barbecues.

I like buffets. I'd really appreciate being invited to a lovely summer indoor buffet. I might start hosting one every year to see if it catches on. Grin

Serial just why?! Confused

Sparkle thanks for reviving the thread, what odd behaviour. I have never heard of Ella nor am I keen to investigate further. The obsessive clearing up strikes again! And I call it keen-waah - is that right?

hygge you would have loved my friends bbq.

I've heard this is the Kiwi way?

Sparkletastic · 06/07/2015 18:44

Absolutely correct CakeNinja. They were all 'key noah' on my ass!

Sparkletastic · 06/07/2015 18:45

Suffice to say Deliciously Ella chocolate pots taste like baby food that has brushed up against some carob

My DH is South African so we don't bbq, we braai, huge chunks of meat and boerewors ( SA sausage) it's a big communal affair and as things are cooked they're eaten, as more is piled on, just a big meat fest and very very rarely a burger to be seen!

MrsKoala · 06/07/2015 19:28

We sort of do it like this. We eat as it's ready, but inside sitting at the nicely laid table. So lamb kebabs come in and are served with greek salad and tzatziki, we eat while the tandoori chicken is being done then that gets served with appropriate accompaniments, then steak etc. We never eat hanging about in the garden. We sit in the garden while it's cooking tho, then all come in to sit down.

00100001 · 06/07/2015 19:32

bananapants I'm with you! A proper BBQ has steak, steak and a bit mooooore steak!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/07/2015 21:19

You HAVE to eat outside in the garden when you BBQ,it's the law Wink

Wagglebee · 06/07/2015 21:33

I watched this earlier and now all BBQs are ruined for me because they'll never be as good as this. 16 hours of BBQing!

I've done that kind if thing once before, with lamb on the Weber.... It was goooooooood

Hazchem · 07/07/2015 07:39

This is pretty much every BBQ I've been to in Australia. Heck I've cooked a full roast in my BBQ and had everyone sit down.

Hazchem · 07/07/2015 07:42

Apart from the cleaning that is done later.

2gorgeousboys · 07/07/2015 07:46

Clicked on this worried that friends we had over for a bbq on Saturday were posting about us. Pheww thankfully it's not about DH's ridiculous attempts to light the bbq with last years charcoal which must have been a little damp from the shed. We finally got it lit hours later than expected and after I'd cooked the chicken kebabs indoors. We had a giggle and plenty of Pimms to see us through though.

CakeNinja · 07/07/2015 11:57

2gorgeous nope, not you!
The Pimms would have done me fine.
Hmm, maybe in a past life I was South African?! We don't do burgers or sausages on the bbq here, and it's definitely a help yourself type affair rather than serve yourself then sit down to the table.

I'm still craving proper BBQ food,

Should point out the Vimeo link I posted is 3 minutes long not 16 hours! Grin
