I am so fed up doing this but no idea how to get beautiful arms.

I'm, well, I'm fat, not just overweight, I have a high BMI and have always been ashamed of my wobbly arms. I also have a very mild skin condition on them, can't remember the name but it makes the skin resemble goosebumps. 2 years ago I was still wearing big cardigans and jumpers to hide my arms when I went outside. Last year I decided enough was enough. My arms aren't pretty but I'm damned if I'm going to bake every summer just to make sure my arms aren't showing. This year I'm 29 weeks pregnant and even going out in maxi dresses that show off my arms and bra straps too smile

It's called keratosis pilaris, my DD used to cover her arms because of this, I used to cover mine as I thought they were big but it's all about self perception. Hold your head up and go for it Ghostlife. Smile

SpamAnderson · 28/06/2015 16:49

jeanne I remember the Dr called it something but shortened it to KP. Apparently it's very common in people who also suffer migraines and hayfever :) I used to be super bothered by it until I noticed just how many people have it too :)
Oh I know fire I'm a rebel me ;) But a couple of years ago I wouldn't have dreamed of having my bra straps showing, especially if I was wearing a pink bra with a black dress :o

JeanneDeMontbaston · 28/06/2015 16:50

Oh ... that makes sense, I get migraines and hayfever too.

Agree with whoever says sun is good for it.

SpamAnderson · 28/06/2015 16:51

Thank you quiet I couldn't remember, I just remembered my mum saying I was her little peanut once the Dr said KP ha ha! I have a touch on my legs and DD1 has it very midly on her arms but hopefully seeing that I and lots of others don't hide it, she won't be bothered by it :)

MamaLazarou · 28/06/2015 16:51

Why should you have to hide your arms? What terrible thing would happen if people saw your arms? They're just arms. Ok, I have written arms too many times now and it looks weird. Arms arms arms.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 28/06/2015 16:52

My arms resemble thighs. And they're stretchmarked. I hate them and completely sympathise with the self consciousness. But please don't worry and don't cover them up anymore.

Wear what you like. People who are too delicate to tolerate your arms can look away.
Press ups are the best arm toners as you are bearing your own weight, so the heavier you are, the harder it is and the better your arms look.

LongDistanceLove · 28/06/2015 16:58

I'm overweight and have scars over my arms. I used to always wear cardigans and jackets in summer.

Then I realised that I don't judge other people's arms or legs, so I doubt other people are judging mine.

But if you want to tone up, baked bean cans, water bottles, bicep curls. There's bound to be a YouTube video.

Kumiho · 28/06/2015 17:14

The way to get thin arms is to lose weight - you can't choose where to lose weight from, it's an all-over thing. Little arm wiggles with a water bottle won't help. A DVD won't do that for you. Eating less will. Use MyFitnessPal to keep a log of everything you eat for a few days. You'll see how many calories you're consuming and which macronutrients you might be deficient in - not enough protein, for example, or not enough fat. Eat a little less than you burn and enjoy protein/fat to make you feel fuller longer.

For exercise and definition, strength train. Buy some proper dumbbells that adjust so you can add weight when the exercises get too easy. Use a weight comfortable in the 8-12 rep range, do three sets. When you can do more than 12 with ease, increase the weight. If you can't do 6-8, decrease the weight. Expect to use different weights for difference exercises. Which exercises? Compound ones, that work multiple groups of muscles.

I have cellulite on my upper arms and they are fat with bingo wings. I hate them but I don't cover them up when it's hot.

If people don't like them, then they don't need to look at them.

unlucky83 · 28/06/2015 17:24

I keep mine covered -actually it is the top of my arms and shoulders - always wear a white shirt over a vest top (and usually a thai style jacket -because I can't live without pockets!) I wear a shirt over a swimming costume unless I am actually swimming.
Mine aren't pretty, but not too bad ... my main concern is to protect them from the sun. I have freckles on my shoulders from getting really badly sunburned - blistered - when I was 11 (on a school trip - can't blame my parents). I figure I should protect them from more damage so keep them plastered in factor 50 or much easier - wear a shirt.

I also don't wear shorts - wear trousers. I had to wear a full length surgical stocking for years. At first I did carry on but couldn't stand the double takes and staring (tbf it did look like an artificial leg -but not quite -think why people stared - was it real or not? - also it was 'flesh coloured' except no-one has flesh that colour - so no matter what I did I had odd coloured legs, even if I wasn't wearing it cos then it wasn't as tanned as my 'normal' leg.) I haven't had to wear it for 8 years but still cover them - I have bad broken veins etc on the ankle of that leg ...but actually this year - not far off 50 - I might just think fuck it and start wearing shorts!

AdeleDazeem · 28/06/2015 17:25

My arms are awful. Sad
I used to weigh roughly double what I do now and so certain areas -arms included- feature very slack, loose skin. I can pinch some skin under my arm and twist it beyond 180 degrees. My arms often make a slapping or flapping noise when I put on a top.

Some days I think 'Fuck it, it's hot, I'm wearing a vest' other days I reach for a cover up or some sleeves.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 28/06/2015 17:27

I'm embarrassed by my arms, so I feel your pain! All the other bits of my body I'm not happy with can be disguised or covered up, but trying to keep upper arms covered in summer is a massive PITA. I buy tops with sleeves that come down to just above or just below the elbow (surprisingly hard to find!). M&S have some at the mo; the colours are a bit bright but they're perfect in shape (clinging) and arm length (just above elbow).

MegMurry · 28/06/2015 17:28

I have a friend who is really very fat.

Yesterday, it was hot & sunny here, she wore a tight vest top with spaghetti straps.

She doesn't feel it necessary to cover up her fat arms which break every 'rule' going. She hates her size; she often talks about how she would love to lose weight and be toned - but while she isn't, why should she cover up on a hot day?

Good for her, I say.

Whilst I'd love for her to lose weight (it's causing her problems), I'd hate to see her sweltering in something long sleeved to avoid the odd judgy look from people.

cosytoaster · 28/06/2015 17:30

More people have rubbish arms than great ones - just get them out!

NRomanoff · 28/06/2015 17:30

In the nicest possibly way, OP, no one else cares. I used to thing they did. But people are too busy with their own lives to care whether your as are beautiful or not.

I am not a huge fan of my arms, although I like them more now I lift weights. But I live in vest tops year round. Just go for it

TalkinPeace · 28/06/2015 17:33

(A) stop worrying about it
(B) do something about it : two tins of baked beans are your friends

  • one in each hand, hands by hips, arms out to the side, count for four to meet above your head, count for four down again - repeat ten times
  • stand with your back to the wall and do the same exercise, but keeping your knuckles on the wall
  • stand in the middle of the room, lift up in front for count of four to shoulder height, hold for four, down for four, repeat ten times
  • arms out to sides, shoulder height, teeny circles forwards, ten times, teeny circles back ten times

do all of that twice a day for a couple of weeks and your neck, shoulders, arms and torso will start to feel more toned - and the buildup of blood flow will help your skin to tone

once that lot gets easy, its time for press ups Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2015 17:41

My arms and legs are pretty psoriasisy at the moment and for the first time since I was a kid people looking at it bothers me. Still not going to cover up, its better for them if they have sun and besides when I see other people with psoriasis it gives me a secret club.

TalkinPeace · 28/06/2015 17:44

Ohyoubad
ABSOLUTELY : Vitamin D is the best treatment for psoriasis : swimming outdoors year round is a cracking method to get the skin healing up.

My psoriasis is in my hair so cannot be seen but has almost totally cleared up since I started swimming outdoors year rounfd

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 28/06/2015 17:44

I've been doing Fitness Blender tank top arms workouts on YouTube for a couple of months and quickly saw a difference. You use dumbbells or just body weight and it only takes about ten mins a day. I'm still fat and slowly losing weight but I already feel better about my arms and wore vest tops for the first time recently on holiday.

If you do want to cover up still, I have some loose fitting t shirts with wide sleeves stopping a bit above the elbow that are great for hot weather. Think I got some at asos.com and gap.co.uk.

And to agree with what others have said - nobody's paying that much attention to you except my mother who I would not wear a vest top in front of as they all have imperfections themselves. It does feel nice to have the sun on your shoulders.

ThingWithFeathers · 28/06/2015 17:46

Working with foam weights in an aqua class has really toned my arms . I have bingo wings , and probably always will now I am in my early sixties, but my biceps are nicely toned and I feel much happier wearing short sleeved tops. Fat Face and White Stuff are good for tops with sleeves that finish just above or just below the elbow.

Coincidenceschmoincidence · 28/06/2015 17:46

All of you with bumpy arms - get some soap and glory body scrub and use it in the shower once a week. Combined with the St tropez shower gel, mine are golden Brown, utterly smooth and bump free - they definitely weren't before.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 28/06/2015 17:50

Nothing wrong with a bingo wing. But very wrong to have thick bra straps showing with a maxi dress.....

SkaterGrrrrl · 28/06/2015 17:50

You do not have to hide your body because it doesn't conform to some unattainable standard of beauty.

Life us short. Its summer.

Wear short sleeves. Its not the appearance of your body that matters, but the kindness of your heart.
