Just saw this story on ITV twitter.com/itvnews/status/614128648585617408

Most of the comments are about her weight. Don't people understand the cheaper food is more unhealthy and you can very quickly get into poverty! Really annoyed by the response.

And i had a gym trainer tell me on no account to excersise without a sports bra as i would damage the breast tissue.

Excersise may be free. Sports bras arent. And our department store STILL doesnt stock them in my size.

i have to get mine from Bravissimo.

sits and waits for someone to tell me Poundworld do them which i have already tried and it gave me as much support as a T shirt would

SillyStuffBiting · 26/06/2015 16:30

This is getting silly now Hmm

elderflowerlemonade · 26/06/2015 16:30

Oh, come on!

HelenaDove · 26/06/2015 16:30

Ooh thanks for that Morris Will take a look.

HelenaDove · 26/06/2015 16:32

Superexcited i was TOLD by a trainer not to even power walk without one as i am so well endowed.

I lost ten stone so i rather think ive achieved a lot.

formerbabe · 26/06/2015 16:33

I really don't think we can blame obesity on the price of sports bras!!Grin

Fwiw, I am not poor, I have an expensive gym membership... You will still find me most evenings on the sofa with a glass of wine!

HelenaDove · 26/06/2015 16:33

SOMEONE ON JSA ISNT GOING TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD A SPORTS BRA THEY JUST ARENT.

HelenaDove · 26/06/2015 16:35

No former babe But the price of things is yet another hoop that poor people are expected to jump through.

WorraLiberty · 26/06/2015 16:36

With regards to local shops not selling decent produce. Most people (other than very rural) will have access to supermarkets/online deliveries.

Most convenience stores are quite expensive anyway.

elderflowerlemonade · 26/06/2015 16:37

I don't even wear a BRA to the gym; they haven't fallen off yet Hmm

Sorry Helena; I admire your weight loss but that remark, suggesting that the nation of couch potatoes is because of sports bra costs, is not one that lends itself to common sense!

TheHouseOnBellSt · 26/06/2015 16:38

Worra funnily enough, our local CoOp has just implemented a thing where their fresh produce is very cheap....salad items for under 50p...

Superexcited · 26/06/2015 16:39

helena losing 10 stone is a massive achievement and you should feel very proud of yourself.
Most people when out walking dint power walk though they just walk at a leisurely pace. It only takes a little while longer to cover the same distance and the calories burned walking at a leisurely pace still count.
Your breasts are obviously bigger than average too. Most people don't need a special bra to walk a couple of miles.
I have little norks usually (currently pregnant and they are quite massive) but I wouldn't run without a sports bra and I wouldn't bother with a poundland bra as I think the fact it costs a pound speaks for itself. I would happily walk a few miles with my normal bra on though.

WorraLiberty · 26/06/2015 16:40

That's good TheHouse

HelenaDove · 26/06/2015 16:43

Oh i walk everywhere. I couldnt even tell you what our local bus fare is because ive not used it for years.

elderflower i was told that it would damage the breast tissue if i didnt wear one while excersising or while at the gym

To start with i did wear a normal bra and the trainer told me off EVERY session and kept asking me when i was going to buy a proper sports bra.

elderflowerlemonade · 26/06/2015 16:47

Yes but that's you. Most people are able to walk and move and exercise without damaging their breasts. I haven't worn a bra for years and they haven't fallen off! Wink

Obviously I accept my boobs are just small enough to get away with this but most people don't have massive breasts!

TheHouseOnBellSt · 26/06/2015 16:48

Worra yes the manager told me it was trialed in Wales somewhere and sales shot through the roof (in a low income area) and so since this is also a low income area, they've added it here too...I certainly take advantage of it! Many of the parents here are lone...no car etc...don't want to spend as much as the supermarket delivery costs charge....so they go local and an't afford a lot.

WorraLiberty · 26/06/2015 16:50

elder, to be fair many overweight women have huge breasts.

It looks like Helena has a point according to this study

That's good TheHouse but to be honest, I find the Co-Op so expensive for other items, I would probably still end up spending far more on a couple of day's shopping there, than I would at Tesco for example.

GnomeDePlume · 26/06/2015 16:51

Frozen veg is great if you have a freezer but damn all use if you havent.

It is back to the complexity of poverty. Many of the problems may be resolveable but each is a battle of resisting temptation and challenging social and personal status quos.

Yes you can struggle across town and back again to get to a shop which sells fruit and veg you can afford, yes you can exercise, yes you can resist the temptation of easy expensive credit, yes you can make healthy meals from scratch, yes you can resist the pleading from your children to have the same tasty processed food as their friends.

Of course it is possible but as someone posted up thread, you are always going to be struggling, always falling short. Some people do manage this. But others are ordinary fallible humans who find it too hard.

elderflowerlemonade · 26/06/2015 16:51

True, but I am not buying the 'sports bras are expensive therefore it is the fault of the institution that people are fat' argument! Grin

noeffingidea · 26/06/2015 16:52

My sports bra cost about £5 from Sainsburys.Probably wouldn't do someone with massive boobs but it's not bad. I'm sure there are other places that sell them cheaply as well.
People that are motivated to lose weight and become fit will make sacrifices and find ways to do it. If they're not motivated then they will find reasons why they can't. It's the same as anything else really.

ExConstance · 26/06/2015 16:53

9pages on this topic and no mention of "a girl called Jack"? She proved it could be done.

Superexcited · 26/06/2015 16:55

If they're not motivated then they will find reasons why they can't. It's the same as anything else really.

Yes, to this ^^

Superexcited · 26/06/2015 16:56

A girl called jack didn't really eat proper portions though.

WorraLiberty · 26/06/2015 16:58

GnomeDePlume are you suggesting that the people (of which there are many) who do manage those things, are somehow infallible human beings?

See that's the sort of attitude/outlook that prevents some people from getting it all together.

If they think healthy eating/exercise/weight loss is only for the infallible, why would they bother trying?

BigChocFrenzy · 26/06/2015 17:02

It is possible to get / stay a healthy weight when you are poor, but we should acknowledge it is MUCH more difficult.

. longterm poverty is very stressful, can drain energy and will-power; everything is a struggle.
. shortterm poverty, like being a student or young grad, when you know you'll have a good career later, is totally different
. The emotional stress often causes comfort eating, as self medication NIH study
. most of us could manage a few months of healthy eating, with our cupboards full of spices & saucepans, our heads full of recipes & confidence. But eventually we might fall into the routine of whatever is quick and easy, that everyone will eat.

I grew up very poor, so I know I'm privileged now.
Someone poor, with a family to look after, a tiring job and commute - no, their life is totally different.
I do NOT judge other people for their weight or lifestyle.
