This isn't OK is it? Forever Living on FB.

I have a couple of FB friends deeply into Forever Living at the moment. I'd hide them but there's some weird fascination in watching it play out.

Anyway one of them has linked something today where a FL person is telling a story about a relative of theirs with cancer who wasn't tolerating chemo and is now doing much better after drinking Aloe Vera gel. It's not making any claims that it treats cancer (it says he now could be strong enough to restart treatment) and it's only anecdotal but it just doesn't sit right with me. I have no experience of the products at all btw.

AIBU to feel a bit uncomfortable about that?

I am Shock that someone would put 'supplements' into their baby's bottle. Unless their Dr had prescribed it, of course.

TattyDevine · 26/06/2015 10:09

Ah geez, I hate it when they make their kids have it. One of my FL "friends" was moaning that her son had a cold and that she would be "making sure he takes his aloe from now on". Poor kid, I bet it tastes like shit, and if it does in fact cure the common cold then surely they'd be up for a nobel peace prize by now?

Another thing that shits me about this bullshit scheme is the other day there was some seminar bollix at some place in London where they all descended in droves and the FL nuts were posting on Facebook about how inspiring it was being in this room with 2000 "business owners".

You are not a "business owner" if you do FL or whatever. You cannot sell the business on (can you? I'm pretty sure you can't). Fair play to people who build a business from scratch and sell it on - that is an achievement. And in fairness if you do FL and build a "business" from it with a downline that is earning you money etc that is also an achievement - but if you can't sell it on, well that's just shit isn't it?

Please correct me if I'm wrong about being able to "sell" your business, I am happy to be corrected. But if you can't, then you don't "own" anything.

CMOTDibbler · 26/06/2015 10:21

Report it to Trading Standards. We were told in a training this week that as a company we could be prosecuted for any member of the company even just liking a status on FB that made an unsubstantiated claim. And the FDA had done this to a diet supplement company.

Whathaveilost · 26/06/2015 11:06

One of my FB friends has started selling Younique.
I believe the products are supposed to be ok but Man Alive! she has turned into a weirdo

Every post is cult like and goes on about how happy she is and how she loves her life and her Diva Sisters etc.

I am mesmerised. I quite look forward to her daily updates.
I have one of them as well!

If I miss her post I have to actively find what she has posted so I can be stunned!

MissBattleaxe · 26/06/2015 11:46

Motherinlawsdung- I agree.

This is irresponsible and whilst it is only anecdotal, it is clearly suggestive of a relationship between FL products and improving a cancer victim's plight.

It also preys on those who are at their lowest ebb and vulnerable or distressed and therefore I think its immoral.

shadowfax07 · 26/06/2015 12:19

My oncologist told me specifically not to take any vitamins or supplements (including aloe vera) during chemotherapy. Some of the chemotherapy drugs contain large amounts of heavy metals, and taking supplements can add to the toxicity of the chemotherapy, which is not a good idea!

I'd rather listen to an oncologist, rather than a FL seller, quite frankly, and I do take supplements normally.

MissBattleaxe · 26/06/2015 12:51

shadowfax- Your oncologist knows what he is talking about. A FLBot trying to make money on the other hand...well they should be shamed.

MrsRabbitsTwin · 26/06/2015 13:13

What Smudge said about it being "make spurious claims about cancer week". One of my FB pals has posted today that veganism can cure colon cancer.

Maybe tofu will be the next aloe vera.

DoughDoe · 26/06/2015 13:26

It is a cult isn't it, just looked at the 'friends' of Juice Plus Baby eczema lady, and they are

"Presidential Marketing Director at Juice Plus+"

"Qualifying National Marketing Director at Juice Plus +"

"Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at THE 365 Lifestyle" (she has 'fat person' selfies taken at that angle that's supposed to disguise the fact she's obese)

"Executive Marketing Director at Juice Plus+"

Not to mention that she herself has endless 'before and after' photos (apparently yo-yo dieting is healthy?) which look exactly the same anyway

windchime · 26/06/2015 13:38

It amazes me that people are still buying that crap.

DowntownFunk · 26/06/2015 13:50

In my first flat my flatmate and I had an aloe vera plant. We'd break a bit off and rub the fleshy bit on our spots to get rid of them. We thought it worked but maybe the spots were on their way out anyway.

I used to sometimes take aloe vera tablets from Holland and Barrett to make me poo if I was bunged up. They worked a treat. I tried the drink once and it was foul.

I wouldn't buy anything from a pyramid scheme. I have FB friends doing Younique, FL, Juice Plus and now a scratch card one that I don't yet know the name of.

A vegetarian diet can help PREVENT bowel ca but I don't believe there's evidence its CURES bowel ca

giraffesCantPluckTheirEyebrows · 27/06/2015 13:26

juice plus cures, yes CURES MS!

apparently

wickedwitchofwaterloo · 29/06/2015 13:56

Today, my JuicePlus friend has posted she got news that she had been "promoted" while she was partying at Glastonbury Hmm

ElementaryMyDear · 29/06/2015 15:47

One of my FB friends has got into JuicePlus. Previously she posted the occasional sensible comment related to her profession plus some fairly icky so-called "inspirational" posts, but now 90% of her posts are JP bollox. When she posted something about how it was second only to fresh fruit, I sent an "innocent" inquiry about why it wouldn't be better to stick with the fresh fruit, I strangely got no reply.

She has been organising an annual conference for something related to her profession every year, and I believe she gets the use of a commercial company's premises at a preferential rate because there is an element of it that is sort of charity related and they no doubt feel it's good for their image. This year, however, she drafted in some JP bot to speak at the conference and also allowed them to have a stall selling their crap where they could be heard enthusiastically claiming that it would cure virtually all known ills. Representatives of the commercial company were there and were looking increasingly bootfaced at the fact that she was using their goodwill to allow her mates to promote their dodgy products, and I doubt that she'll be allowed there again. Equally, many if not most of the delegates weren't too happy that they'd paid up to attend a conference which was partly being used to sell things to them rather than to give them the information and help they wanted. People who use her professionally also aren't happy that she seems to be subscribing to snake oil. I really fear that, not only will she discover that JP isn't the road to fortune that she believes it is, but it could destroy her reputation within her profession.

CrystalHaze · 29/06/2015 16:00

I'd love to see a Panorama/Dispatches type of programme on these companies, how they sucker people in, and how the profits actually break down across the participants, as well as how they turn a blind eye to (perhaps even encourage?) the spurious curative qualities.

DildoFail · 29/06/2015 16:03

My FLbot recently posted a pic on FB of her - complete with Sadface - sitting on the sofa with her "poor, poorly" DS. The upside of course is that she gets to stay at home to take care of him because of the fab nature of her "job".

So even a sick child is an opportunity to plug FL.

moooolah · 29/06/2015 16:07

Someone on fb has gotten completely stuck into FL. and various other shit over the years

Not long ago she would post about how little money they had that they couldn't treat their children etc etc..all of a sudden her life has been transformed by FL and this Aloe shite and she's getting new cars, sofas etc and constantly lunching out with lots of the cliché. . "Working from the park today with my kids. . Best job ever"
! Crap (so good a job she's still kept her day job though??) And I genuinely worry that the person 'above' her is feeding her lots of inspirational toss and convincing her that a fake it till you make it attitude to lifestyle is what she needs to do .. honestly I'm quietly concerned she's just getting in debt on the promise of FL being a big money maker.

My feed is flooded with her spouting about the benefits of aloe and weird cleansing diets and how amazing she looks and feels. Hmm

But this OP has annoyed me! They're not saying it cures cancer. They're just hoping the watcher will be stupid enough to assume so. Yanbu OP. Bad taste.

moooolah · 29/06/2015 16:14

Oops. Epic post. I've been holding that in a while!

IHeartKingThistle · 29/06/2015 17:27

Grin mooooolah

Today apparently she has cured her toddler's tonsillitis (though of course this isn't explicitly stated) by applying aloe jelly directly to his tonsils. Is that even possible?

OP posts:
CrystalHaze · 29/06/2015 17:30

How the fuck are these spurious medical claims allowed to stand?! is there no 'code of conduct' tat forbids this type of thing, or are the fat bastards at the top happy to turn a blind eye to anything the minions say as long as the cash keeps rolling in? Angry

moooolah · 29/06/2015 21:00

She applied it directly to the tonsils? sure she did. Bet they glow gold now too. and her toddler hates her for trying

MissBattleaxe · 29/06/2015 21:25

Op- I wouldn't be able to resist asking for her medical credentials. I would never do that unless my doctor specifically told me to ( and its highly doubtful any doctor would). What if her child had an allergic reaction or their throat swelled? Stupid, stupid.

Letitsnow9 · 29/06/2015 22:50

Mrsdevere ut might make you happy to know that man is finally in prison! Yes diet cured his sons cancer, that or the huge amount of NHS treatment and antibiody therapy!
