To want my food on a plate?

TheBossness · 24/06/2015 13:53

Just had an all day cooked breakfast in a greasy spoon type place to have it served on what looked like a roof tile with my cup of tea in a frigging jam jar with a handle. The grease from the fry up mixed with the egg yolks ran straight off the tile and onto the table cloth.

I then posted about it on facebook and a friend pointed me to Twitter @WeWantPlates. Apparently this is a thing and plates have become obsolete.

AIBU to want a plate and a mug?

I am serious about food. There is no place for quirky. Anything other than a plate is nonsensical.

I would masquerade as a roofer and plate their roof.

We want plates makes me laugh like a drain. But it's one advantage of living in the sticks that I don't have to put up with this kind of nonsense yet.

Got a picture?

motherofmonster · 24/06/2015 13:58

no you are nbu.
I frikken hate this.
Some of the photos on twitter are shocking. Although there is a cafe in japan/china i think which serves its food out of little toilet bowls. - Because that would make anyone's thai curry look appealing

FenellaFellorick · 24/06/2015 13:59

Not at all.

A few weeks ago I went out for lunch.

My 'plate' was a scuffed wooden board and a small rusty frying pan.

I apologise for the world shortage of WTFs. I used them all. More are in production and will be ready to ship out in 6 - 8 weeks.

cuntycowfacemonkey · 24/06/2015 13:59

Tea in a clear glass jar? No thanks! I would have to send that back and get a proper mug or cup. Hot drinks in see through vessels is all wrong IMO. At least it wasn't served on a bit of drift wood I suppose

QueenBean · 24/06/2015 14:00

Ha ha, completely agree with you!

I once ordered a chicken Caesar salad. Except it came "deconstructed" and was: half a lettuce (not pulled apart), a chicken leg, a lump of cheese, a sorry looking pile of anchovies and a cup of sauce. On a bread board.

The waiter set it down and I could have laughed. Or cried. I asked for a plate and a knife. And didn't go back again.

Collaborate · 24/06/2015 14:02

Borrowed unashamedly from twitter (@MooseAllain):

"We ordered some food earlier, I'd like to order two pints of lager too"
"Do you want me to put them on your slate?"
"No, in glasses please"

NKfell · 24/06/2015 14:03

A restaurant close to me serves doughball type things on what looks like a cricket bat!

The amusement of waiters tottering towards you trying to balance is funny though.

In the restaurant I work in we don't do anything weird like that (yet).

NKfell · 24/06/2015 14:04

That middle sentence was bad- apologies but, you get the idea!

MrsTedCrilly · 24/06/2015 14:04

Ugh, modern gone too far Grin Plates are perfect as they are lipped, if they are going to try something different it needs lipping!

MrsTedCrilly · 24/06/2015 14:05

Forgot to add, saw a pic on facebook of a cocktail being served in a lightbulb... Hmm

pinkyredrose · 24/06/2015 14:06

I apologise for the world shortage of WTFs. I used them all Grin

I am so stealing this!

TheBossness · 24/06/2015 14:09

No pictures. I think I was in too much shock to fish our my phone. DP said my face went from Shock to Confused when the food was brought out.

I had a look on that Twitter page and seen someone got a fry up served on a garden shovel Confused

It always makes me wonder how they get these things properly clean.

Idontseeanydragons · 24/06/2015 14:10

My uncle once posted from a restaurant (he never does this usually) with a picture of his steak and chips served on what looked very much like a dirty piece of railway sleeper. Which indeed it was.
He was 200 miles away at the time and I could practically feel his outrage GrinGrin

ppeatfruit · 24/06/2015 14:11

NYADNBU FGS why? why? it's so damn stupid, they should employ decent chefs not idiots who buy slates and test tubes to serve the food in.

UnspecialSnowflake · 24/06/2015 14:12

This awful trend for putting food on things other than plates must be coming to an end soon, as even Beefeater, surely the least hip and fashionable restaurant chain around, are now doing it.

Last weekend in there I had a burger on a breadboard, served with chips in a (mini) tin bucket and coleslaw in a jam jar. My local Beefeater is generally the eating hangout of the over sixties crowd so god only knows what they make of all this. I can just imagine my late grandmother's look of horror if she was served with food in a tin bucket.

AnnPerkins · 24/06/2015 14:13

YANBU I would never expect a greasy spoon-type place to adopt this silly trend, you can usually rely on them to serve their tea in a sensible, big mug. A jam jar?! Hmm Angry

We always ask in restaurants now for our meals to be served on plates - just in case they had something else daft in mind. I mean who actually DOES like their food served on a screechy slate or a soggy wooden board? I daren't order the soup!

And I feel so sorry for the waiting staff, trying to get food to the customer before it rolls onto the floor, and then having to clear tables one board or tile at a time because nothing stacks Hmm.

TheBossness · 24/06/2015 14:13

Wouldn't the lightbulb keel over a break?

My son, then about 4, was once served a child's portion of sausages, mash and gravy (in a separate jug, natch) on a completely flat plate. Even the serving staff could see it wouldn't end well and offered to take it back and return with something more sensible!

WorktoLive · 24/06/2015 14:15

YY Womble that's exactly what I came on here to say, and I am an extremely grotty slattern by Mumsnet standards.

Can anyone who works in such an establishment explain how they get tatty old breadboards and roofing slates clean enough to satisfy the environmental health/food hygiene inspector?

Last time I ate out, my meal came on a breadboard. It was only a sandwich and chips so I didn't have the same problem as my friend, who was trying to eat a meal involving gravy off a breadboard, without it all running off the sides Sad.

TheBossness · 24/06/2015 14:16

The tea came in something like that. The second one is a wine glass Confused

I hate this too. makes things impossible to eat as you have no space to cut things up and the tables cluttered where you have to remove all the bowls buckets and crap off the board to attempt to eat it. and u can't salt and vinegar chips properly when they are vertical in a bucket.

coffeeisnectar · 24/06/2015 14:22

Dd 2 says it's not dinner unless it's on a plate. She's 9. Wise beyond her years :o

I could imagine her horror if her food was served on a slate. She would be lost for words.

rubybleu · 24/06/2015 14:22

I was recently served a burger on a garden shovel. Not a word of lie.
