To hate this new trend for people using the word "think" unnecessarily

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 20:10

I've only noticed this over the last couple of months. This kind of thing:

"I work in an office - think blue chip multinational"

What's wrong with saying "I work in an office for a blue chip multinational"

Or:

"You may be entitled to a parking space if you are a healthcare professional - think Doctor, nurse or midwife".

What's wrong with "You may be entitled to a parking space if you are a healthcare professional such as a doctor, nurse or midwife."?

Does anyone else hate it? Am I alone here? Think - nobody agrees with me.

Thank god I've not come across this.

PattiODoors · 19/06/2015 20:12

That's it Hesterton.

I got mildly annoyed the other day in my car - think very minor road rage incident.

FarFromAnyRoad · 19/06/2015 20:15

So yes, I kind of know what you're saying but I find it hard to care - think disinterested - because it doesn't really affect my life. But if it annoys you you can't help that I suppose. C'est vraiment tres annoyante!

SpudCunt · 19/06/2015 20:17

YANBU.

"We went for dinner, think Italian...."

You went to a fucking Italian restaurant. I don't require your 'help' or 'encouragement' to conjure the bloody scene, it's not complicated.

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 20:17

Agree farfromanyroad.

I've been irritated a few times in my life before - think mild annoyance, so it's not unfamiliar to me.

OP posts:
squoosh · 19/06/2015 20:17

No that doesn't annoy me.

What does annoy me though is people using the verb 'to love' in the present continuous tense. 'I'm loving the new Daniel O'Donnell album' for example. What's wrong with 'I love the new Daniel O'Donnell album'?

Irksome.

MoominMama22 · 19/06/2015 20:17

It's "In terms of" that's really getting my goat at the mo. Watch any news programme or anything with interviews and just count how many times people say it. It's getting ridiculous!

goodnessgraciousgouda · 19/06/2015 20:18

I've never come across this but it does seem realllllly irritating.

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 20:18

SpudCunt I am LOVING your work (and your name, awesome thread).

I am fond of a few posters on here - think girlcrush.

OP posts:
ReluctantCamper · 19/06/2015 20:19

Yes, it drives me nuts. Sounds really pompous to me when I read it in any post. It's in the same drawer as saying 'IMHO'. Of course it's your bleeding opinion, that's given. You wouldn't be stating someone else's opinion without explanation, would you?

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 20:19

Haha squooush, sorry Grin - think apologetic.

OP posts:
tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 20:20

Yep reluctantcamper I always feel like they're talking down to me - think being patronising.

Ha! Grin And you capitalised it too tidal!

OverAndAbove · 19/06/2015 20:23

Oh god, I'm having a new wave of rage against certain turns of phrase.

The one that's really getting on my wick is "for me". People use it unnecessarily, to show, I think, that they appreciate other people feel differently. It just weakens everything and makes it too personal. Gah!

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 20:24

Les Dawson underboob nudge!

I'm laughing away here sitting on my sofa - think DFS brown leather special.

OP posts:
OverAndAbove · 19/06/2015 20:26

Crossed posts as IMHO is the online equivalent of "for me"!

DoTheDuckFace · 19/06/2015 20:27

Oh yes it bugs me too. I can think what I want, I don't need instructions!

Worse for me though, is when someone puts no, or non, on the end of a sentence.

It's so annoying, no?

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 19/06/2015 20:28

I can't stand 'my bad'

What happened to 'I am sorry I made a mistake'

SpudCunt · 19/06/2015 20:29

What does annoy me though is people using the verb 'to love' in the present continuous tense.

SpudCunt I am LOVING your work

I feel like I've somehow helped something beautiful and evil happen, but I'm not sure how- Think not Gru, but confused minion.

littlehouseinthebigwoods · 19/06/2015 20:29

Yanbu! It's almost as bad as starting every single sentence with 'so..'
This happens so often now I can't even remember what the alternative is..

ChwatFeechers · 19/06/2015 20:29

tidal's 'think' in every reply is the best thing in this thread Grin

iwouldgoouttonight · 19/06/2015 20:32

I've only ever heard the think thing on MN, not heard it in real life, think normal people.

It's bloody annoying though.
