To hate this new trend for people using the word "think" unnecessarily

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 20:10

I've only noticed this over the last couple of months. This kind of thing:

"I work in an office - think blue chip multinational"

What's wrong with saying "I work in an office for a blue chip multinational"

Or:

"You may be entitled to a parking space if you are a healthcare professional - think Doctor, nurse or midwife".

What's wrong with "You may be entitled to a parking space if you are a healthcare professional such as a doctor, nurse or midwife."?

Does anyone else hate it? Am I alone here? Think - nobody agrees with me.

"I feel like I've somehow helped something beautiful and evil happen, but I'm not sure how- Think not Gru, but confused minion."

Grin - think grin.

This thread is going quite well for me.

I normally get savaged on AIBU - think bloodbath.

OP posts:
SpudCunt · 19/06/2015 20:39

The trick is to not linger long enough to witness your savaging. I usually just dump a post and sprint away. Think dirty protest in a crowded area.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/06/2015 20:57

This thread has made me roar! Think tea spurting out of my nose...

TulipsAndSwifts · 19/06/2015 21:09

I remember an 80's hairdresser saying this "Choppy haircut, think Anthea Turner!"
I boycotted his bloody thinky shampoo to punish him.

SpudCunt · 19/06/2015 21:13

"think Anthea Turner!"

"Jesus, do I have to?!"

Yamahaha · 19/06/2015 21:19

I think it can be very amusing- think this thread.

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 21:21

I was hoping wondering if anyone would come along to offend such usage.

Then we could all have an interesting debate about it - think bunfight.

OP posts:
tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 21:22

Offend? Defend!

Made a bit of a slip there - think typo.

squeaver · 19/06/2015 21:28

On a scale of 1 to 10 I find this mildly annoying - think 4.

On the same scale, however, I find absolutely bloody infuriating - think 14 - the use of the word "hacks" to denote what Woman's Own used to call "tips".

Lweji · 19/06/2015 21:29

IMVVVVVHO, the use of think in this
"Does anyone else hate it? Am I alone here? Think - nobody agrees with me."
Is not the absolute meilleur.

You are not supposed to use think to follow a question, only a statement. FGS.

You did better on the other cases. Well done. You should get a reward - think Cake or Wine, even a Biscuit

DJThreeDog · 19/06/2015 21:30

The one that gets me riled is adding 'ing' unnecessarily to certain words - think 'addicting' and 'trending'.

Although 'trending' might be a word.

squeaver · 19/06/2015 21:31

It'll pass though, remember when every bloody thing was "the new black".

I remember a feature on shoes actually declaring "black is the new black".....

DJThreeDog · 19/06/2015 21:33

Sacre bleu!

I meant - "although 'trending' might be a word" n'est pas?

P.S. - loving this thread.
P.P.S. - also hate P.S.

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 21:34

Took me a while to get into my stride didn't it Lweji? I'm now a fully-paid up member of the inappropriate-use-of-of-the-word-think club - think wanker.

OP posts:
SpudCunt · 19/06/2015 21:34

Oh fuck me upside down but 'addicting' makes me want to peel the offender's face off with a soup spoon.

tidalwaveover · 19/06/2015 21:35

Squeaver Shock is that what they mean when they refer to 'life hacks'? Shock I had no idea what they were going on about - think confused.

OP posts:
Yarp · 19/06/2015 21:35

It reminds me of people - think teenagers with a rising inflection- who use 'like' to replace verbs

eg

'And I was like what the hell are you playing at?' where like means 'I said' or 'I thought' what the hell are you playing at

OR

'And it was like really horrible' to mean 'It was really horrible' or 'it seemed really horrible'

SpudCunt · 19/06/2015 21:40

Miriam Margolyes on The Graham Norton Show once amused me with her tirade of "It's not 'LIKE!' it 'IS!'

I don't mind life hacks- just adopting computer/gadget hacks ("I hacked my XBox and now I can play ALL THE GAMES") to life ("I hacked my cupboard under the stairs and now I can store ALL THE THINGS!").

Bu then I should probably not be on this thread due to my avant garde* approach to punctuation.

*Think- Shit.

squeaver · 19/06/2015 21:44

Yes! And they're always so obvious. "These fashion hacks will change your life!" And it's things like: wear a scarf. Or buy 60 denier tights.

Yarp · 19/06/2015 21:45

squeaver

You are so rocking those tights!

(I have read too much Grazia magazine)

ItsTricky · 19/06/2015 21:46

I love a good old grammar thread. Think pig in shit.

squeaver · 19/06/2015 21:46

Or, Spud, it's not "like", it's "said".

"And I was, like, piss off"

"And she was, like, no you piss off"

"And he was, like, why don't you both piss off"

squeaver · 19/06/2015 21:49

In fact, I am loving myself in these tights.

Which is another one. Just say ME, you don't sound any more learned by saying MYSELF.

BathtimeFunkster · 19/06/2015 21:49

This thread has only served to convince me that all sentences should have a "picture this" final clause, think "backfired".
