I consider myself pretty clean and tidy but MIL has unearthed some areas that are obviously my blind spot this week:

  • freezer drawer in fridge (all frozen up)
  • washing machine drawer (not black but a couple of mouldy bits)
  • mop bucket (again not filthy but some ingrained dirt was in there)
  • bottom of cleaning cupboard floor
  • cobwebs in kitchen corners

Do you have any areas in which it never occurs to you to clean? I want to go check if I have more!

That waste water pipe at the back of the loo which seems to attract all the dust from the entire bathroom onto it.

Door handles and surrounding woodwork where grubby little hands have been

Howmanywotwots · 19/06/2015 13:28

The whole bloody thing!

spillyobeans · 19/06/2015 13:32

I cant think about what i dont clean - im sure there are areas i miss or gets done rarely but cant think!

However when staying with pil for a little while i offered to do cleaning and cleaned bathroom and the base of toilet and sink was gross :s think that got missed! And the bottoms of doors were really grubby (something i guess you don't realise if you live with it everyday)

NuzzleandScratch · 19/06/2015 13:35

Ok, silly question, but what do you use to clean things like door handles, light switches etc? (no, I've never cleaned these!)

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 19/06/2015 13:36

Might be quicker to tell you the parts I do clean Blush
I'm short and recently realised the top of the fridge, which just about everyone else can see is filthy! Why didn't they give it a wipe?! dh and gangly ds

morelikeguidelines · 19/06/2015 13:39

Tempted to say all of it, as that is how it feels one day after cleaning :-D

In reality - behind anything including sofas is rarely cleaned, inside/behind the blinds almost never. We are not good at dusting high parts of room or cleaning tops of cupboards / high shelves as dh and I both short (my excuse!).

mileend2bermondsey · 19/06/2015 13:44

inside/behind the blinds almost never
I will never, ever again have venetian blinds for this very reason. fucking annoying pieces of shit

imwithspud · 19/06/2015 13:44

Skirting boards definitely get neglected, as do the windows. Moved in to our current abode in January and I've never cleaned either of them Blush

Never done under the fridge/behind the washing machine. Both are ridiculously heavy to move and we have lino flooring in the kitchen which tears easily so fuck that.

The mantelpiece is looking increasingly cluttered nowadays.

ToysRLuv · 19/06/2015 13:45

My philosophy is largely "what you don't see doesn't bother you".

TheOddity · 19/06/2015 15:13

The thing is, some stuff, I kind of do see, but it just doesn't really occur to me that it could ever be clean Blush like that mop bucket bottom!

I found another couple in my house now my brain is tuned into it. Bottom of the chair legs gathering bits of hair and dust (Gross. Still just ignoring). And yes, top of the fridge is horrible. But then I really can't be arsed to move every single thing I store up there and it's rented so I have a feeling I would be dealing with generational grime.

I would really like ohtheholidays to come to my house and do it for me show me how it's done re. the fridge.

I have found my people! Grin

Top of fridge/cupboards
Skirting boards
Windows
Behind radiators
Oven
Front door
Light fittings
Door frames

House is tidy and we never get ill so it's all good..

MrsTedCrilly · 19/06/2015 15:48

Oh yeah agree with waste water pipe coming out of toilet! So dusty but out of sight Wink

Sobek · 19/06/2015 15:48

Cobwebs on the ceiling....I don't look up that often!

Cupboard under the sink never gets cleaned.

Actually, I'm blind to most of the dirt and grime in my house, but I'm excellent at spotting it in other people's!

JaceLancs · 19/06/2015 15:53

Tops of doors
High shelves
Under bed
Behind kitchen appliances
Skirting boards
Not never, but pretty infrequently!

iloveport · 19/06/2015 15:54

behind and top of fridge, underneath the beds (can't reach it), tops of kitchen cupboards. Everywhere else is sparkly!

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2015 15:54

Noraand scratch I use the microfibre cloths, a little damp to clean everything Grin they're good for computers and anything else really, amazing for fridges with a little spray of kitchen cleaner on it. Best of all the items don't need rinsing afterwards

I keep a lot of them and boil wash them with the occasional white cotton wash .

Felyne · 19/06/2015 15:59

Anywhere I don't see. I bloody hate housework and although I love things to be clean it pisses me off when they get dusty and grubby within hours. I've dealt with it by lowering my standards.

unlucky83 · 19/06/2015 16:02

I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle - I can make it look tidish but....honestly we just have too much clutter - occasionally I'll start a declutter / deep clean drive.
I'm supposed to clean upstairs on Mon and downstairs on a Tues (tidy, dust surfaces and hoover). The idea is I do the minimum but should have time (if I feel keen) to spend an extra 15-20min doing something I wouldn't normally do - like declutter an area/ tidy drawers/a kitchen cupboard etc

...as it is for the past 6 weeks I've not felt keen, done the bare minimum and the cleaning days have been slipping anyway (eg I did the floors downstairs yesterday)
My biggest blind spot though is ceilings/light fittings...especially the kitchen lights - we have three small spots and every so often I'll glance up see an opportunist spider made a web between them must have been several months weeks ago and it is by then usually slighty greasy with bits of dead fly remains Blush

Petradreaming · 19/06/2015 16:06

I recently discovered that the underside of the dishwasher door, the bit you can't see when you pull the door down, gets filthy. So now I lie on the floor and bleach it.

ppeatfruit · 19/06/2015 16:07

That post made me sound like I do a lot of cleaning. I'm afraid it gets done when there are visitors coming or I actually notice that the windows are filthy when the sun shines on them Grin. I've got a gaps between the kitchen cupboards and they floors are dirty, really dirty Blush.

My excuse is that we live in an old stone built house with a woodburner, the dust level has to be seen to be believed. Shock

unlucky83 · 19/06/2015 16:12

Mrsted in our new bathroom we are going to have a boxed in type toilet for that very reason! If I wasn't I would box it over so at least it was a flat surface for a quick wipe clean.
What I really don't understand is our loo (a basic armitage shanks model - nothing fancy) also has an indent on either side just under the bowl - these have no discernible purpose apart from being a decorative feature (and that's debatable) ...they are just good at collecting dust ...
who ever designed that toilet has never cleaned one on a regular basis (also it is a skid magnet - don't think it is possible to 'empty your bowels' without causing one)- it gives me the rage!

Sazzle41 · 19/06/2015 16:13

Behind the wooden tv unit is the only one. Generally very tidy & love a good clean/making it look fresh and nice. But do admit to leaving skirting boards til i notice the dust ....and the fridge freezer wont budge anyway when i try to move it to clean behind/under it.

morage · 19/06/2015 16:15

A friend mended my washing machine. They asked before putting it back into its space if I wanted to clean the space out, I declined. :)

Enb76 · 19/06/2015 16:17

Most of it - I only clean the bits I can see. I don't really understand the need to be dusting and washing down of everything. As long as the house is fairly tidy and not completely dirty I'm really not bothered. I hate being inside really clean houses, they make me feel uncomfortable.

TheFlis12345 · 19/06/2015 16:22

unlucky, that would be one of the things my mother will tell you "must have been designed by a man who has never cleaned a thing in his life!!" Grin Other things that fall into this category frequently include hobs that have ridges and non removable buttons, awkward areas of fridges etc.
