Nerf guns

I don't like them. Lots of DSs friends have them. Lots of parents I know are happy about them.

DP has ordered them for the 3 DSs without telling me. I am v unhappy. DS1 has ADHD and has impulse issues. He is not able to stop doing something when he's 'in the zone'

DSs know he has ordered them.

MN jury do you have them?

Not even a water pistol Eigg?

Eigg · 15/06/2015 22:17

Excellent point Sparkling after much negotiation, I did recently relax my rule to (grudgingly) allow the least 'gun like' super soaker thing my DH could find.

If it was purely up to me I wouldn't even have bought that but sometimes compromise is necessary.

Nerf is a big no no though and to be fair the DC do accept that.

Mercury5000 · 15/06/2015 22:18

Definitely safety goggles needed. Heard of some nasty nerf injuries to eyes.

Sparklingbrook · 15/06/2015 22:19

Super Soakers are great fun. Grin

are the Dc allowed to play Nerf at friend's houses?

SoupDragon · 15/06/2015 22:22

DSs have them, DD has one and I have one. I used to use mine as a parenting technique :) DS2 was being slow getting ready for bed one evening so I leaned round the newel post at the foot of the stairs and shot him in the butt whilst he procrastinated in the bathroom upstairs :) it earned me his respect (he was 13 at the time)

Eigg · 15/06/2015 22:24

Actually, none of their friends have them so it hasn't come up.

My friend's (she of the returned gift)DC have them and they have played with them there.

As you can imagine there was a distinct lack of sympathy from Mummy regarding nerf related injuries.

I'm pleased to see lots of sensible goggle wearing going on in this thread though.

Sparklingbrook · 15/06/2015 22:28

When DH wears the goggles it reminds me of a) a fly b) Bono.

The shelter is really good, I have been known to sit in it. Grin

Eigg · 15/06/2015 22:31

Grin. I imagine that neither your DH or Bono would be particularly flattered by that description.

SayThisOnlyOnce · 15/06/2015 22:31

We have zillions of them. They are fun. And as safe as most other stuff they play with. My only gripe is the amount of batteries they need. They should just come with a charger. That would be loads easier.

I think having targets is a good idea; I usually set targets up for indoor nerfing and save the craziness for outdoors.

Mind my DC have pen knives and air rifles and all sorts.

littlejohnnydory · 15/06/2015 22:32

Ds was given one as a birthday present. I wasn't pleased but let him keep it with the rule that it is for shooting targets, not people.

SayThisOnlyOnce · 15/06/2015 22:32

(Plus my DH used to carry a gun for work: Good Guys have guns too, you can be a hero with a gun rather than a baddy with a gun)

steff13 · 15/06/2015 22:33

My boys have lots of them, my daughter (age 4) has one. They frequently go to a friend's farm for "Nerf Wars." They also play with them inside the house at home, they are just not supposed to aim for the face. We've never had an injury, but the cats will eat the darts if they get ahold of them, so we have to be careful to pick them up.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 16/06/2015 03:07

Buy the "bullets" on eBay! I got 400 for about £7 and the shops here charge a fiver for 10 Shock

sashh · 16/06/2015 05:37

My carer is 37 over 21 and has a collection. He also takes them appart, paints them, adds bits and sells them on ebay.

I have those annoying glass panes over the top of doors, their only purpose is to act as a target.

The cat quite enjoys them too.

Moreisnnogedag · 16/06/2015 05:40

Gosh that's a good buy! We've got them. Ds (4) loves running around the house firing the bullets at the ceiling and then finding them (in the manner of a puppy!) but knows no faces, no firing it at the cat or at all if his baby brother is in the room.

Charis1 · 16/06/2015 05:57

great fun. We have little ones and play inside. pretty hard to hurt anyone or do any damage with the little ones.

Sparklingbrook · 16/06/2015 08:14

I am not a huge Bono fan Eigg. It doesn't get me all of a flutter when DH wears the goggles. Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/06/2015 08:29

DH has a collection too, as does DB (13). Baby DS likes chewing the bullets. DD (3) isn't very interested yet - she's a menace with a sword, like a PP's DC, though.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 16/06/2015 08:32

We love a Nerf gun in this house and have somewhat of an armoury in the cupboard. My choice of weapon is the single shot gun. Buggers can fly I tell ya!

Makes great fun for a manhunt game around the house or Park.

And hilarious after a gin or 2! not just for the kids Grin

SayThisOnlyOnce · 16/06/2015 08:35

As a result of this thread I have had a GENIUS idea for biodegradable nerf darts with wild flower seeds embedded. Sadly a few minutes googling shows that I am not the first to think of this. But no one is making/selling them yet. They'd be fab though.

GooseyLoosey · 16/06/2015 08:39

We have them. Ds loves his so much, he bought dh one for Christmas and one of his favourite things is for his dad and him to make bases out of cushions etc and then bombard each other with them.

We too have a very strict "no faces" rule as the only chance I can see of one of them doing harm is to hit someone in the eye. Could ds 1 stick to this rule? If not, I agree that safety goggles might be the way forward.

ggggllll · 16/06/2015 08:58

They're a grand way to teach children impulse control because they're a lot of fun, they aren't really dangerous, and they have safety rules where you can withdraw the toy if they are broken. Which you should do with a calm but iron resolve, and no exceptions, ever.

Linskibinski · 16/06/2015 09:05

Every time I go to the loo in this house ds thinks it's hilarious to shoot me repeatedly. Drives me crazy. Dh did it last week. I threw the loo brush at him and my aim was true Grin

eosmum · 16/06/2015 09:11

Does anyone else have problems with their expensive ones just stopping working? DS has two really big ones one is a stampede ecs cost over 60quid last year, just changed the batteries and it just doesn't work, same with his other big one. No idea how to get them fixed.

HellKitty · 16/06/2015 09:16

We have them, youngest is asd. I also bought the cheap mini ones for their Christmas stockings - including DPs. That filled an hour on Christmas morning.
