I have booked a family holiday in August, all paid. However I am getting a bit anxious about all the new warnings about "only travelling there if necessary". In fact very anxious should I cancel?!Or am i being a drama queen?!

I'm going to Icmeler in August too (might see you there, OP).
I'm not worried at all. Been to Turkey the last three years and always felt safe. It is a huge country, the troubled borders are well away from the tourist resorts.

ordinarylives · 14/06/2015 23:38

My daughter had a very nasty accident in Turkey a couple of years ago, I can honestly say her treatment at the hospital was second to none, fantastic doctor and nurses, extremely clean, and put our nhs hospitals to shame. Third world country? the Turkish in their own words have never had it so good!

hibbledibble · 14/06/2015 23:42

I went on holiday close to icmeler recently, and it was absolutely fine. It is very safe there, quite likely more so than in England.

The Turkish government has a huge vested interest in protecting tourism, and locals are very keen to be welcoming.

In short: go!

Thancred · 14/06/2015 23:55

Someone I was with took ill in Turkey and the hospital was brilliant. Clean, modern, thorough in their treatment, and the level of care was wonderful.

havemercy · 15/06/2015 00:07

I've just come back from Turkey. It was the most amazing holiday I've ever had. We went near Icmeler. The locals are so friendly and welcoming. We stuck to tourist resorts and never felt unsafe. I was apprehensive before going but can honestly I had an fantastic time.

Turkey is a huge country. And I'm sure Icmeler is far from the Syrian border. I have never been anywhere so friendly in all my life.

Shakshuka · 15/06/2015 00:59

I'd go to Turkey, just not the southeast. I'm pretty risk averse and absolutely wouldn't go somewhere like sharm el sheikh which isn't spectacularly safe by any stretch of the imagination.

Turkey is fine. There is some risk wherever you go but there's a terrorist threat in London too

lordsandladies · 15/06/2015 01:10

Let's be honest apart from the outer hebrides if you go anywhere at the moment you are at a higher risk of terrorist attack. Sad but true.

I'm sure it will be fine, I'd travel.

dexter73 · 15/06/2015 07:44

I've just come back from Turkey and am booked to go again in September. Go and have a lovely time!

iseveryoneelsemadorisitme · 15/06/2015 07:47

Thanks ladies I shall never read the express again !

We're off to Turkey in August too. We keep an eye on the news too. But so far we're OK with our decision.

jendot2 · 15/06/2015 07:53

I was in Turkey last week...a tourist resort and then istanbul. There were no problems, even with the elections in full swing!

IMHO the UK is far more at risk of terrorism at the moment.

Florabeebaby · 15/06/2015 08:20

We came back from Antalya last week. Perfectly safe, no problems at all. Like the others have said, it's the Syrian border you need to worry about not the tourist resorts.
And it's not a third world country, it's a booming economy with excellent health services if you need them! (My son did, he developed a rash on holiday and we took him to a doctor)

CoteDAzur · 15/06/2015 08:25

Go, of course.

Have you tried looking at a map? The distance between Icmeler and the Syrian border is far greater than the width of England.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/06/2015 09:37

You get a bomb in Turkey and you rely on goodwill and luck.

And there speaks the voice of the ill-informed. There's nothing wrong with the quality of healthcare the Turkish system provides. It's often better than NHS in places. Some of my family actually choose to be treated in the Turkish system rather than the NHS.

It really isn't the third world. And as long as you don't go near the syrian border you'll be fine.

CoteDAzur · 15/06/2015 09:43

If you "get a bomb" anywhere in the world, luck has probably already deserted you.

Otherwise, you will not be abandoned on the sidewalk in Turkey or bandaged by incompetent clowns pretending to be doctors, as seems to be your truly ill-informed opinion.

magimedi · 15/06/2015 09:46

I can't believe you have ever been to Turkey. I've been going every year for 15 years or so & have had emergency medical treatment there (UTI) once & it was just as good as UK.

DH had a dental problem & had to have a tooth out & honestly, the dentist's facilities & equipment put many UK dentists to shame.

Tollygunge · 15/06/2015 09:47

The express article puts risk of tourism as 'high'. Am I mistaken in thinking that's better than the UK where it is 'imminent' according to govt?

jossiesGiants1 · 15/06/2015 10:02

Im going to Kusadasi , it is 1,392Km away from Aleppo which is just inside the Syrian border... I think i'll be safe and risk it

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/06/2015 10:07

magi, I've had a lot of my dental work done in Turkey for the last few years. I can't fault it. The Turkish dentist has done a very good job at fixing the total cock ups and shoddy work of my NHS one.

To say I'm slightly nervous about visiting my nhs one as an emergency this morning would be an understatement. Apart from the fact that it might have been quicker to fly to turkey and get an appointment, I've a nasty suspicion that I might have to go and get it corrected anyway.

dexter73 · 15/06/2015 10:09

I think the risk of tourism in Turkey is very high at the moment! It probably is much better than the risk of tourism in the UK if this weather is anything to go by!

magimedi · 15/06/2015 10:11

I wish I was in Turkiye!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/06/2015 10:19

So do I. Are you going back soon?

magimedi · 15/06/2015 10:21

September. Can't wait.

ThisTimeIAmMagic · 15/06/2015 11:05

I think the Express is the last source I would rely on for news...

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/06/2015 11:08

Lovely time of year to go. Need to get my passport renewed so I can go back again soon.
