To think it's weird that my houseguest took all the guest-toiletries?

We often have overnight guests so I keep a basket of spare toiletries in guest-room (in case they forget anything) and tell them to use whatever they need. Most people use a couple of things, some don't use anything, and I re-stock it between guests.
Recently my close friend stayed for 3 nights and when she left the basket was completely empty! AIBU to find this a bit cheeky and odd? Or did she think it was a basket of 'complimentary products' like hotels provide? I stocked the basket well (she's scatty and tends to forget things, so i expected a few products to be used but not for every item to vanish!)

Basket contained: new full-size pack of Olay cleansing wipes, mini bottle make-up remover, toothbrush, dental floss, lipsalve (all 3 in sealed packets), plastic comb, travel-size body-lotion, body-wipes, spray deodorant, some Clinique mini-products (free samples of make-up/creams that I collect and keep for guests) plus various sachets of moisturiser, BB creams, hair serum, facial scrub etc. Oh and a couple of individually-wrapped soaps, shower-caps and mini sewing-kits that I collected from hotels.

There is no way she could have used the whole lot in 3 days! If a friend provided a basket like this would you assume it was a gift for you to take home??

YANBU. Bloody greedy. I would ask her about it.
I quite fancy a stay at yours though - I love the mini basket idea! Very thoughtful.

ThingummyJigg · 13/06/2015 11:19

Blimey.

When will you next be staying with her and what will you take home with you?

Aim high, I say go for the sofa.

grapejuicerocks · 13/06/2015 11:19

3 lip salves.

3....

IDontDoIroning · 13/06/2015 11:19

Can you ask for these things back ?

Leave her some laxative chocolate and trick soap if she ever does return. The trick soap turns your skin blue for ages.

"Oh and a couple of individually-wrapped soaps, shower-caps and mini sewing-kits that I collected from hotels."

She stole from you but you stole a few bits from hotels.

ThingummyJigg · 13/06/2015 11:21

PS yes you are a very thoughtful hostess and your friend has more cheek than my arse (massive)

PPS Forget the sofa - take the bitch's car.

It's these threads that keep me on mn. Just when you think you've heard it all Grin .

tobysmum77 · 13/06/2015 11:23

Klayden taking complimentary soap from a hotel is categorically not stealing. Tight, yes but stealing no.

I thought that at first grapejuice, but I'm assuming the toothbrush, floss and lip salve were sealed.
Really very grabby behaviour from your friend OP.
I'd be tempted to text her and ask where she left them as someone suggested upthread.

cozietoesie · 13/06/2015 11:24

I'd say nothing - she'll be well aware that she's popped them in her bag. I do think I'd reassess the 'friendship' though.

Some people like dinky toiletries but I'm sure that any of my friends or relatives would only have commented on how nice they were (and this has happened in our house) - and might then have got a little basket of their own as an extra pressy at birthday or Xmas.

Smellyoulateralligator · 13/06/2015 11:25

Klayden, that's not stealing.
Taking the towels or kettle would be though

cozietoesie · 13/06/2015 11:27

Hah! If I were the OP, I'd actually be checking the towels and the pillowcases after that. (I'm assuming the kettle would be just too obvious.)

Grin Grin Grin love it!

CatthiefKeith · 13/06/2015 11:29

Klayden, as an ex hotelier I can assure you that anyone staying at a hotel has already paid for the complimentary toiletries, they are built into the price of the room.

I collect them every time I stay in a hotel and do the same as OP - use them for my guest room.

Klayden · 13/06/2015 11:30

Clearly you hotel toiletry takers did not read the thread where the hotel charged for stealing!

Apatite1 · 13/06/2015 11:33

Taking the mini toiletries is not stealing. Taking a full sized bottle of shower gel is.

tobysmum77 · 13/06/2015 11:33

Klayden I used to work in one.

ttc2015 · 13/06/2015 11:35

Very rude from your friend indeed and sneaky. I'd text as someone above said 'i can't find the guest toiletress, where did you put them'. She either fesses up or lies and says she somehow used them all. Perhaps she thought once opened you wouldn't want any more, who knows? By texting though you find out if she's just grabby or a liar to boot or has indeed put them somewhere like her bag.

cozietoesie · 13/06/2015 11:35

I work from home and don't stay in hotels any more - so buy them online.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 13/06/2015 11:36

Do text and ask. Must be quite ££ when you tot it all up Hmm

Smellyoulateralligator · 13/06/2015 11:38

Cozie I wouldn't be surprised if the guest swiped all the tea, coffee, milk and raided the freezer. It's such bizarre behaviour. Has she stayed at your house before OP? Does she have form?

GingerLDN · 13/06/2015 11:39

In what way is taking complimentary toiletries left for you in your hotel room stealing? Unless the miniature bottles are to be refilled.

Your friend has been really rude, what a cheek. Not sure what you should do, I'd probably say nothing and simmer with resentment Blush
