airlines should be banned from increasing prices the more you search

This pisses me off no end. The more you search for a particular flight the higher its cost goes. Even ba do this shady thing! Luckily I know that you just have to clear all your cookies and start again to get the original price. But they must trick millions out of people that don't know how to do it.

I've heard this rumour, but it can't be true, surely? It would be illegal, wouldn't it? Confused

I recently booked Easyjet flights and the price didn't change at all over several searches on different days. No cookie clearing, no incognito windows. I've never had a price go up on Amazon either.

Trading Standards would be on this like a shot, wouldn't they?

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2015 19:08

Incognito browsing saved me £3000 on flights last year
I have the screen shots to prove it

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2015 19:09

Car insurance is the same : Direct Line admit to it.

People don't think they're on an auction site when they buy a flight. They assume there will be no differentiation between the price that person A is charged at the same time and date, and person B. But by the sound of it, there is. Also the people trying hardest to get a good price are being charged the most, how is that right.

AyeAmarok · 11/06/2015 20:37
Shock

This is shocking! Thanks for the tip though for incognito browsing.

fufulina · 11/06/2015 20:39

Not an urban myth. And not just flights - hotels, too. Private browsing sorts it.

TheXxed · 11/06/2015 20:46

OMGGG this makes so much sense!!!!! The cheeky bastards!!!

HelloIAmBaymax · 11/06/2015 20:57

I've read this on travel forums before but have never experienced it, and I search for flights very frequently. The price has never increased when I'm doing multiple searches.

poisonedbypen · 11/06/2015 21:37

Wasn't true when I tested it recently

Birdsgottafly · 11/06/2015 21:56

This isn't an Urban Myth, anyone with more than one laptop can check this out, it happens with Hotels and Train tickets as well.

backtowork2015 · 11/06/2015 21:57

definitely true, confirmed by thomas cook themselves when I queried a £50 overnight hike, my own fault I gave them 3 separate hits, at home, at work and in mobile. ...wont be checking again til ready to bookGrin

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2015 22:04

Open your browser twice - once in incognito
get a quote for a holiday or car insurance or a flight ..... screen capture.
Close out of browsers
do it again
the non incognito price will have gone up

slithytove · 11/06/2015 22:07

This happened to me recently with trains. It is definitely a thing.

kittyvet · 11/06/2015 22:09

Same for trains too. Was buying trenitalia tickets and price went up by 6 euro. Clearing cookies and private browsing didn't help. Logged on next day on old PC- back to old price. Sneaky!

FreudiansSlipper · 11/06/2015 22:10

I have cleared my iPhone and my laptop and tested this

cheaper flights on iPhone

on my laptop the same or more expensive

I do not understand how this is the case and yes it is very wrong

HelloIAmBaymax · 11/06/2015 22:11

So why haven't I ever experienced it? I usually have multiple windows open on a couple of different devices checking flights, trains and hotels. Not once have I ever seen the price rise, or a different price on one device.

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2015 22:15

Hello
it happens when you close out and go back in

eg
I was looking at flights to New York.
First night I looked they were £400
second night they were £800
third night they were £950
then I went incognito and they were £400 again
so I bought them

eg 2
car insurance
get a renewal quote
go online to check it = get a lower price
go online incognito as a new customer = MUCH lower price

keeptothewhiteline · 11/06/2015 22:15

I have never seen it. We have three broadband lines in our house, many devices. I don't believe it.

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2015 22:16

I've never seen Australia ....

Coincidenceschmoincidence · 11/06/2015 22:21

It does happen. Had it with air fares, train tickets and holidays last year. It's a pain in the arse.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 11/06/2015 22:31

Why on earth would it be illegal, or anything to do with trading standards? Confused They can make the price whatever they want.
