To love hanging the washing out in the middle of the night?

Knowing it will be nearly dry by morning.
Both kids in bed, asleep.
Nobody mowing their lawns.
So quiet and peaceful.
Also, as I generally wear just a t-shirt, it gets a bit cold. And I know that I can jump straight into my bedto warm up.,

My gran had strange ideas about lots of things but this was one of the tamer ones! Sticking left out washing through a 90 degree boil wash to cleanse it of evil spirits was funny!

echt · 13/06/2015 08:28

I've just nipped out in the gathering gloom to hang out my washing (Australia).

One thing I do like is hanging out the washing in the moonlight. There's very little light pollution here, side streets are only lit on one side and none of that nasty sodium glare stuff. On a clear moonlit night, the light is intense, with sharp shadows.

I've only ever got one spider in my washing.

MrsHenryMountbattenWindsor · 13/06/2015 09:54

The only way to spiritually cleanse something is to leave it out under the light of a full moon not joking.

90 degree wash is no bloody good.

nitsparty · 13/06/2015 10:25

i envy you lot for the posh places you live in. If i were to hang washing out at any time of day or night they would nick the washing, the washing line and the posts or trees I'd tied them to. lovely area. insurance companies love us round here.

MrsHathaway · 13/06/2015 10:26

Only one spider in the washing in Australia. (paraphrased)

Given the reputation of Aussie spiders I'd say that corresponds to about fifty-eight in Surrey.

Taytocrisps · 13/06/2015 12:27

YANBU but I wouldn't fancy it myself (spiders). My rotary clothesline tends to attract spiders but at least during the day I can see 'em. Also, we get very severe frosts here at night right up to maybe the end of May so my clothes would be constantly frozen if I hung them out at night.

I mostly hang my clothes outside though (during the day obviously) and nothing beats that fresh smell of sunshine and wind.

And I always match my clothes pegs.

Haggisfish · 13/06/2015 12:36

Yanbu. Love hanging washing out at night.

Cheesymonster · 13/06/2015 12:42

I once found an earwig in my sock as a child.

mygrandchildrenrock · 13/06/2015 12:53

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant Do you wear anything else as well as your t-shirt? If not, then I suspect you are an exhibitionist who uses the guise of hanging out the washing to have your secret thrill! Grin

I used to live in a part of Manchester where if you pegged washing out at night, it would have been stolen by the morning!

MonoNoAware · 13/06/2015 13:12

I had no idea you could do this. How warm does it need to be?

When I used to camp, any tea towels left outside were always soaked by morning, even if they were dry-ish when hung out. I do wash in the evening but tend to either do towels (that are better tumble dried) or use one of those pop up clothes airers that I can lift outside for an hour or so if not fully dry by morning.

tictactoad · 13/06/2015 13:28

I've done it on occasions when there's lots of it (think returning uni students Hmm or after a holiday)

No spiders, no night time cooties, no nasty niffs and it's never been possessed by evil spirits.

Will have to try harder Grin

MrsHenryMountbattenWindsor · 13/06/2015 17:37

Mono I've never known washing to actually dry over night (except in the very height of summer) but it does mean it catches all the early morning sun and is dry by the time I get round to taking the next load out at lunch time.

Plomino · 13/06/2015 20:23

I love it ! Hang it out last thing and get it in when the first load from the morning's ready to go . Always smells the nicest too . And I've never had a spider .

OpalQuartz · 14/06/2015 22:59

I leave it out all day after hanging it out the evening before. I hung it out at about 6 this evening as it's forecast to be dry overnight and tomorrow and thought of this thread. I wondered if any of my neighbours were saying "Ooh look at that Opal at number 42. That washing will get darked on, mark my words." Grin My 77 year old dad remembers his mum being very disapproving of one of their neighbours hanging washing out on a Sunday!

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 15/06/2015 07:41

Mygrandchildren
If it is warm, usually just a long baggy t-shirt that is probably more like a nighty. And a pair of slippers or crocs.
In a fully enclosed garden, in an area of bungalows, on the outskirts of a quiet village.
No chance of me or the washing being seen, unless the bogeyman breaks in!

Thanks, I was wondering! Grin
