to expect my GP to treat DD's veruccas

DD is student 19 has 3 veruccas, called the GP today asking if she can attend the regular cryo (freezing) weds afternoon clinic to be told that she has to have used shop bought treatments first, having had them and failed miserably in the past the GP was still insistent we try again as 'things might have changed' bearing in mind she is a student the freezing bazooka treatments at £15 aren't cheap. Our GP's no longer have face to face appts now anyway, they assess over the phone before it's rare to see one, just another money saving scheme.

I got rid of 8 of ds's in less than a month. Bazooka ( def not £15Confused)and filing down and reapplying every other night. Eventually when they die and turn black you can hook them out with an old pair of tweezers.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/06/2015 20:20

Oh and you use a corn plaster type thing so you keep the gel off the good skin.

ToBeeOrNot · 08/06/2015 20:27

After getting one plantar wart many years ago, I now have 4 of the damn things. All advice is just that they will go away eventually but it's well over 5 years now, it's really quite depressing as it's not like you can hide your hand's away in the same way as your feet.

THIS is the answer

Will need to try the duct tape on my DS as it seems to work for lots of people.

We got a prescription from our GP for some stuff you paint over the verucca but weeks later and it's still there.

Mustard969 · 08/06/2015 20:35

Verrugon took 8 days to get rid of a huge 5 year verruca

Eastpoint · 08/06/2015 20:43

Having tried Wartner & Bazooka to no avail I went to a chiropodist and had freezing treatment still no success. She said that they sometimes stay for years and then just disappear. I stopped going and then it went on its own.

momtothree · 08/06/2015 20:53

I used the small plasters they come with a spot of poison that sticks on. Fantastic results after months of freezing duck tape.etc

timetosmile · 08/06/2015 21:00

There's insufficient evidence that freezing them with 'proper' cryotherapy is effective enough to warrant it being offered as a service by GPs any more. They are advised not to treat them in medical guidance from the government, and will not get any remuneration if they do...so they don't. Iy's not just your particular GP being akward.

I think chiropodists still offer it as a private service though.

grannytomine · 08/06/2015 21:07

Chiropodist recommended duct tape and it worked.

missorinoco · 08/06/2015 21:14

Another vote for duct tape, although I see it hasn't worked for the OP.
I researched what to do for a verruca here and on a variety of other sites. Verruca gone within 2 weeks. Marvellous stuff.

(Although digging out a black head sounded sordidly appealing.)

Sidge · 08/06/2015 21:26

They tend to get painful if they have a lot of dry hard skin built up around the wart. If you use a pumice stone daily to reduce the callus, and then use the OTC stuff it will penetrate better. Also tends to reduce the pain and discomfort.

drivingmisspotty · 08/06/2015 21:31

Just look at the Customers who bought this also bought list on Mustard's link for loads of ideas. Poor things.

Soduthen116 · 08/06/2015 21:39

I have used sand paper on my dss monsters. Worked a treat. Very satisfying too.

Pastaagain78 · 08/06/2015 21:40

Duct tape worked really well for my DS. His verruca was a stubbon bugger. How to do duct tape treatment is on the NHS website. Worked brilliantly.

Littleorangecat · 08/06/2015 21:44

I had a 10 year old verruca, it was older than my son. It was a super verruca, I thought the blumming thing would never go.
In the end I used Scholl freezing spray twice a week for 4 weeks and it just seemed to 'dry' it up and it became like a patch of dry skin and came off really easily.
My son now has 3 whoppers which bazooka has failed so I'm going to do the same for him.

Walkingonsunshine00 · 08/06/2015 21:45

Yabu did had 27 yes 27!!! For about 4 years, eventually they went away by them selfs

CalleighDoodle · 08/06/2015 21:45

Ive had one for 15 years. Tried all the over counter stuff, seen 3 different private pediatrists, tried all the old wives tales. Was eventually referred to cryo by gp. Attended for 12 months. No change at all. Cryo nurse referred me back to docs. Thet wont do anything else. Nearly two years ago there was talk of cutting it out. Seems theyve changed their minds.

CalleighDoodle · 08/06/2015 21:45

So i feel
Your frustration

Sorka · 08/06/2015 21:48

YANBU. I had verrucas when I was 16/17 and over the counter treatments DID NOT WORK. They just don't for some people. I tried them all and followed the instructions religiously. GP wouldn't freeze them off and referred me to the hospital. The waiting list was months long and they kept cancelling and rescheduling my appointment until I was due to be seen 14 months after my referral (and six months after the latest reschedule).

By that point three quarters of one heel was covered in a thick thick layer of verruca, there were patches on both feet, one in the cuticle of my big toe and one on my thumb.

My Dad ended up paying for me to see a chiropodist fortnightly for 9 months. It was agony. The chiropodist said it was the worse case she'd seen. I still have a manky big toe nail from the damage caused.

Got another one at uni and managed to get the GP to freeze it off. I think he took pity on me because I was so distressed it had started again!

Nip it in the bud!

MelamineTeapot · 08/06/2015 21:53

From my experience the key to getting rid of verrucas is not the type of treatment, but that it's applied rigourously and regularly. There's no point just dabbing something on the surface of your skin a couple of times and expecting it to vanish. Verrucas are clever little viruses, they bury themselves deep under several layers of skin, your own skin that is specifically design to act as a barrier. in other words it is using your own body as a shield!. Unless you are working to break down this layer of protection in some way, to expose the virus, you don't stand much chance of getting rid of it.

meglet · 08/06/2015 21:53

a podiatrist should be able to zap it. I wouldn't see a gp.

Sorka · 08/06/2015 22:03

I was very good at sanding my verrucas once I knew I needed to do so so the treatments could get to them. The verrucas didn't respond even though the treatments were being put right on them.

The chiropodist said the sanding was spreading them, as I was picking up roots and then pushing them into healthy skin.

I remember trying salicylic acid, which didn't stop the verrucas but did burn a hole in the heel of my shoe. Also tried some green cream the chiropodist gave me (she worked her way round freezing and I applied the cream religiously between treatments). Many other things were tried pre-chiropodist.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 08/06/2015 22:13

Nothing worked on DD's verruca for six months. Then used banana skin stuck on with duct tape and verruca was gone in three days. Quite astonishing. Happened again a year later and it disappeared again. No idea how the banana works but it DOES.

PiggyPlumPie · 08/06/2015 22:22

I tried everything with mine including duct tape, banana skin, vinegar etc. Chiropodist tried dry needling which is basically stabbing repeatedly with a needle. Return appointment for debriding and verrucas all gone.

It kick starts the immune system to fight the virus. I had them on both feet and only the largest one was stabbed. All of them cleared up. Best £50 I spent.
