Got Lego Catalogue today. Looking through at all the exciting and colourful stuff for boys. Got to the Lego Friends page. Looking at the nice plane, check the figures.........

FLIGHT ATTENDANT SANDRA and PILOT DAVID. WTAF! Why is the pilot a bloke?!

Did no one at Lego has the wit to say 'errr women can be pilots'?

AIBU to be seriously unimpressed by this? Makes me bloody cross.

This is just shit.

On a related note, I flew to Copenhagen recently and on both flights there and back the captain was a woman. (A different one each time. AND they were profiling a female pilot in their in-flight magazine. I think it was FlyBe.) DH was a bit Hmm at how thrilled I was about this fact. I was practically rhapsodizing.

chippednailvarnish · 07/06/2015 11:58

Seems like females can't operate cameras either.

that reply fro LEGO Shock
They could have saved the effort and just written "don't worry your pretty little head"

Icimoi · 07/06/2015 12:05

Can we send the folks at Lego a link to a full explanation of the correct use of "who" and "whom"?

ImSoCoolNow · 07/06/2015 12:09

YABU. It's a toy. If you don't want your daughter to play with it then don't buy it

noblegiraffe · 07/06/2015 12:20

Those who are pointing to the lego scientist range as proof that Lego are interested in gender equality have missed the bit where it wasn't Lego's idea, but was submitted to their Lego Ideas project by a scientist, had to get 10,000 supporters to be considered, and was only released as a limited edition set.

The Lego pop star red carpet set is vile. All about grooming and posing and looking fabulous.

BadLad those reviews are absolute quality Grin

BadLad · 07/06/2015 12:40

Glad you enjoyed them.

I'm the mother of 2 sons. My youngest son is off to uni in September to study adult nursing. He has experienced some sexism over his choice, sometimes from teachers, but he's very confident in his decision and he has not once said to me "Mum, I'd love to be a nurse but I can't because all the nurses in my Lego hospital are female!"

undoubtedly · 07/06/2015 13:07

The fact that some men do traditionally "female" jobs and some women do traditionally "male" jobs just isn't the point at all.

Well done to your son for getting into it though, and stuff what anyone else thinks!

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/06/2015 15:11

I have the Lego scientist range. This is what DD actually me did with it...

DD is four and asks me fair amount, "is it for boys/girls?" I always answer, "it's for both, DD" but she is getting that message form somewhere. She didn't ask that about the Lego scientists, because they are women.

I really don't see why it's a problem. Men can be pilots you know OP Shock Also, let's face it, most pilots are male. Think you're making an issue over nothing.

JassyRadlett · 07/06/2015 16:16

Also, let's face it, most pilots are male. Think you're making an issue over nothing.

Yes. That's not an issue at all.

Bunbaker · 07/06/2015 16:31

I must admit I fail to get worked up over a plastic toy. I think there are far more important battles to fight than this.

changeshow · 07/06/2015 17:33

Bun baker there are bigger fights to fight. And Iliveinalightetc I do have a fantastic carefree life, and this does worry me.

But still, I find this offensive. Yes actually offensive. That in the Lego marketed at girls the pilot is not a girl. And nor is the boat captain. It strikes a misstep.

messyisthenewtidy · 07/06/2015 18:37

Sera, sorry I was slow to reply but yes your solution is absolutely right.

I think that the boy going into nursing scenario is different. Men do not generally shy away from "female" jobs because society tells them they do not have the brains or bravery to do them, as girls are told with male dominated jobs but because it is considered "girly" and therefore beneath them.

Once in, the natural leadership skills and ambition that we believe men have will see that they have a good chance to overtake women. Oh and the lack of childcare break.

SomewhereIBelong · 07/06/2015 19:02

"That in the Lego marketed at girls the pilot is not a girl"

  • except when it is a private jet one.. it is only the airport set where the pilot is male.
changeshow · 08/06/2015 20:40

SomewhereIbelong- yes the private jet pilot is a girl. But the boy gets to wear the uniform.

Ok so in the hotel the boys is a bellhop. But that's not the piont today Smile

change I know we've had a difference of opinion on this thread (a while back) but your last post totally reminded me of "But apart from xyzabc...what else have the Romans done for us?"

Smile
missorinoco · 08/06/2015 21:09

By some freak coincidence DD has been given the private jet set over the weekend.
The pilot is a woman, but she forgot her clothes. If her skirt moved when she sat down her knickers would be on show.

"Matthew," who accompanies her, gets trousers and a t-shirt. Somehow DD (and DH) thought he was also a girl. Metrosexual Matthew, I think.

chippednailvarnish · 08/06/2015 21:17

Well there's also Nate the taxi driver, from the hotel. Can't see his knickers, mind.

Ah ha! Another point to get riled about. Clothing. The boys are fully clothed and the girls are in shorts and vests.

Shakey. Grin

OMG nooooooooooooooooooooo - she is slim with long hair wearing a SKIRT ... like the lego figures. - how can you possibly put her forward as a role model. Shock Grin

Or is it just plastic that has to conform.

Ubik1 · 09/06/2015 11:33

You can fly a plane with long hair and a skirt so I'm told
