To give my dinner guests a take away?

Oh God. I had a beautiful meal planned for my neighbours tonight; slow cooked beef rump in a lovely sauce.

Forgot to turn the shitting slow cooker on before I left the house this morning Sad I fully burst into tears in front of a bemused DH. I am actually stupid. I was so looking forward to it.

It's half an hour before they get here (only just in from work) so there is no time to make something else. I'm going to be the subject of one of those awful dinner party threads, I just know it.

There's no other food in, not shopping day until tomorrow.

It's beans on toast or takeaway. DH is brightly brandishing Indian takeaway menus and saying we'll just pay for a big Indian.

Is this ok? I feel so sorry for my neighbours, they've organised one of their mums to babysit and looking forward to this!

Sounds like my kind of dinner party!!!

Stitchintime1 · 29/05/2015 20:51

The enthusiasm of most people's responses makes me wonder if takeaways are generally regarded as preferable to someone's dinner party food.

KatieScarlettreregged · 29/05/2015 20:52

I would weep tears of relief and gratitude.
My favourite food, ever Smile

BeaufortBelle · 29/05/2015 20:52

I hope you are having a lovely time now. It will be lovely too. Enjoy and have fun.

BikeRunSki · 29/05/2015 20:57

In the olden days of the 1980s my dad rocked up with 8 work visitors from the USA and expected mum to rummage up dinner. She went and got fish and chips. Everyone was talking about how resourceful DM was for years...

Enjoy your curry.

TheAuthoress · 29/05/2015 20:58

They won't mind! We were having friends round for dinner and I was making a dish I'd never made before. The recipe said to put in a teaspoon of flour to thicken the sauce, which is misread as a tablespoon, thought it was a bit much but do e it away way! stuck the lid back on went back to chatting with our friends.

When I checked again it was a disgusting, thick floury mess of gloop Blush and we had to get in indian takeaway! We bought it, they offered to pay for their share but I would have felt terrible!

TheAuthoress · 29/05/2015 20:59

Must remember to proof read! done it anyway

LemonYellowSun · 29/05/2015 21:03

I would love a full on Indian takeaway paid for by someone else Wink

SaucyJack · 29/05/2015 21:08

A mushroom madras is never unreasonable (specially if someone else is paying)

ThatSmirkingWhore · 29/05/2015 21:09

To be quite frank, I'd love the takeaway, but I'd happily eat the beans on toast.
I go to friends houses for the company, not the food.

Be honest, tell them you forgot to turn the slow cooker on, have a good laugh about how daft you are, crack on with ordering the takeout and enjoy the rest of your night with your friends.

It's not the end of the world, though I understand that feeling of upset/frustration when things don't go to plan.

BooChunky · 29/05/2015 21:46

I can't believe you didn't cook for us!!!

(I am the friend that's over... And the curry was delicious Wink)

listsandbudgets · 29/05/2015 21:53

I once went to a dinner party. We were all served heinz tomato soup, a variety
Of ready meals and fruit cocktail with sqirty cream all washed down with plenty of wine. We had a great time and hope that you are too

PuntasticUsername · 29/05/2015 22:29

See, I bloody love it when people do things like this, cos it confirms it's not just me who does stuff like this! Sounds as if the curry went down fine - would have done with me too! Anyone who can call themselves half decent friends wouldn't bat an eyelid.

WonderingWillow · 29/05/2015 23:10

It did go well Wink

I still feel like such an idiot though; I've put it on overnight though because DH will be having it for lunch tomorrow. And the next day. And the next... Grin

I really pride myself on serving nice food as well, and being a perfect hostess just like my mum. But with 20 minutes to go until they got here, I was still in sweaty work clothes, running the Hoover round and I facetimed my mum and just went 'it's all gone tits up. I'm serving wotsits for a starter and then it's curry menu's all round' and even she said that sounded nice Grin and her food is perfection. Although I think she was just being kind... Wink

OR she has been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

It happens to everyone at one time or another, I'm sure. Glad you had a good evening.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 29/05/2015 23:39

Oooo, I'd love a Wotsit started. Can't bear poncey shit.

Wotsits are PERFECT.

What a lovely dinner. Bet they had a lovely time.

Smile
TalkinPeace · 29/05/2015 23:47

I have often invited people to stay on the premise that the dinner on at least one night is delivery meal.
Its great because we all relax with an aperitif, the meal arrives, we all get exactly what we want and no washing up.

I love to cook but I also love to entertain and hiring caterers is part of entertaining

Minshu · 29/05/2015 23:49

No pombears? Wink

Slightly different, but MIL did this when we stayed with her once. She just laughed and found the take away menu. We had the slow cooked meal the next day. Smile

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 29/05/2015 23:51

It's fine! As long as you haven't forgotten the Wine
