... to be upset with nursery and WWYD? (Includes yucky photo so don't open if eating!)

So my 2.5 yr old DS went to nursery this morning, normally his nan picks him up but I was able to today.

He loves nursery and is always happy at drop off and pick up so not worried about how they treat him etc.

He often get's a sore bum on nursery days and occassionally hasn't been cleaned properly after a poo which is irritating but have just left it.

Today, however, is a whole new story. Was taking out emptying his nursery bag to get his dirty clothes (they often change them if they get grubby at lunch or in the garden) and his joggers are full of poo. He's still in nappies which we supply to nursery and we never ever get leaks at home, he wasn't soft or runny and it was literally lumps and squashed in as far down as his ankles!

I am absolutely fuming that a) he was left like this for so long without anyone smelling or noticing something and B) that the staff are clearly incompetent at putting nappies on - it shouldn't be that hard shpuld it given how many babies and toddlers they look after and therefore how mamy nappy changes they must do.

So, am I right to be angry? Wwyd? And how would you approach this with nursery without seeming like you're overreacting or one of "those" parents?

I seriously wouldn't just let it go that they repeatdly fail to clean him properly. Thats neglectful of them.

The environmental health department here want a sluice sink that is solely used for rinsing soiled clothes and for cleaning potties because of the risk of cross contamination.

Obviously this is impossible for most settings due to either financial or building implications.

Therefore we don't use pottys, children either go straight on to the toilet and for those that need extra reassurance we use the trainer type seats that sit on the toilet.

Regarding incidents like the one in the op enviro health guidance is to double bag the item, keep it out of childrens reach and return to parents. As I said, I personally would always attempt to get the worst of woth wipes or tissue and flush down the loo, but practitioners here would be within their rights to return items as the one in the op. Of course this doesn't mean I agree with it, I think it's very unhygienic to have a bag of shit hanging around all day.

I'm going to stick up for the nursery presumable a tab had come undone or he's pulled it he's done a poo which has then squashed on the top of joggers then dropped down and splodged in the ankle. It's now on both sides as its been folded out. There is a small lump left but cosidering the amount of poo needed to make that much I'd say the person changing has already had to scrap off the majority of it from the trousers and legs bottom of child a s flush down the toilet.
Even if you have a proper sluce sink it still has a normal if home if you scrubbed it you then gave pick up lumps of poo by hand! Been there done that.
Yes it's good to have heads up about accidents but if your potty training 5 Charente who all had Mille accidents that's day it is possible the staff may hZve forgotten to mention it given he is not actual being potty trained yet. Staff have to keep your child safe and clean I think scrubbing poo out of trousers is your job, especially as most people suggest throwing them because you don't want to clean them either!

Thanks double, although I've been out of practice since dd was born. Our la was happy with it being done in a toilet cubical kept just for dirty washing, that had a tap and toilet in it. Staff wearing gloves apron and mask if needed and washing out twice, once in cubical and again when apron and gloves had been disposed of in the yellow bin. I went around with the inspector just before I went on maternity leave and he asked the manager if he could use it as an example of best practice locally.

DillyDilly · 29/05/2015 17:24

Is it just me or does anyone else not think that the poo was originally at the bum part of the joggers and they were the folded, after changing, in a way that the poo got on to the bottom of the legs (after the joggers were changed)?

Marcipex · 29/05/2015 17:30

When I first worked in daycare, we had to wash out by hand items as soiled as this.
I can assure you no one enjoyed it though.
Since then, EH has advised not to; the person/surrounding area is inevitably contaminated by spray, whether you can see it or not.
I believe current advice is to double bag and send home.
Of course they should have warned you though.

NorksWar · 29/05/2015 18:53

Like DillyDilly says, to me it looks like the nappy leaked and the trousers were folded up making the poo go on the ankles of the trousers.

Absolutely agree that their job is to keep my son safe and clean, however the state of his joggers has led me to believe that he was left in a soiled nappy, that was leaking for whatever reason, for quite sometime!

And nowhere have I said I didn't want to clean his clothes - FYI I have already scrubbed them and hot washed them - that was never an issue, although a heads up would have been nice. The issue is how long my son was left to sit / play / eat his snack and lunch in poo for Confused.

Unfortunately the manager had already left for the day so I have emailed her with yucky picture included and hopefully will hear from her on Monday.

I'm glad you've emailed the manager. Was DS's bottom actually sore? If he'd been left like that for any time I expect it would have been. I do think they should have warmed about the state of the joggers in any event but obviously the main issue is about whether they changed DS quickly enough.

ILoveMyMonkey · 29/05/2015 20:00

Luckily his bum was fine thank goodness. Guess we'll see what happened on Monday and flagging it up hopefully means it wont happen again to us or anyone else.
