To wonder when does old shit become vintage?

Just that really - the local charity shop has a "vintage event" which as far as i can see, means upping the price on anything that my aged mother would wear and calling it "vintage". The same goes for "retro". My DD lives in Margate (for her many sins) and its retro this and vintage that, even Dreamland is being called a "vintage" theme park, well ok, there's the scenic railway but as far as i can see from peeking through a whole in the fence the rest of the stuff looks pretty modern high tech stuff of travelling fairs (not traditional at all!) - i remember Dreamland how it used to be and it is NOTHING like that! But they will call it "vintage/retro" and justify the millions of £££s spent.

I must be getting really curmudgeonly in my old age but it proper boils my piss.

Now don't get me wrong, i like old stuff but i don't want to pay through the nose for it because someone has called it vintage - oh and a bit of bunting does not vintage make!

When does old stuff become vintage?
When it's for sale!

tinyboxtim · 29/05/2015 09:18

When it becomes in vogue again.

SaucyJack · 29/05/2015 09:19

When you can find someone stupid enough to pay £££££ for it.

drbadbride · 29/05/2015 09:21

When a global financial crisis makes pretentious middle class people too poor to afford new shit

TwinkieTwinkle · 29/05/2015 09:21

When a bearded hipster declares it so.

Floisme · 29/05/2015 09:24

I agree. I'm old enough to remember when vintage just meant wine; everything else was second hand.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/05/2015 09:25

These are all good ideas Grin

AuntyMag10 · 29/05/2015 09:26

It's just someones old second hand stuff with a fancy name.

spad · 29/05/2015 09:28

Ha!

Somebody finally said it!

TheoriginalLEM · 29/05/2015 09:29

so anything that i have "sourced"from the skip is just old shit then? However if i decide to sell it i can call it vintage?

Once something preloved has been worn a few more times and the sweat-stains are now indistinguishable from the faded fabric.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 29/05/2015 09:32

When some pretentious lifestyle magazine declares it so. Even more so if said item has been sourced or invested in rather than bought.

balletnotlacrosse · 29/05/2015 13:34

There's a charity shop on our main road, and a 'vintage' shop a few doors down. The prices seem to be the main difference.

JoanHickson · 29/05/2015 13:40

£££

Summerisle1 · 29/05/2015 13:40

YANBU.

Round here I sometimes wonder if I've discovered time travel, so prolific is the old shyte disguised as 'vintage'. Certainly, it is mostly crappy old nonsense that's aimed at people with far more money than sense.

RonaldosAbs · 29/05/2015 14:23

The "official" rule on clothes is 20 years

ceebelle83 · 29/05/2015 17:00

I hear you. It's the same with the whole 'bespoke' bullshit.
If you didn't commission an item from design to construction, it ain't effing 'bespoke'!!

TheoriginalLEM · 29/05/2015 17:15

oh yes, and bespoke - don't even get me started on Artisan

Ponced up pretentious bollocks the lot of it!!!!

SaucyJack · 29/05/2015 17:19

I think some of my knickers are vintage then Blush

Sunny67 · 29/05/2015 17:26

Oooh glad it's not just me that ponders this. There is a Vintage shop round the corner from where I work, fancy shop sign, nice plants outside. About 30 metres from a community charity shop. Both smell just the same.

JoanHickson · 29/05/2015 17:27

I could raid my Mum's wardrobes a fully stockrd vintage shop. Wink

JoanHickson · 29/05/2015 17:27

Try again. I could raid my Mum's wardrobes and have a fully stocked shop.

RocknRollNerd · 29/05/2015 17:27

Oh if we're expanding into other pretentious wankery can we have 'street food' - when the fuck did a 'bab van become street food FFS!

UriGeller · 29/05/2015 17:28

I used to scour the charity shops in my 20s and you could really find some amazing stuff. beautiful shoes, fur coats (not my thing), ball gowns, jewellery, sometimes proper couture or beautifully hand made clothes.
Stuff that must have REALLY been in granny's attic.

Now everything thats worth anything is picked off before it even reaches the charity shops and sold as 'vintage' in auctions and by specialist buyers.

I know its great that the charities are making more £ for good causes but it takes the fun out of the whole thing Sad Angry

lamogliedilucazingaretti · 29/05/2015 17:31

Don't forget upcycling (tr: sanding and repainting second hand stuff).
