We have a couple of Chasseur ones that are brilliant - not as expensive as Le Creuset but if you keep an eye on them on Amazon they often have random ones at really good prices eg. we bought a huge lidded casserole in a dark purple/aubergine colour for about £40-50.

serin · 27/05/2015 21:26

I bought one on Amazon black Friday for £65, to replace the crappy Sainsbury ones that kept falling apart.

So far it has been used almost daily and I have to say it is fabulous.

JustCallMeBroken · 27/05/2015 21:28

You could buy 3 decent slow cookers for that price!Shock

WildFlowersAttractBees · 27/05/2015 21:29

We have the cast iron set so no enamel. I love them!

Lucy61 · 27/05/2015 21:30

They have them in Tk max every now then, for a lot less than that!

toothlessoldhag · 27/05/2015 21:33

I got fed up with lugging my 26" in and out of the oven and got a Lakeland lightweight one instead. Highly recommended. www.lakeland.co.uk/16489/Lightweight-Cast-Aluminium-24cm-Casserole

Ps yes that's a mad price for something that doesn't last a lifetime if you're as clumsy a cook as me.

You need a trip to France!

– Le Creuset Factory Outlet, 880, rue Olivier Deguise, Fresnoy-Le-Grand (near St. Quentin). 02230 France. Tel: 0033 323 06 22 45. About an hours drive from Amiens. Le Creuset has been making its cast iron pans here since 1925. Apparently each one is handcast from a single mould that's destroyed afterwards. Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 2.00pm to 6.45pm. Drive time from Calais; two hours.

The Le Creuset factory outlet sells top quality enamelled cast-iron kitchen items at a 35-40% discount on the normal retail price.

Every November there is a special sale.

LynetteScavo · 27/05/2015 21:34

Or Swindon.....

ScrambledSmegs · 27/05/2015 21:35

My dad finds the prices of Le Creuset obscene. Whenever he passes a display of them in a department store he can be heard muttering to himself 'but it's only pig iron!'.

Exactly. Sainsburys cast iron pans are good (I've got a couple) although not quite as hard wearing. But at £25 in the sale for a massive casserole, who cares?

I know! I picked up two brand new pans, small omelette type and one with griddle in the charity shop.
I was raising my eyebrows at paying £5 each for them.

I checked online and they are £90 each. I had to sit down. I've not bought any for ten years, had no idea they had become so expensive.

MrsTedCrilly · 27/05/2015 21:37

Cripes! Might sell mine if times get desperate Grin

Marshy · 27/05/2015 21:38

confused you must be very toned after 16 years

mindthegap79 · 27/05/2015 21:38

I believe they're glazed with saffron infused unicorn tears.

TisILeclerc · 27/05/2015 21:40

Mine were hotly contested in my divorce. I got the lot Grin

I expect people who pay that money for them have them out on display so everyone knows they have poncey casserole dishes

Confused Nope. Stuffed in the pan drawer along with everything else. I personally don't give a shit what people think about my casserole dishes.

Marshy · 27/05/2015 21:43

Do you get someone else to lift them then confused? I can hardly lift them in the shop let alone when full of something hot and delicious. I would never have them for that reason

antimatter · 27/05/2015 21:43

I bought a big one on Black Friday sales on Amazon. I love it!!
And got 2 small ones in charity shop few days ago!

ElsieMc · 27/05/2015 21:44

They are in our tk maxx at the moment. Not a particularly extensive range but around £25 for a smallish blue one. Also the storage sets etc from around £12. They also have similar casserole dishes in other brands that look pretty good as well.

BuggersMuddle · 27/05/2015 21:44

We got all but one of ours in TKMaxx, unfortunately I think some are slight seconds so one of ours has a few chips (on the outside though).

More recently we got a large Pyrex cast iron / enamel casserole dish through a supermarket offer (but even without they are much cheaper). It's not as pretty, but I think it's nearly as good (heats nice and evenly, good solid weight etc.).

Having said that I've had our first Le Creuset pan for at least 10 years and it's doing pretty well.

Although at 5' tall, I do not enjoy getting either the Pyrex or Le Creuset large casserole dishes out of the top oven when hot!

BravingSpring · 27/05/2015 21:45

I can recommend Denby cast iron casserole dishes, they're about £85 for a large oval one.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 27/05/2015 21:46

each one is handcast from a single mould that's destroyed afterwards

WHY???

Bloody Hell!

I bought one in France 25 years ago. I think I paid the equivalent of £15 for it. And I still use it regularly.
