AIBU?

That no one actually uses the baby names suggested on MN?

I see the same names suggested week after week on MN and I think to myself, are you being serious?! Who would actually call their child these names in real life?!

Some of them are so ugly, and ridiculous I cannot believe people seriously suggest them. what are these people trying to prove? Like Sybil or Gertrude etc. Aibu ?

We BOTH started on bonkers names BEFORE TTC so I'm not sure hormones have anything to do with it. I think you are either bonkers or you're not.

And what is exactly is wrong with being a hipster anyway. There is a shed ton out there of them. The whole thing about hipsters is that they try so hard to be different they all end up conforming with their beards anyway.

We have a friend with a Stanley, and have met a Mabel. Working class town here! (I really still don't like Stanley though)

I know a Stan, a Ronnie and Reggie who are twins. Wink and Nellie , love Nellie.

Years ago I knew of a Merlin, gorgeous baby who just suited the name.

It just comes across as so desperate to be different and make a statement, and often with a pinch of wannabe social climbing imo.

I enjoy it because names fascinate me but some are a bit bizarre.

I once saw Abigail pegged as "revolting" but Hermione was "classic."

My poor Abigail...

Like I said, each to their own, I personally dislike 'old' names, I think they sound very silly especially on a small baby. However, we've chosen a name for our boy that isn't even in the top 200, we weren't trying to be 'different', really surprised me its not more 'popular'. So I guess in a few months, I'll have deal with 'cat's bum's face' when we announce the kid's name, my karma Wink.

It is just personal taste.

I personally wouldn't listen to most of the shit on Radio 1. But I'd listen to XFM quite happily. Etc etc.

I don't quite get why some people seem to think that its their business as to whether a name has to pass a certain taste acceptability test a lot of the time.

My step-grandmother was a Sybil. I don't think its a horrible name for that reason. Certainly no worse than other grandparent or great grandparent names. Like Stanley...

There seem to be a lot of 'try hard' posters on that board.

I like Dorothea RevoltingPeasant I'd be temped to call her Dot or Dottie, its so cute! Grin

To each his own I think, I try not to judge other people's baby names too much, I wouldn't like it if someone did it to me. People can be nasty about a name and have no idea of a possible story behind it. Like a baby named after a deceased relative or something. We know a baby Bertie who was named after a great- grandparent.

The name we have chosen for DC1 if he's a boy is very old school and old- man style, so am prepared for strange looks!

Dd1 is called Iris ??, it seems to split people a lot. One woman once said 'oh. That's......flowery'. I couldn't care less as I love it. But it did make me laugh.

There's a thread over there where the name has to be 'fabulous' but can't be too girly or 'frilly', must sound 'hard'. I mean what the hell does that even mean??? The poster has got kids with 'old lady vintage shop' names.

I feel like suggesting Chloe, Amy or Kayleigh.

Honestly some people act like they are just TOO COOL to possibly call their kids anything popular, and I say that as a mum of kids with non-conformist names. I called them what I called then because I liked the names, I also liked lots of perfectly popular names too. I feel like these days people call their kids something which fits a certain image they are trying to portray. Quite often they just look a bit odd.

I've never quite understood the snobbery about sniff popular names. It is very 'I'm much cleverer/cooler/artistic/special than the masses'...

Ps naming kids after relatives is lovely, my dd has an old lady name she was given it many years ago in the 90s before they were trendy again, after my Grandma.

Sounds lovely Mamiof3, a nice story behind it you can tell your DD about.

I don't understand people who have obviously gone so out of their way NOT to chose a 'popular' name. And they bring it up when they talk about their choice like: 'Well it will stand out in a class full of Isabels, Lilly-Maes, Gracies and Lotties' If you like a name, you just LIKE it!
