That no one actually uses the baby names suggested on MN?

I see the same names suggested week after week on MN and I think to myself, are you being serious?! Who would actually call their child these names in real life?!

Some of them are so ugly, and ridiculous I cannot believe people seriously suggest them. what are these people trying to prove? Like Sybil or Gertrude etc. Aibu ?

Mavis isn't so bad - it goes beautifully with other Coronation Street names like Vera, Ivy and Audrey (all of which seem to be generally liked).

Bluepetra · 27/05/2015 16:30

I saw a Barbara !
No more words...Confused

I can just see the birth announcement..

What irritates me is the posters who just keep throwing out the same list of names over and over, no matter what the question.

"DD2 due in June. We're tossing up between Helena and Juliet as her name. Which do you prefer"

"I prefer Helena and you might also like to consider Amanda, Fiona, Hortense or Wendy".

I mean WTF?? Confused

ShadowFire · 27/05/2015 16:31

Some people may genuinely love names like Sybil and Gertrude. I think Sybil's actually quite pretty.

Tastes in names are quite an individual thing, and people will be influenced by all sorts of things. And some children in real life do have very rare names.

The most extreme baby name suggestion I've seen recently on MN is Sexburga. But I'm pretty sure (I hope!) that wasn't a serious suggestion.

Lol ballet exactly that.

BalloonSlayer · 27/05/2015 16:33

I am always Confused when I see one of my DCs names mentioned, such as "I already have a xxx, what should I call my new DS?"

Then people suggest Wilfred or Thor or Ptolemy and I want to post saying "Are you insane? No one who likes xxx would ever go for Wilfred or Thor or Ptolemy!"

But I don't.

Gileswithachainsaw · 27/05/2015 16:37

What is the etiquette regarding truly awful names?

like when you really cringe at the thought if baby Adolf crawling around and you wonder if a life of humiliation could have been prevented if you'd just spoken up?

Candycoco · 27/05/2015 16:39

On reflection, i think what is happening here is that the posters suggesting these extreme names, are simply trying to distance themselves from the masses as much as possible .. Is this a class thing? Don't see anyone ever suggesting Tyler or Courtney?

My little niece is called Mavis, she was named after our much- adored Grandma and it totally suits her.
I avoid the baby name board like the plague after seeing loving names get slated, and totally stupid names praised to the hills..

ollieplimsoles · 27/05/2015 16:42

*Lovely

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 27/05/2015 16:44

Sorry ollie I hope my post didn't irritate you too much.

ElkTheory · 27/05/2015 16:45

Does anyone remember the thread about someone calling her baby Slithery? I think it may have been Slithery Anne.

Obviously a wind-up but I often think of that thread when a particularly outlandish name is suggested on MN.

ollieplimsoles · 27/05/2015 16:50

StillStaying Not at all, everyone is entitled to their opinion! Grin

It is an old fashioned name that is not used much so my sister has had a few questions/ negative responses to it. But it really does suit her, she gives the name a new lease of life!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/05/2015 17:02

I think you're right, Candycoco. I never see anyone suggesting names that children actually get called.

TheFirstOfHerName · 27/05/2015 17:05

Somebody I know in real life has recently given their baby daughter a name that sounds almost identical to the word areola.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 27/05/2015 17:06

There is someone posting over there at the mo who likes similar names Candycoo...

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2015 17:25

I think its sad that too often people have favourite name choices, but lack the confidence to do with them, for no other reason that they are too worried about what everyone else will think.

I don't mean choices that have obvious nicknames that have rude meanings or names that you'd associate with something unpleasant. I mean just names that are slightly unusual or not bang on trend.

I do believe that one of the reasons certain names are really popular is because people try and fit in rather than because people love them that much.

And don't get me started on the bollocks that is the high court judge test.

silveroldie2 · 27/05/2015 17:41

What? I can't believe you didn't take the advice to call your new DS Tarquil Ptolemy Smile

Actually, there are some completely bonkers names put forward on Baby Names - can only assume it's pregnancy hormones, even for men.

ElizaPickford · 27/05/2015 17:46

I think you definitely have to factor in the role of hormones. My children were very nearly named after every single member of a famous 80's pop band. It all came right in the end. Grin

AmandaTanen · 27/05/2015 17:51

I do tend to avoid the baby names threads as a lot of names are not to my particular taste and I wouldn't actually say anything worth contributing on them.

my eldest child is called a Scottish name which is pronounced differently in different parts of the UK, and apparently I've named my youngest after a car, so what would I know about names.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 27/05/2015 17:54

I don't think you're being unreasonable. I've been looking for ideas, so do look at the names forum, some suggestions are just 'are you serious?'. I have honestly not come across a Wilfred, Mabel, Stanley or any other 'old person named child' in real life. I'm sure they are out there, but I always imagine they all live in some hipster community within London. Each to.their own, but it's the poor kid that's stuck with the name.

Ruedewakening · 27/05/2015 17:56

I know a child called Fuschia, I must remember to suggest that one sometimes soon...Grin (She's lovely fwiw!)

Ruedewakening · 27/05/2015 17:57

I know a Wilf and a Stanley too! you can tell I live in South London Grin
