to think hotels shouldn't invoice you for the toiletries?

Booked a weekend away for Dsis and DN for the former's birthday treat. DN must've got a bit carried away and took the mini shower gel/moisturiser home with her. B and B have left me a voice mail and sent an invoice for £44 quoting "stolen items" and threatening legal action if the invoice is unpaid. I've stayed in many many places of varying quality and have never experienced this. Has anyone else? AIBU to think this is a bit much?

Oooh wasn't there a thread about this a while ago? The OP had taken a huge container of shampoo etc home with her and got a real bollocking from the hotel.

How big was the shower gel, OP? Was it nailed to the wall?

BrianButterfield · 25/05/2015 19:48

Depends very much on the size of the bottles. I would say single use ones are fine to take, some hotels (Malmaison) provide big bottles with signs saying you can take them home. Usually large bottles no, but you say they're mini ones?

NerrSnerr · 25/05/2015 19:48

How big were the containers?

CaptainHolt · 25/05/2015 19:48

Does it specify what the 'stolen items' are?

I stayed in a hotel that had bath stuff in the bathroom that was for sale as well as the mini stuff that you get for free.

MurielWoods · 25/05/2015 19:49

I always do this in hotels. Did they specifically say it was for stolen toiletries? £44 doesn't sound right. Did she accidentally take the bathrobe or a lamp or something?

VivaLeBeaver · 25/05/2015 19:49

You weren't at Strattons were you?

Pixa · 25/05/2015 19:49

Does it just say 'stolen items'? Have they explicitly stated what was taken? Seems bizarre.

Grin at a lamp

CrohnicallyInflexible · 25/05/2015 19:53

If it's those tiny 10ml bottles that hold 2-3 'servings' of shower gel, then no, it should be priced in to the guests' bill, they should expect one of those to be used over a weekend. Let's face it, even if a guest didn't use all the gel, if any had been used at all, you would have to give a fresh bottle to the next guests.

However, if it was one of those large bottles attached to the wall with a squirt attachment, then absolutely you should be invoiced. The hotel will work out their prices based on replacing those every 10 guests or every week or whatever. £44 is a bit steep though! Was it just shower gel and moisturiser, or did they take anything else? Wondering how old DN is and whether she squirrelled anything else away (maybe she genuinely thought it was free, and is now too worked to own up?)

frangipani13 · 25/05/2015 19:53

It's the usual tiny bottles of shampoo, shower gel and moisturiser. I too had thought maybe it was a bathrobe or giant sized bottle but it's not, checked with sis. The invoice is a pdf entitled 'stolen items' which I think is pretty harsh.

If she took a mini shower gel and moisturiser that won't be what they're on about. Did they take towels, bathrobe or something. The hair dryer?

CrohnicallyInflexible · 25/05/2015 19:54

worked worried

Jackiebrambles · 25/05/2015 19:54

The mini toiletries are fair game surely? But if it's a 'normal' size bottle of naice hand wash and hand cream then that's taking the piss.

GooodMythicalMorning · 25/05/2015 19:54

Sounds like it must be more than just shampoo and conditioner etc. Did rhey give you an itemised list?

dailyfix · 25/05/2015 19:54

I wonder if she accidentally packed the fluffy bathrobe or full sized White Company Lotions.
Can't imagine what mini toiletries could possibly cost £44.

CrohnicallyInflexible · 25/05/2015 19:54

I would phone the hotel and ask them exactly what was taken!

NerrSnerr · 25/05/2015 19:55

You need to speak to the hotel. They can't be invoicing for the toiletries, everyone takes those.

frangipani13 · 25/05/2015 19:55

The invoice doesn't list anything so I've asked for a break down. I'm confident they haven't stolen anything else niece is 13 and knows what should/shouldn't be taken. Just find the whole thing quite weird

She didn't take the trouser press from the wall did she?

" ImperialBlether

Iirc that was very soon after I joined my and was my first proper aibu thread that I read (though aibu itself didn't exist )
Happy memories :) I was :o

PtolemysNeedle · 25/05/2015 19:56

I would double check that your dn hasn't taken anything else and hidden it from her mum, and ask the hotel to specify what the stolen items are.

cuntycowfacemonkey · 25/05/2015 19:56

Well the OP said DN must've got carried away and taken toiletries so doesn't sound like she knows for sure. I'm guessing it's something more like a bathrobe.

onepieceoflollipop · 25/05/2015 19:56

You need to email them to clarify. It seems a heavy handed on their behalf, I would word the email in terms of being quite distressed at being accused of stealing, particularly after your family members enjoyed a lovely break at their accommodation.

Penguito · 25/05/2015 19:56

I think you should clarify with the hotel what the 'stolen items' are- no way is £44 for that! And how would they know that your DN took them- surely you could have just used them while staying there?
