To find oven cleaning really hard?

Ok so I probably am just incompetent but how do you get the gunky slime out after leaving it in there without it oozing through the door hinge and all over the floor?
I only have a couple of hours to discover the secret of grown up oven cleaning!???!

Leave it on for a week.

Pristine Grin

PiggyPlumPie · 25/05/2015 22:16

I put a paste of bicarb on the bottom of the oven last night and DH wiped it off this morning. Think that's my plan for the future Grin

Jetgir1 · 25/05/2015 22:22

Worst household job EVER. Bar none. Not even cleaning toilets.

DayLillie · 25/05/2015 22:22

If you smear bi-carb round it after you have cleaned it, it does not look pretty, but it will just wipe clean next time.

Rub it into the annoying grooves.

This stuff is the bee's knees. Paint it on, leave it for a few hours/overnight then just wipe off. I prefer it to oven pride

mineofuselessinformation · 25/05/2015 22:36

Whatever gets it clean this time round, buy an oven liner for the bottom, a scraper from Lakeland and a wire scrubber.
Then, next time it gets a bit grubby, the scraper deals with the glass (along with hobrite if it's bad), the liner and the shelves go in the dishwasher. Pull the door open when everything's really hot and scrub with the wire scrubber (use gloves to save your nails) - all of the crap comes away easily.

Topseyt · 25/05/2015 22:55

I used Lakeland Oven Mate the last time I did my own oven. It was good and the best of any oven cleaners I have used.

A couple of years later I had a new oven fitted (nothing to do with the use of oven cleaner). Ever since then I have used an oven liner. Best thing ever. You just wash it in warm, soapy water, and bingo!!! Love it. I'll never be without one again. They are the greatest invention ever.

I also have some tenanted properties. If those ovens need cleaned then I pay professionals to go in and do them. I'm buggered if it am going to take them all on. Life is too short for all that malarkey. It usually costs around £50 - £60 and is money well spent IMHO.

Topseyt · 25/05/2015 23:00

Oh, and if you like to do roast dinners regularly, consider buying a lidded roaster. Stops spatter from the meat and allows you to collect lovely concentrated juices for adding to gravy. Win, win.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2015 23:02

I have a man in. It's the only way. He takes the oven apart and the door off and takes it all out to his magic van.

ChilliAndMint · 25/05/2015 23:06

Get this stuff from Home bargains but you need breathing apparatus. It works wonders:Dr Magic.

ClaimedByMe · 25/05/2015 23:07

My mum came round and cleaned mine last week, bless her wee heart.

WhirlyTwos · 25/05/2015 23:24

I am undoubtedly less ashamed than I should be when I say we have lived here for 11 years and I have never cleaned the oven bar once in the aftermath of an exploding lasagne incident and that was mainly so lasagne remnants could be salvaged for my hungry mongrels. Like I have never cleaned the car, and I never intend to; life is too short.

I suspect DH has done the oven a small number of times, but it doesn't look dirty. We're moving in 2 weeks and I had planned to spend a day or two cleaning when our furniture is out. I'm now very concerned about the scale of the task ahead.

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/05/2015 10:05

My oven died last year, I hated cleaning it so much I bit the bullet and bought one with a pyrolytic cycle. Basically it goes to such a high temperature that all dirt is reduced to ash, which you just have to brush away. There's still a bit of dirt around the door seal, but that's easy to reach and comes off in seconds with a steel wool pad.

It has been a godsend.

susiedaisy · 26/05/2015 10:09

Had mine professionally cleaned about 6 weeks ago after 15 years of doing it myself. Cost £59 for a double oven. Well worth it. They pulled it all apart. They took the Door off and cleaned it from top to bottom new bulb etc.

charliewolf · 26/05/2015 10:33

I keep an old shallow baking tray on the very bottom of the oven all the time, then it can just be lifted out to wash or can be chucked and replaced if it gets really bad.

I cleaned the glass in the oven door with bicarb paste and a scrubby sponge, took 4 rounds in the end but went from a totally ancient brown non-see-through layer to actual transparent glass :)

Totality22 · 26/05/2015 11:57

I cleaned my last oven once in about 7 years!!! OH cleaned it maybe a handful of times but I wouldn't even say it was done once a year

We bought a new cooker when we moved and the plan is to keep on top of that. It's on my 'to do' list.

steff13 · 26/05/2015 12:19

I usually use Easy Off, and occasionally I use the self-cleaning cycle. The self-cleaning cycle is nice; it burns up all the stuff and then I just vacuum the ashes out of the bottom when it's done.

MyCatIsAGit · 26/05/2015 12:21

We got a man in, and discovered after he'd cleaned it that the glass in the door was clear rather than non-see through as we'd always thought.

PoppyFleur · 26/05/2015 12:51

I hope never to have to clean the oven again. I am either moving, buying a new cooker or getting someone in to clean it. Frankly there are some jobs that life really is too short to have to do did not inherit house proud gene from parents

DayLillie · 26/05/2015 16:15

Just smear the insides with bicarb. Then you just need to wipe it round and put the shelves in the dishwasher. (and smear more bicarb on it - make sure you plaster the awkward bits).

I had a New World gas cooker with a self-cleaning oven in 1987. It worked then; I only had to change the foil on the bottom. I now have a Rangemaster thing with self cleaning ovens. They do not work and I now smear bicarb over the self cleaning bits too.

Fingeronthebutton · 26/05/2015 17:02

Most oven doors can be removed. It's a lot easier. Or, just clean it every time you use it.

FreeButtonBee · 26/05/2015 17:17

how do you stop the oven liner flapping about when the fan is on? It was fine in my old (crappy!) oven but my new one has quite a powerful breeze going on so it lifts off!

I also curse the grooved base of the new oven. Looked pretty for the first 3 days but makes cleaning a total PITA. Who thought that was a good idea a man I expect
