Irish bashing

ASAS · 25/05/2015 00:11

Is it just me or have there been an unusual number of threads passive aggressively bashing our Irish sisters lately?

I'm not Irish so not particularly sensitive, but just seems to have come up out of nowhere. Prior to this most Irish threads were about the price of tinned tomatoes in euros and staff booking St Patrick's Day in NYC without authorization.

Peace and love, remember, peace and love.

When I lived in Ireland there were loads of Women like the character in Father Ted. Ireland has progressed a great deal.

JoanHickson · 25/05/2015 01:02

There are many other patriarchal religions that those two and many outside Christianity.

crustsaway · 25/05/2015 01:03

The catholic religion is one of the most hypocritical religions in the world. Well they all are to be fair. Deal with your issues before screaming how equal you are. Again, very strange.

honeyrider · 25/05/2015 01:03

Enda Kenny has ruled out a referendum on abortion while his government are in power, Fianna Fail are a hell of a lot more conservative than Fine Gael, Labour will be tossed out in the next election so it will be some time before there's a referendum on abortion.

FastWindow · 25/05/2015 01:07

I don't disagree joan and I also feel aggrieved that people think Ireland is backwards looking. The equality vote has proven that the vast majority of people are intelligent, reasoned people.

So bunfight alert Why do these poor women keep having to travel to Brixton to quietly - and completely by themselves - terminate a pregnancy?

You cannot start a farm with two bulls, I think I saw a sign. So you will not have to travel to the UK to terminate a calf. Vote yes!

pandarific · 25/05/2015 01:10

Crustsaway: This is why no-one gives you votes in Eurovision. Wink

JoanHickson · 25/05/2015 01:13

Ireland gave one.

CrystalMcPistol · 25/05/2015 01:15

'This is not a womens rights victory'

It's a victory for the gay women of Ireland. Women like Ursula Halligan.

FastWindow · 25/05/2015 01:16

Only out of pity Grin

ComposHatComesBack · 25/05/2015 01:17

I can't claim to speak for any other non-Irish posters, but the fact that a modern, European democracy in western Europe limits the capacity of women to control their own fertility by outlawing abortions in most circumstances.

I understand the process and historical conditions that led to such a situation occurring, but it doesn't stop it being sexist, repressive and something that doesn't belong in 2015.

The fact that Ireland was prepared to votes yes to equal marriage in such overwhelming majority makes the position on abortion look even more stark and out of place.

CrystalMcPistol · 25/05/2015 01:17

Yes because all Irish people in 2015 spend their days saying novenas and quaking when they walk past a member of the clergy on the street.

FastWindow · 25/05/2015 01:18

Gay women. And gay MEN. This is not a feminist issue at all. crystal

JoanHickson · 25/05/2015 01:19

The Irish are normally more generous. Though they must have been upset with GB the year we got nil in Eurovision.

FastWindow · 25/05/2015 01:23

Not at all joan it means we are really crack hot at Eurovision and we don't want to pay to host it any more.

CrystalMcPistol · 25/05/2015 01:23

This isn't news to us. We know.

Do people think there aren't many men and women campaigning tirelessly for access to abortion in Ireland?

The passing of the marriage equality referendum is good news for everyone who envisions a more liberal Ireland. It's a step along the right path not evidence that we don't care that as it stands Irish women don't have autonomy over their own bodies.

JoanHickson · 25/05/2015 01:24

I don't think English people "get" that religion in some countries is not about "religion" the religion is the culture.

Someone more articulate, please help me out.

crustsaway · 25/05/2015 01:24

The women in Ireland have coped with such a misogynistic society for years, hence their fantastic humour. This however is not a victory, its a smoke screen. Its weird.

CrystalMcPistol · 25/05/2015 01:25

Gay women. And gay MEN.

Yes I'm aware of that thanks. But to dismiss it as having no relevance to Irish women's lives is nonsense.

JoanHickson · 25/05/2015 01:27

Fastwindow so well the English borrowed Terry, Jonny Login and Grahame.

CrystalMcPistol · 25/05/2015 01:28

Please find another phrase aside from 'its weird'. You're not really adding much.

FastWindow · 25/05/2015 01:29

Joan - if you are an Irish person, then you have religion - there is no opt out. You will confirm, you will take the pledge (though I think this has changed)

It's not religion. It's life. English don't do this, or get it.

crustsaway · 25/05/2015 01:29

I just dont understand the thinking behind this.

bumbleymummy · 25/05/2015 01:29

Jaysus. Not another one.

OP YANBU.

bumbleymummy · 25/05/2015 01:31

Load of shite FastWindow. I know plenty of Irish people who have 'opted out'.

CrystalMcPistol · 25/05/2015 01:33

I'm sorry but you're exposing your ignorance here. Plenty of people these days 'opt out'.
