To not give my daughter the antibiotics?

4yr old daughter complaining of soreness when weeing. Went to doc, checked urine sample, anti b's given. Gave them to DD, 5 days later no problems.

Just had a call from the doctor saying the sample had been sent to the lab and the type of infection DD has is resistant to the type of anti b we were prescribed and there is a new prescription waiting for us.

Daughter appears to have no symptoms anymore.

When I have a touch of cystitis or possible UTI I just drink loads of water and let it sort itself out, I am reluctant to take too many antibiotics. So I am thinking I don't need to give dd the new medicine as she doesn't appear in pain anymore.

But I'm interested if there is something I am missing or a reason I should give her the anti biotics, could she still have the infection if she has no symptoms? Should I get the medicine in case the symptoms come back?

Thanks!

i would

i'm recovering from a very nasty UTI (Resulting from a kidney stone) and i have to be dipped every week to make sure its gone as they can turn symptomless and then track back to the kidneys.

Some people need to calm down. The OP has responded eminently reasonably to advice given.

Being unnecessarily snippy/rude/aggressive to a poster for asking a question is unkind and has the potential to humiliate them, as this is a social forum. It IS embarrassing when people have a go at you.

It's dangerous because it means that person may not feel able to use this forum (an 'invaluable source of advice and support' or something) again, say if they are having a relationship breakdown or some other crisis. Also, others will see the aggressive behaviour and think 'blimey, I'm not going in there'. So more users are lost.

HTH.

Sorry but I think that asking unqualified strangers whether or not to give medicine to a small child is dangerous. I think it is irresponsible not to point that out. Saying that this is the wrong venue to ask for advice is a valid answer to the question posted - and in fact in my view the only valid and humane answer. In my profession (law) you can be struck off for giving advice while unqualified (eg as a student lawyer). I presume there's a similar rule for doctors. The reason for that is that advice from someone who seems to know what they are talking about but is not fully trained, not accountable, not insured etc is dangerous.

one one should be asking for any kind of medical advice on an internet forum - you have no idea who is answering you and what their qualifications are or they are who they pretend to be.

if you need advice on medical issues call a doctor - simple!

if the doc has left antibiotics at the door for you then yes your DD needs them, the lab have obviously tested her sample with the antibiotics they gave you and the infection hasn't gone hence the reason you will need the ones left at the door.

no one not one one.

And she was told she was being unreasonable. She hasn't been hunted down and hung from the nearest tree

She wasn't told she was being unreasonable, she was given a verbal kicking.

Completely unnecessarily given in under 20 minutes from starting the thread she was going to pick the prescription up, well before the Kickers waded in with their hobnailed boots and began berating her for daring to ask.

Theycallmemellowjello · 20/05/2015 14:30

Can I just be clear that I am not 'kicking' anyone nor am I 'berating her for daring to ask'. I am pointing out that it is necessary to seek medical advice from a doctor not strangers on an internet forum. It is not kinder not to say this.
