YANBU.

Keep going with the nitty gritty. The secret is LOADS of conditioner. Do it every other night to get rid of infestation then at least once a week to catch any new hitch hikers.

Good luck.

ItsTricky · 19/05/2015 18:10

Oh and I don't think changing beds is needed. Maybe just the pillow case and give the rest a good shake out. I only do coats if they have furry hoods. Cushions can be given a good skake off too

ItsTricky · 19/05/2015 18:11

*shake

firefly78 · 19/05/2015 18:15

thank u. last thursday she had a full on infestation so i did the lyclear. then friday night and monday night ive done conditioning and combing and am going to do it again tomorrow.

Nope, they're a pain in the arse. W/r to washing bedding, yes it's nice to do it for hygiene purposes but really not strictly necessary. Lice and their eggs require body heat and a supply of blood to survive. It's not lime fleas etc. So please don't stress yourself washing bedding daily. Nitty gritty is defo the way forward. Comb every three days or so for two weeks. Means you catch the lice (easier than getting every single egg) as they hatch but before they reach maturity (seven-ish days old) and are old enough to lay more eggs.

TheMoa · 19/05/2015 18:17

Hedrin is your friend.

Buy the 15 minute one, and the nits will be gone.

Its amazing stuff, and headlice can't become immune to it - it actually suffocates them, and destroys the eggs.

It's like a wonder drug in a bottle.

firefly78 · 19/05/2015 18:18

thank u will get hedrin tomorrow and use that. its so nloody stressful especially with a tired child!

And pp is right. Lashings of conditioner, sectioned hair, methodical combing. Closer attention to behind the ears and nape of neck. I found lyclear to be very ineffective, as an insecticide many lice are immune plus does nowt for the eggs. You may as well stick to combing or try an overnight solution containing dimethicone(?) which stops them respiring properly and makes their internal organs 'splode. Grin But still, does fuck all for the eggs.

Nabuma · 19/05/2015 18:21

Yy to Hedrin, forgot the name!

SweepTheHalls · 19/05/2015 18:25

Having got rid of them I heartily them recommend the nitty gritty preventer spray. Have got finally got clear of the buggers a couple of months ago I've used it on my kids hair every morning as they head out to school. Plenty of slips in book bags saying more nits in the class, but fingers crossed none on my DS's hair since we've been using it.

firefly78 · 19/05/2015 20:27

ive been using tea tree oil spray on her hair as a preventable measure! god its stressful and time consuming!

Ds was 15 yesterday and got an extra pressie - his first ever infestation of headlice. Luckily I still had the remainder of a bottle of Boots own brand lice remover from when dd was small so I used that as it's a leave-in product (bloody marvellous it was and only used to cost a fiver, am gutted they don't do it any more). Now it's run out what can I use? My problem is ds is autistic and I have to use no-rinse shampoo on him as there is no way he will let me wash his hair properly. I went to three chemists yesterday and could only find products that you have to shampoo out. I ended up buying some leave-in conditioner and some tea-tree oil to mix together. Do you think that will work? I have since read on the internet that you can kill them with Listerine. Has anyone tried that?

I have spent all day washing bedding, towels, dressing gowns, the lot. Please don't tell me I needn't have bothered!

ravenAK · 19/05/2015 21:16

Listerine (citrus, from Poundland) seems to discourage 'em a bit - I douse my dds in it every couple of weeks, then follow up with conditioner/Nitty Gritty.

No good whatsoever for a fullblown infestation though (they were both absolutely hooching at the end of term) - for that you need the greasy Hedrin stuff that suffocates them, & takes a full bottle of cheap shampoo to scrub out.

No good for dc with sensory issues, Pixel - my dd1 freaks out completely Sad. But it seems to be the only way if you let the damn things get a proper foothold. I just try to be vigilant with the combing...which dd1 also loathes, but less than the Hedrin.

Pixel · 19/05/2015 21:33

Of course Poldark just dunked Demelza's head in the water trough to get rid of the 'crawlers' Grin.

Pixel · 19/05/2015 21:34

Raven I'm surprised ds let me comb his hair, he never used to so I suppose we've made some progress!

cleanmyhouse · 19/05/2015 22:03

I feel ya.

Have spent the last 3 weeks doing hedrin, olive oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil, 400 bottles of conditioner, nitty gritty, fairy liquid to get the bastsrding hedrin out, hair tied up or plaited because it looked so greasy. I'm now just waiting for a week clear so i can go and get a hair cut because my once lucious waist length thick, curly hair looks like straw.

My scalp is in tatters because i get a particularly bad reaction to them.

I though since i now have teenagers, we were past this shit. I was wrong. Back to weekly checks.

Fucking lice bastards.

hettie · 19/05/2015 22:15

Sympathies, they are the spawn of Satan.... Bloody dc's always share the love too. My once thick hair is now considerably thinner from numerous treatments and combing since we started nursery school/primary. The life cycle requires combing every 3 days for several weeks..

Harrietsferrets · 19/05/2015 22:43

I've done conditioner, hedrin, lyclear, tea tree, neem, coconut oil, mayonnaise, nitty gritty comb, plastic comb, cider vinegar, metal comb, full marks, listerine, hairspray on tied back hair, mayonnaise. It was suggested so Ive tried it. Having two girls with waist length hair the combing takes all day if they get an attack. Now I have a Robicomb. It's used on dry hair. They get conditioned once a week and Robicombed daily.

The only one I drew the line at was vodka.

There is one child whose mother can't be bothered to treat at school so it's a constant war.

TheMoa · 20/05/2015 07:41

Pixel one of mine has AS, and long hair Sad. I explained about the hair bugs, and we agreed to use Hedrin to zap them, and brushing with a wet/shampoo soaked brush to remove the stuff.

It isn't terribly effective at removing Hedrin, but after a few days of twice a day wet brushing, their hair was looking passable in public Grin.

Their desire to get rid of the bugs over-rode their dislike of water, the 15 minute stuff will at least kill the lice & eggs, even if it leaves them looking as though they haven't washed their hair in two months!

firefly78 · 20/05/2015 10:46

im going to buy hedrin but shes a bridesmaid on sunday. is it going to look really greasy!!

OP posts:
budgiegirl · 20/05/2015 10:55

Sometimes the problem is that people just treat the lice once, and think that should work. It doesn't, because although you have killed the live lice, you haven't killed the eggs, which hatch and 7-10 days later can lay new eggs. So you have to do the treatment 2 to 3 times, a week apart, to make sure all the lice from the newly hatched eggs will be killed before they can grow.

Very often people assume their kids have picked up a new infestation from someone else, but it's often just the same infestation re-establishing itself.

I wish it was like on Poldark !

capercaillie · 20/05/2015 10:58

I used hedrin on my daughter this week - it took 2 goes to shampoo it out but her hair looks normal and not greasy.

DialMforMummy · 20/05/2015 11:04

I have eradicated the fuckers with tea tree oil mixed with shampoo, combing with loads of conditioner and coconut oil overnight prior to washing. Did that for 10 days before I was nits free. I also put some DEET on my kids hair when they had live ones and it did kill them.

Pixel - if you can't use a product on your son, then just comb, comb and more combing ! Get a decent lice comb (metal not plastic) and then comb his hair until you are not getting any more lice out. You can do it on dry hair, no need for conditioner. Do this every day for three weeks. It's a bit time consuming, but it does work. It's easier on short hair, ie it worked for my sons who had short to mid length hair, but not for my daughter who had waist length hair as it was too easy to miss a louse!
