it's normal to get upset about a fictional rape of a young woman right

Was watching a certain fantasy TV show last night where it is obviously fictitious but still I couldn't help but start crying when a young woman was raped in it.

DH couldn't understand it at all kept telling me its just make believe, that i obviously know. I've never been a victim of SA but still, I felt so upset even though I know its not real as I'm sure the same has happened in real life for many.

I'm totally normal right?

I agree re the violence dragon. I'd guess the difference is the amount of women in RL who have been raped, versus the amount of men who have been flayed and de-penised

Did geofry really make the one girl rape the other with that big stick?

I thought that's what was going to happen but kind of relived when I thought she was just hit with it.

I think having an emotional response to a work of fiction is sort of the point of art. I haven't seen Game of Thrones, but I would imagine a scene involving rape would be quite emotionally charged.

However, I do think that there is a difference between a tear or two and loud, dramatic, look-at-me sobbing.

'Where are the 100s of thread/comments on facebook about the needless violence to Theon?'

Arguably essential to the story and didn't feel crow barred in so we could have a look at his penis. GoT is a violent series, I accept that.

I'm not even against rape being used as part of a story line, as a device to show inequality and if done correctly they can open discussion on rape which I think is much needed. I felt the Rob Roy scene was hard to watch, however as it didn't feel like it had been done so the viewers could see some nakedness/sex I have no problem with it other than it makes me uncomfortable, which it should.

Just to add

'Arguably essential to the story and didn't feel crow barred in so we could have a look at his penis'

I'm not that far in the books yet so stand to be corrected.

GoT and loads of other stuff on TV (eg serial killer stuff) is full of gratuitous female nudity and sexual violence, almost always towards women, so I don't watch it.

Thanks for that - I suppose I was questioning the need for the TV execs to insert gratuitous violence (be that sexual or not) into a dramatisation of a book.
I know things need changing from page to screen but usually don't understand why apart from to conform to apparently what appeals.
