Look at the girls school trouser lengths on this link

Not only do they not offer a variety of leg lengths for taller and shorter girls, they appear to think children don't grow after the age of 14!

My dd has been 5'7" + since she was 13 years old. A pair of 29.5" inside leg trousers look like clown trousers on her.

She is now 14 and 5'8" to 5'9". Does anyone know where I can buy some school uniform trousers for her please Flowers?

Why not just buy ladies black trousers?

TheMoa · 19/05/2015 09:11

I'd imagine that most girls of 14 shop in the women's clothes departments.

Just buy any old trousers in the right colour.

Mintyy · 19/05/2015 09:11

Well, the cost is a consideration.

I think from being about 13 I just got ladies trousers! (I'm also 5ft 8in). Much nicer fit.

I get blank trousers for work for £6 from asda. They don't need to be expensive

Mintyy · 19/05/2015 09:13

M & S are missing a trick here then.

Dd's trousers actually have to be navy blue, but ok I will look.

DD (15, but only 162cm) has an inside leg of 32, and has those trousers in age 14, I think, long length. She's a size 6/8.

I think it is just that really annoying time of year when M&S is out of stock of lots of uniform.

We started off in Next adults last time we were looking, the cut just didn't work for her as well as the M&S ones. Have you tried H&M? I've never bought school trousers there, but they are great for long leg things.

TheMoa · 19/05/2015 09:14

Supermarkets are very cheap, so are places like New Look and Primark, and they all do work/school type trousers.

IdStillRatherBeKnitting · 19/05/2015 09:36

DD1 is 12 and 5'4" (still growing fast). I bailed and bought her adult trousers from New Look, think they were £9 a pair.

They're wearing really well, and have almost done the school year. She's also in adult shoes and wears a 32E bra. I despair!

Feminine · 19/05/2015 09:38

I've found Next really great for my teenage boy.
He is 5'11 and l buy him the trousers for larger boys, and he wears them on his hips! Grin
For my youngest two, l have the quality very good too.

WishUponAStar88 · 19/05/2015 09:42

Primark do fairly decent blue ladies trousers pretty cheaply :)

WeirdCatLady · 19/05/2015 09:56

Next do a longer length range.

Slightly off topic but asdas george sometimes do longer length pyjama bottoms online.

Collaborate · 19/05/2015 10:08

Only my son is old enough to be at a crossover between adult and kids clothes, but there is a huge difference in the shape. He has a very slim waist but long legs. Getting trousers long enough that don't make him look like he's at a photoshoot for slimmer of the year is rather hard.

TheFairyCaravan · 19/05/2015 10:14

It's obviously done to force people into the ladies' dept. Their standard ladies' length is 31" inches and petite is 29".

It was a nightmare when my boys were at school, they've got a 34" inside leg. DH's is 36", God knows how MIL managed!

Mintyy · 19/05/2015 10:46

Agree FairyCaravan. Don't they know that the population is getting taller?

I resent having to pay VAT on clothes for my dc, just on principle.

florentina1 · 19/05/2015 11:36

I agree, everything has to be tried on because it varies so much. I am only 5ft, and bought their short trousers for years. Now they are too short and I have to buy medium and take up about 2 inches.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 19/05/2015 12:07

Aside from the leg lengths being absurd - does anyone else think all the other sizing is off too?

So at 13 you reach your maximum height of 5' 4 1/2" with a chest of 34 1/4" (I'm still not there at 27...) and from then on you stay the same height but go up to 39" chest!

Now I'm small chested but for an average back size of 32 inches this would be a 32G which can't be standard, can it? Of course M&S would try to sell you a 36D because they're equally shit at bras.

ItsTricky · 19/05/2015 12:59

My daughter had proper womanly curves from age 13 so 'school wear' was useless. We found Matalan work wear section really good, they have trousers with a bit of stretch.

BagelwithButter · 19/05/2015 13:37

Look at these

I gave up on M&S and most other high street shops about 2 years ago. They just didn't do anything that fit for my daughter who is now 15 1/2.

These fit really well on tall, slim girls, wash very well, dry very quickly and are cheap! Don't know if they do navy blue but they might! Good luck

Mintyy · 19/05/2015 13:41

Unfortunately I can't bring myself to buy trousers for my dd from a shop called Miss Sexies, but thanks for the link anyway.

Ilisten2thesoundofdrums · 19/05/2015 13:46

I share your pain!
DD is 12 and 5'5" and a size 10 trousers but i'd rather not have to pay the VAT. However its really school skirts that are a problem. she has to have navy A- line or pleated skirts which must be knee length. She is currently wearing age 15 John lewis skirts with the elastic very well pulled in on the waistband as we can't actually find anything else long enough that is suitable and won't break the bank

As for DS who is 5'11" and has a 34 inside leg and a 28" waist - well all I can say is he better not get any taller as the I can't find any longer mens black trousers with a small enough waist if he does - his waist will need to get 4" bigger overnight!

DeidreChambersWhatACoincidence · 19/05/2015 13:54

I have this problem for my tall teens. Ds and dd both nearly 6ft. But larger sizes get wider too - they're slim and don't need the width. Also we must have grey which are hard to find. I can never understand why.

ouryve · 19/05/2015 13:54

IIRC, there already is VAT charged on many older kids' clothes on the premise that small adults could wear them.

I'm glad DS1 isn't needing school uniform any more, as he currently has 29" inside leg and only 24" waist. He's only 11! Joggers that don't fall down just about reach the top of his boots. For jeans, we get turn up skinnies from Next and turn them down again!
