AIBU to be fed up with smear test threads?

PatsyNoPasta · 18/05/2015 19:43

There seems to have been a run of smear test threads recently, encouraging women to get one done.

I'm sure we all know all about them. Can we drop the subject?

Thank you.

Ooh, are you trying to start a ruck to publicise getting smear tests?

NRomanoff · 18/05/2015 19:46

YABU. You don't have to click on them and there is still an issue with women not going for them.

People can post what they want, you don't have to read it.

Idefix · 18/05/2015 19:47

Why? Or is it what Linerunner says :)

They're promoting something that could potentially save lives, I'd much rather see repeated Smear threads than pissing election or royal baby threads

Justmuddlingalong · 18/05/2015 19:50

Nope, I don't think we can or should drop the subject. Many Mnetters are women, many are busy, many keep putting it off. Many are overdue a smear test and some might be grateful for the nudge to book in for one.

PatsyNoPasta · 18/05/2015 19:51

If a woman wishes to screen, she knows what to do.

I'd rather see 100 smear reminder threads than ONE from someone saying they have just been diagnosed with cervical cancer.

If you don't like a thread, don't read it!

RevoltingPeasant · 18/05/2015 19:52

YANBU YANBU YANBU!

Threads "encouraging" women to make other health related choices would be roundly slammed.

Can you imagine?

"AIBU to remind you all to eat less cake? Obesity kills, please ladies :("

"Please stop smoking now. My lovely friend has lung cancer. Think of your children!"

This guilt tripping would not be tolerated!

Imachocolateportal · 18/05/2015 19:53

Yabu. You don't have to read them. Earlier one made me work out when my last one was and realise that they hadn't invited me when due, probably as I had forgotten to update my address with the doctor. So I will be booking one in when I go to see the nurse for something else tomorrow!

PatsyNoPasta · 18/05/2015 19:53

Women multi-task. They manage careers, family and everything else. Do you think that if woman wanted a test she would get one? Women that choose not to screen don't want the test.

Nee naw, nee naw.

AIBU to be fed up with smear test threads?
OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 18/05/2015 19:54

Well, lots of people know what to do in lots of situations, doesn't mean those things shouldn't be talked about Confused

What an odd thread.

PatsyNoPasta · 18/05/2015 19:55

I had mine today. I was nervous, as usual, but it was fine, as usual. I also gave some blood for BRCA testing, which I will get the results for in 10 days. I'm pretty nervous about that.

TenerifeSea · 18/05/2015 19:58

You're asking people to stop posting on a topic. It's not up to you. Just ignore if you're not interested.

SaucyJack · 18/05/2015 20:00

It'll never happen. Intake of the cervical screening programme relies on mass hysteria and peer pressure to keep the numbers up. Very few would bother if they went by statistics alone.

Those who do participate feel the need to judge those who don't, because they don't like to admit to themselves that it was more than likely a massive waste of time and they should've gone to the pub
instead.

Sheeples.

TheFairyCaravan · 18/05/2015 20:02

You're that fed up with them that you started another! Hmm

Perhaps try hiding them in future.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 18/05/2015 20:03

Women that choose not to screen don't want the test

I disagree. In my case it was just very easy as a mum of 3 and rushed off my feet to delay making the appointment till it was more convenient, then it was cancelled because of one the kids was ill. Then again because one of them had a run of hospital appointments while undergoing a diagnosis and before you know it, I am almost a year overdue. I'm not good at putting myself first. I need the "nagging".

I don't think anyone except those with a very difficult history in terms of abuse or huge hang ups about intimacy, would actually CHOOSE not to be tested. Most people just put it off, when they shouldn't.

I don't think you can liken it to eating too much cake!

Justmuddlingalong · 18/05/2015 20:04

More than likely a waste of time. Possibly, but that's 10 minutes of my time I'm prepared to waste, thankyouverymuch.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 18/05/2015 20:07

what else should we not post about OP?

should we not remind people to check their smoke alarm batteries? Just in case it upsets people who have had a housefire and who regret not checking their alarms or worse still, who have lost a loved one in a fire? or Just in case it makes people feel like they are being called stupid or irresponsible?

reminders are good!

hotdogsandmustard · 18/05/2015 20:07

So , the posts have reminded one user on here that hers is due

Well done whoever posted them

Why is it annoying you ?

Justusemyname · 18/05/2015 20:08

Hugely missing the point. Are you missing some brain cells?

Not everyone will know about smear tests. A single thread could save many lives. Threads might encourage someone who is nervous to go ahead, especially someone who has had a smear who can tell the worried poster it is over very quickly and not as bad as they might be imagining.

RevoltingPeasant · 18/05/2015 20:09

Okay I won't keep posting on this as I pretty much killed the other thread!

No desire to be a one woman whing campaign.

But phant it's exactly like that. I won't re post the stats I posted on the other thread but suffice to say you are much, MUCH more likely to die from Alzheimer's or cardiovascular diseases (both impacted by diet) than cervical cancer. There were fewer than 1000 deaths from cervical cancer in the latest lot of stats available and the screening prog has coincided with a 21% decline in cervical cancer deaths. Even if you attribute all that decline solely to the programme the numbers are not that big.

On the other hand, how many people die of obesity related illnesses or ones closely related to bad diet? It's a real comparison! Stuffing your face with crap and smoking are much worse for you than missing smears.
