Brie related accident

Stoneysilence · 18/05/2015 18:12

Dd (2) and I (8 weeks pg with number 2) just spent a very convivial half hour tucking into a plate of Brie. So far so yummy.

Then I remembered Brie is a banned substance in pregnancy.

Then I checked the use by date on the label (thinking about bacteria...) and it says 11th May! Shock

What will happen?!! AIBU to think fook it, it was delicious anyway?

You'll be fine, I don't think soft cheeses are banned in France and French women manage to have babies all the time.

I think the worst thing that can happen has already happened... You've not got any brie left. Wink

LurkingQuietly · 18/05/2015 18:19

Um, is Brie banned? I'm halfway through my second pregnancy and haven't eased off at all. Whoops! You'll be fine.

Stoneysilence · 18/05/2015 18:22

Yes I thought it was banned on the nhs site? If not I'll really let rip, I've been craving it for ages. What of the aged sell by date though? Cheese never goes off, right...?! (I cut the raw edges off before serving anyway)

God I love Brie

Hi op, I was first pregnant in 1989 and last upduffed in 2000.

Seriously the amount of bollocks and crap spouted at pregnant women is mind blowing

You will he fine ignore and stop worrying.

And one Wine won't hurt you either! Grin

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 18/05/2015 18:24

I eat it because the risk (a few hundred listeria cases out of 64 million UK population) is acceptable to me personally, but each to their own. You can actually get listeria from any food as well, the last outbreak I read about in the press was lettuce!

ChatEnOeuf · 18/05/2015 18:25

Your risk was listeria. Can't change that now, so just remember it in all its deliciousness Wine

JemFinch · 18/05/2015 18:27

Isn't only unpasteurised Brie a risk? Pretty much all supermarket cheese is pasteurised so unless it was a lovely gooey cottage industry type cheese you'll be fine.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 18/05/2015 18:27

Meh. You'll be fine. I was PG three times before they decided that unpasteurised stuff was banned and I drank wine as well (not excessively but fairly often.)

Loads of people don't even realise they are PG for months and carry on as normal smoking and binge drinking and all sorts. A bit of Brie won't hurt, in 99.999% of pregnancies.

CaTsMaMmA · 18/05/2015 18:27

are you pregnant people allowed to eat anything these days

my baby is 18 this year and they were just about tutting that liver in large quantities might be a less than good idea, but other than that and the not binge drinking we were left to our own devices really

Enjoy your brie and don't worry

LavenderRain · 18/05/2015 18:32

I was taking the pill, downing pints
classy aswell as eating camembert, pate and sushi when I was 4 months pregnant and totally unaware I had a baby growing inside me Hmm
DS is 100% fine!

Stoneysilence · 18/05/2015 18:38

Hurray! Thanks for all the replies. Brie is food of the gods!

I must admit to opening the thread as I couldn't imagine what kind of accident Brie could possibly cause. Grin

ChaiseLounger · 18/05/2015 18:48

Me too Luis!

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 18/05/2015 18:55

Nothing is 'banned'. Certain foods have guidelines to avoid but come on- banned? OP you will be fine

I'm pregnant with my fourth. The rules have changed every single time (and my first isn't quite seven yet). I take it all with a pinch of salt, unless they can give me a really sound reason for it. I have occasional brie or camembert. The odd half glass of wine, but I stay away from the shark and marlin (which I have never so much as tasted in my life anyway!).

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat · 18/05/2015 19:33

There's a lot of pregnant scaremongering isn't there? I've got a friend who was horrified I was going to eat sour cream last week - it's pasteurised so I couldn't understand the panic?? I'm sure Brie in moderation is fine!

Stinkersmum · 18/05/2015 19:38

The only things I've cut down on is caffeine. I've only had one glass of wine since funding out I'm pregnant and I've not eaten liver. But rare steak, blue cheese, peanuts etc etc? Bring it on.

londonrach · 18/05/2015 19:43

Enjoy. Yesterday was cold so dh and i enjoyed a baked gooey camembert with some tiger bread. We are ttc so hummed and arred then remembered the french... Dont worry about it.

Anydrinkwilldo · 18/05/2015 19:47

jubles I'm on number 3 in 3 years and the guidelines have changed each time!
I get protecting the unborn etc but I wouldn't stress to much. As pp says most cheese is pasteurised in supermarkets so unless you bought it from farm supplier etc you're at low risk. I still eat my tuna, drink the odd glass of wine, have my coffee etc my first two are fine Grin

LuisSuarezTeeth · 18/05/2015 19:48

A brie-related accident. Grin

Ragwort · 18/05/2015 19:51

I take it all with a pinch of salt - I hope that is a very small pinch of salt as you know salt isn't good for you. Grin.

There is so much rubbish aimed at pregnant women to make them feel guilty - I drank wine (moderately) and guzzled strong coffee, ate lots of cheese, rare meat etc etc throughout my pregnancy.

Enjoy Smile.

Luckystar82 · 18/05/2015 19:59

I don't think there are any recorded cases of brie-related listeria in the UK so don't worry...

I went out to a posh restaurant yesterday and enjoyed smoked salmon, crab and deli ham. I did avoid the pates though!

LuisSuarezTeeth · 18/05/2015 20:02

Brie-related hysteria, maybe...

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 18/05/2015 20:03
