To hate it when a cashier puts the receipt/notes into your hand before the coins?

Whats the point of that? You then have coins sliding around on top of a piece of paper in your hand, which makes it take longer to put it away in your purse, whilst the cashier sits there impatiently waiting for you to leave.

I have worked a till before and I always gave the customer the coins first. Nobody ever seemed unhappy with this, in fact one woman thanked me for not shoving the coins on top of her notes.

Its very rare (at least where I live) for a cashier to give the coins first. Are they being trained to give the notes/receipt first?

Am I BU, or does this annoy anyone else?

We do it because we secretly hate all customers for the pettyminded fusspots they are and love to see you suffer.

goldopals · 17/05/2015 02:09

I prefer it that way as it is easier for me to slide coins in the department and then the notes away. That is how I gave out change at Maccas. We used to have more people whinge about giving change the other way

kali110 · 17/05/2015 02:30

Notes first then coins. Show the customer the notes so they can't say they never got them. Plus its neater and quicker.
I prefer this way too.

KoalaDownUnder · 17/05/2015 15:52

Not all small businesses take debit cards?

Just a wild guess. Hmm

Aermingers · 17/05/2015 15:54

I prefer it. Means the notes are safer and weighed down. Not that worried about losing 20p or a £1 but can't afford to lose a tenner. Think it's a very petty thing to be annoyed about anyway. YABU.

OMG another thing to slag us minimum wage retail staff, honesty do you think we should sit there and put coins /notes in the preferred order of people who have nothing better to do with with their lives, seriously I give notes and then coins if it slides round in your hand close your bloody handy or swap it round yourself.

Lara2 · 17/05/2015 17:50

YANBU - coins first then notes is so much easier. Alternatively, try the way I used to get my change when I lived in Spain: notes in my hand and the coins thrown randomly down the supermarket packing belt! Grin

spiralbound · 17/05/2015 18:02

YANBU, and I used to work in a shop 15 years a while ago, and I never did it.

This is a good tip for any of us troubled by the way we've been given change: place other hand on top of change-holding hand, invert.

One hands both free, reach for grip.

BeautyQueenFromMars · 17/05/2015 18:20

YABU. Just put the coins away first, instead of the notes. It really doesn't make any difference, honestly.

Debinaround · 17/05/2015 18:36

Most of the people I work with give the notes first so they don't have to touch customers sweaty, dirty hands. Wink

UsedtobeFeckless · 17/05/2015 19:07

If you work behind a till you can't fucking win, people are offended if you ...

Chat / Don't chat
Do / Don't offer them a bag
Hand them a reciept / Put it in the bag
Give them the change first, then the notes / Notes first, then the change

Really - talk about petty. Get peeved about something that actually matters.

spiralbound · 18/05/2015 00:28

You can give coins without having notes to put them on, without touching people's hands. The trick is to let the coins slip in a controlled way into their hand from a slight height, not to try to put a handful all in at once. God knows I'm fussy enough about unnecessary intimacy between customer and casher Wink (see below) but I managed it.

Two things irritate me that are always being done to me yet I somehow managed never to do when I was a cashier - having a load of coins piled on top of a note, and cashiers who lick their fingers to open bags. Of course when I was a cashier, there were probably ten times as many things that irritated me about customers Grin, but that doesn't stop me having a view on how it works from the customer side too.

FretYeNotAllIsShiny · 18/05/2015 17:32

Someone thanked me today for giving them their notes separate to their coins, I almost asked if she was a mumsnetter!

Nanny0gg · 19/05/2015 22:28

Going back to the dark ages, when cashiers had to work out your change, it would be counted into your hand. Therefore coins first, notes last.

Volleyhang · 19/05/2015 22:34

YANBU

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/05/2015 22:59

Yes, I had a job where you had to count back change, I remember it really throwing us all when 20p coins were introduced.

lunalelle · 20/05/2015 04:06

Agreed, Feckless. It does appear that retail workers can do very little to please for their heady wage.

One good reason for notes first is that we have cctv above the till, so when someone inevitably pays for something costing £1.49 with a £20 note, they cannot then claim we did not give the correct change, and we cannot get blamed if the till is short. I hand out the notes first in plain view, then the coins.
