AIBU to think this was NOT a ploughmans lunch?

I was chatting to my sister on the phone yesterday when she mentioned she had made her kids a ploughman's lunch and they had really enjoyed it.

One of her kids is a bit of a fussy eater so I asked if he had eaten all of it, including the apple; this is when she admitted there was no apple in the ploughman's! Confused

When I asked what was in it she listed: cheese, ham, lettuce, coleslaw, bread and pickle. No meat knocker!!!

AIBU to think a ploughman's lunch without apple and meat knocker is not actually a ploughman's lunch at all?

Back in the day, in Neighbours, Madge Bishop's netball team was called "The Grey Growlers". I thought this referred to their overall feistiness. Now I'm not so sure...

I fucking love MN!

How many things can a person learn in five minutes outside of the classroom?!!! I can't believe I actually watched that clip on how long eggs are made but I'm so glad I did. I'm going to live forever with the memory of that chicken...

Oh, and Selks, loads of posters have mentioned pickled onions!!

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 15/05/2015 23:07

I too found the video of long eggs fascinating. I especially liked the bit where they re-created the process in their own little jug, it made the whole process so much more scientific. I agree the German commentary only added to the viewing excitement. Who could fail to be entertained by German-speaking sciencey bloke talking about eggs? He did slag off the bamboo version a bit at the end though, the eggs where not as neat as the factory ones. I personally thought that was a bit of a low comment. I am off to watch the boil an egg in a potato video now.

Does anyone know a ploughman?

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/05/2015 23:08

They probably prefer a korma these days.

Yellowbird54321 · 15/05/2015 23:10

Phew, thank you piggy I knew it couldn't be just me Grin
Selks it's ok, pickled onions have already been mentioned and verified by some as part of a proper ploughman's.

Have any Scottish MNers been in to discuss eating their piece, yet?

Selks · 15/05/2015 23:14

Oops...I appear to have pickled onion blindness!

Selks · 15/05/2015 23:15

(Has anyone mentioned pickled eggs? Grin)

OscarWinningActress · 15/05/2015 23:17

There can't be ham! It would go slimy before a ploughman got around to eating it.

ElizabetaTorres · 15/05/2015 23:18

I'm now imagining the Gala Pie Long Egg Displacement Method of tackle measurement. Remove both ends of pie first, obviously.

msgrinch · 15/05/2015 23:22

um creasing at this thread Grin

Momagain1 · 15/05/2015 23:26

ourye nope. Though I was thinking that was a very Glasgow thing. And the city definitely won't have had ploughmen.

MrsWembley · 17/05/2015 19:43

Ooh, Selks, pickled eggs! But the only place for a pickled egg is next to a bag of salt and vinegar crisps, on a bar and accompanied by a pint of best.

loveareadingthanks · 17/05/2015 20:06

in the 70s the bread was always a cottage loaf. I used to love them. Haven't seen them for years.

AIBU to think this was NOT a ploughmans lunch?
DrFoxtrot · 17/05/2015 20:52

Our local bakery does cottage loaves, I love them once in a while (IBS permitting).

Selks · 17/05/2015 21:56

Ooh cottage loaves! Love them. Also haven't seen one for years. Are they still around?

FryOneFatManic · 17/05/2015 22:21

I can't stand Branstons pickle, it's utter crap. I've had some fantastic pickles and chutneys that would blow Branstons out of the water, some of which have been home made. Had a fantastic one yesterday, with a ploughman's Grin. A tangy ginger one.

I've never heard the terms meat knocker or squealer used for pork pies before, and I also come from the home of pork pies.

Any fellow insomniacs recall those ads for eggs on a stick? A tube of egg rises unattractively out of a machine called a rollie. Looks as foul as this makes it sound. (Those ads are on at like 3am, just when you are your weakest and these things start to look like a good idea).
