AIBU to think this was NOT a ploughmans lunch?

I was chatting to my sister on the phone yesterday when she mentioned she had made her kids a ploughman's lunch and they had really enjoyed it.

One of her kids is a bit of a fussy eater so I asked if he had eaten all of it, including the apple; this is when she admitted there was no apple in the ploughman's!

When I asked what was in it she listed: cheese, ham, lettuce, coleslaw, bread and pickle. No meat knocker!!!

AIBU to think a ploughman's lunch without apple and meat knocker is not actually a ploughman's lunch at all?

I have friends and relatives all over the UK and I have never, ever heard of a pork pie being called a meat knocker. Ever.

I have never heard meat knocker here (Cumbria) but I can assure you that after learning this new word I shall forever call pork pies 'meat knockers'!

That is what I have often been given as a ploughman's in a pub before. IMo it is a version of a ploughman's lunch. I have never been given pork pie as part of a ploughman's lunch before though.

And I have never heard of the term "meat knocker" - I'm from South London and have lived in West and South Yorkshire.

I made myself a ploughperson's lunch today.

It consisted of a pork pie, some cheese, some pickle, tomatoes, bread and butter and a pear cos I don't like apples.

Although not strictly all the correct ingredients, I think any meal which includes bread and cheese, but not sandwiched together as that's a sandwich , along with some other random picnicky items, can be called a ploughmans.

Never heard of Meat Knocker, but googling it lead me to: www.knockerscrust.com/ which DH thinks is hilarious as it has a section on how to cook your knockers.

My husband, loves a Ploughman's. He considers the cheese, bread and salad essential. Nothing else. His Great granddad was a ploghman. I polish the silver ploughing trophies he won every few months. Does this add any weight to my DH definition?

That said, I am sure that pork pie would be a lovely addition to a ploughman's lunch, and an apple would do no harm in his opinion.

I once spent ages van dyke-ing some radishes for someones wedding breakfast. Nice to know what it's actually called!
DH had a gizmo that would do the same thing to eggs, but I got rid of it as the damn thing freaked me out!

I have been teaching Piers fucking Plowman all morning.

I can tell you that a canonical ploughman's is two fresh cheeses, curds and cream and oatcake, and parsley and leeks and greens. Oh, and veggie bean bake for the children.

Mr Wiki confirms it was the Milk Marketing Board who promoted it in the UK in the 1960s. I'm old enough to remember that this was the first pub grub served in most pubs.

I am told it was a marketing wheeze in the pub trade to rebrand the Navvy's Lunch as a Ploughman's to make it seem bucolic and move it upmarket.
