Is this really geeky and weird or totally normal?

Whenever we have a couple of sets of friends over for supper (about once a week0, we end up playing board games after a few glasses of wine.

Usually:
Catan
Bananagrams
Cranium
Cards Against Humanity (if the 4 bottle of wine barrier is broken)

I told my other friend about this and she thinks it's a weird thing for adults to do and like a kind of geeky-wifeswap activity Confused. I just find that I enjoy doing something other than talking about kids and work.

So do you do this too? And what games do you play?

We love playing table top games here, card and board :)
Love watching TableTop on YouTube too.

We have Carcasonne,
Pandemic (love),
Ticket To Ride (Love, but better with more than 2 players. The Eurpoe version is supposed to be great),
Marvel's Legendary (deck building, but cooperative),
Star Fluxx (cards, very fun. I usually lose!),
King of Tokyo (lots of fun. Our 5-year old can play too now, with assistance!),
Dice Masters is ok,
Wrath of Ashardalon (D&D based, but ok to play),
Munchkin is good. Lots of expansions, definitely 3+ players.
Drakon is good.

My husband has a few more that I am less interested in. Send him off to play with his mates every so often!

Games and wine is a great combination. Smart Ass is a great game. I love Boggle, but DH hates it. Pictionary is always good after a few drinks.

Pennies · 15/05/2015 19:53

Monopoly Empire is excellent. It is much much quicker than normal Monopoly and you can be enjoyable ruthless towards your fellow players.

fourchetteoff · 15/05/2015 20:05

Read all of these posts and certainly noted down all the games, such as Carcasonne and Monopoly Empire (anything to make that not last 5 hours!!)

Love Lego Creationary too. (with kids)
We also love a very simple card game called Rat-a-tat-cat which we play with the kids which feels a bit like Junior poker!

Ticket to Ride has been mentioned a few times now, so will get.

Thanks for these!

Your friend is missing out!

We like Ex Libris here.

scissy · 15/05/2015 20:15

Pandemic and Ticket to Ride (europe) work well with 2 players. Personally i find the europe edition of TTR more interesting than the original. Also lost cities works well with 2 and is one kids could probably cope with as well. My favourite games are Small World and Agricola but we don't get to play as often due to toddler DC Sad.

clearsommespace · 15/05/2015 20:17

Ticket to ride Switzerland works well with 2 players. Possibly an extension rather than full game.
I recommend Istanbul.

CrapBag · 15/05/2015 21:38

I love playing games. Used to do it with an old, do group of friends but I'm not sure if my newer friends are game people. Can't wait until the DCs are old enough for monopoly, game of life, uno etc.

2rebecca · 15/05/2015 21:41

I love them and miss my son at uni as husband and daughter not interested. Risk anyone?

Alexandpea · 15/05/2015 21:43

We love Articulate here Smile

pourmeanotherglass · 15/05/2015 21:44

Surprised no-one has mentioned Balderdash yet, it's great after a few drinks.

ImCatbug · 15/05/2015 21:46

Another vote for Munchkin here! Both our families love board games, DH's family is for serious hardcore board games and mine is for drunken stupid fun games like CAH.

flora717 · 15/05/2015 21:57

I have every Steve Jackson game I think. I recomend Dixit (the modern image interpretation game, not knock off scrabble of old).
Settlers is a staple for a reason.
Where is Moldova? has gone down fantastically well with my DC's & Apples to Apples (UK version).
The DrWho extras for cards Against humanity (uk version) is great.
I played Timeline the other day, a handy quick game and ver dc friendly.

2rebecca · 15/05/2015 22:16

Warhammer was a board game too far though. Loved making and painting the figures, bored rigid by the game. Magic is OK though, until it gets serious and you lose because you aren't willing to spend a small fortune on the cards

excitedbutsick · 16/05/2015 00:08

I also second votes for cards against humanity, Dixit, Ticket to Ride and Small World. We also have every single Munchkin release. Other good games are Puerto Rico and Werewolf. Werewolf you need a fairly big group to play in the first place but is totally amazing with 15+ players.

Magic the Gathering is referred to as cardboard crack here, as it gets ridiculously expensive very fast keeping up with the newer cards and being able to have a competitive playable deck.

DuchessofBuffonia · 16/05/2015 07:45

I love board and card games! It's not always easy to find the right people to play with though. I'm quite competitive in games (as are my siblings) and people who don't play to win annoy me somewhat.

Our favourite games are:

  • Rummikub (fast-paced tile game)
  • Let's Buy Hollywood
  • 221b Baker Street
  • Ratrace (our set is very dated now, but still great fun)
  • The Dickens Game

We also enjoy:

  • Monopoly
  • Pay Day
  • The Trotters Game
