Is this really geeky and weird or totally normal?

Whenever we have a couple of sets of friends over for supper (about once a week0, we end up playing board games after a few glasses of wine.

Usually:
Catan
Bananagrams
Cranium
Cards Against Humanity (if the 4 bottle of wine barrier is broken)

I told my other friend about this and she thinks it's a weird thing for adults to do and like a kind of geeky-wifeswap activity Confused. I just find that I enjoy doing something other than talking about kids and work.

So do you do this too? And what games do you play?

No, they're great fun and a real break from 'normal life'.

Your friend sounds a bit mean TBH.

maamalady · 15/05/2015 16:15

Board games are good fun! Scrabble and Agricola are favourites here, though I always beat DH at Scrabble, and he always beats me at Agricola...

fourchetteoff · 15/05/2015 16:19

Some great ideas again!

And yes- we adore playing Dixit, esp with the kids as its so creative and creepy.

I think my friend had just not really heard of adults playing board games and laughingly thinks it's one step down in weirdness to wife swapping!

Qwerkle is brilliant and good for all ages too.

AmyElliotDunne · 15/05/2015 16:22

Love Cards Against Humanity and it's more acceptable little brother Apples to Apples for the kids.

For any card game geeks, we play Ascension. DP had it on the ipad and loved the illustrations so much that I bought him the real card game as a gift. The kids love it too, as you win crystals, but it's probably a bit complicated for little ones so ideal as an adults only game.

The best thing about it is that you have no idea who is winning until the end so nobody gets downhearted, as it's impossible to tell how well you're doing until it's all over.

CuttingOutTheCrap · 15/05/2015 16:23

We love it too. Pictionary is another good one (the more wine the better!)

SeaCabbage · 15/05/2015 16:50

Which of these good ideas would you say are good for just two adult players?

Deedeecupcake · 15/05/2015 16:51

If you ever are in La Rochelle, there's a fantastic board games cafe called La Grosse Boîte. I was there and played a game that translated into English as "Werewolf" with a group of friends in the evening and it was fantastic fun. Would recommend that game if you have a decent group :)

Lurknomoreladies · 15/05/2015 17:36

I'm now realising just how long it is since I've played a decent board game and remembering how much fun it is. I need board game friends!

CtrlAltDelicious · 15/05/2015 17:43

I have been roped into playing one of those awful role playing geeky gamer board games. It went on for about 4 hours and I was out of wine and slightly hysterical at the end. Not good.
However, my mates and I get together every so often for drinks and always crack open the monopoly or trivial pursuit. It's good fun while drinking and chatting.

fairyqueen · 15/05/2015 17:53

We play lots of the games mentioned here. DD started on carcasonne at about 8. None of us have figured out farmers! There are mini expansion packs perfect as stocking fillers. Also try Mensa, also known cheaper by another name I can't remember.

SockQueen · 15/05/2015 17:58

I enjoy them in general, but get driven to insanity playing them with DH and his family. Every turn takes about 6 hours while they figure out strategies, discuss said strategies with each other and then gloat/mourn once it's all happened. Even Scrabble takes forever! And don't get started on the "Economists' rules" for Monopoly...

I much prefer having a fairly high rate of play, even if it means that sometimes you make a mistake or the strategy isn't perfect, it means I don't die of boredom between turns.

Dominion is a card game rather than board game, but still a really good one IMO.

everygalaxy · 15/05/2015 18:01

We do this with articulate, it gets very heated in the summer after pimms! Need to get CAH me and DH have a very dark sense of humour Grin

Minisoksmakehardwork · 15/05/2015 18:11

We have Lego creationary. It is, as it suggests, the Lego equivalent to pictionary. We've have some very funny looking things to guess at.

brackengirl · 15/05/2015 18:30

We love board games too, favourites being Zooloretto, Thurn and Taxis, Lost Cities (card game) Tikal, Camel Up, Linkee and Quirkle. Pre DC we used to play with friends loads but now game nights are rare and much prized! Can't wait for DD's to be old enough, DD (4) can do Quirkle in a simplified way and I reckon she'll be ready for Zooloretto in a year or so.

MrsFionaCharming · 15/05/2015 18:38

The Firefly board game is brilliant - very easy to waste an entire day in one game of it though!

londonrach · 15/05/2015 18:42

Fav teen game was game if life and used to marry the guys in class we fancied and name our kids. Ok we were sad but hay we played for days.. Molopoly was banned at my pil due to dh and bil not behaving as adults whilst playing. Christmas is amazing as all the old board games get bought out!

cashewnutty · 15/05/2015 18:42

I love playing board games. We are going to friends for dinner tomorrow night and i guarantee we will end up playing a game of some sort. We like shouty outy word and general knowledge games.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 15/05/2015 18:45

Farmers are the key to Carcassonne!

Board games are great, we love the traditional ones as well as the new ones, and I'm always up for a round of Canasta too.

I might be a leetle bit competitive :o

DazzleU · 15/05/2015 18:46

Table top is good for checking out new games

www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7atuZxmT956cWFGxqSyRdn6GWhBxiAwE

Will Wheaton and various Celebes play to win a board game - as you watch gives you an idea of what the game is like.

GeekLove · 15/05/2015 18:52

Gotta love CAH. It is responsible for one of the more bizarre conversations with my mother and brother about what a Fleshlight is.

Cards Against Humanity- not for children but no maturity is required.

Ragwort · 15/05/2015 18:52

We play board games or cards at least once a week, I love it, especially with a teenager in the family as it is so hard to find something 'enjoyable' to do together - when you don't share their taste in films or tv Grin.

StickChildNumberTwo · 15/05/2015 18:54

Your friend is the one missing out! We don't play as much as we used to pre-small person, but still love a good board game evening. SeaCabbage we find Dominion plays well for 2 as well as more.

ArtfulPuss · 15/05/2015 19:29

I grew up playing Trivial Pursuit, Balderdash, Taboo and all kinds of card games whenever we had family friends over. DH and I now have a cupboard full of games, and no one to play them with!
Have converted a few friends recently to Rummikub, which even DS2 (5) is getting the hang of. My personal favourite is Yahtzee - and Boggle, but that is geeky (and even DH refuses to play it with me).

Off to look up Carcassone, CAH and Lego Creationary… and loads of others mentioned above.

PS this has also given me an idea for a school social, so thanks for the thread!
