Just popped into the kitchen and saw a bee crawling along the floor. I saw said bee yesterday but thought it had flown away. Remembering mn advice i quickly made up a sugar solution and using newspaper dipped it in the solution. Ran to get my ipad to take a photo. On return found bee in bowl covered in solution. Have placed bee on window sill now to dry out with the solution and watching it lick its back and drinking the solution. Its now buzzing and sounding more bee like! Bees saved one!

Well done! :)

I did something similar last year on my street, although the bee was on the floor & I was on my way back from the hairdressers so phoned DS & he came running with a spoon. I put the bee on the spoon & we took it home & gave it a sugar solution, but it started raining so I put the spoon in the garage. Made DP open the garage later in case he got dive bombed by a furious bee, but he didn't Grin

YABU

If you really cared, you would have cooked him a full English fry-up.

londonrach · 15/05/2015 12:37

Worra!!! Grin.

I love doing this! We get lots of exhausted bees on the path in front of our house. DS sits with the bee until it's better and flies away, he's fascinated by them.

WorraLiberty · 15/05/2015 12:39

Iggi999 · 15/05/2015 12:42

I have never heard of this, but it's now in my list of things to worry about do! Sugar solution is sugar mixed with a bit of cold water, or is it more complicated than that?

SirChenjin · 15/05/2015 12:42

Worra - the OP could easily be Scottish (or indeed from anywhere else in the UK), in which case your imperialist and somewhat racist 'full English' is hugely offensive Shock Grin

Good for you OP - I love a bee story with a happy ending!

londonrach · 15/05/2015 12:44

Hes flown off! So magically to see. One of my photos shows him licking his legs. Kept doing that with buzzing increasing then just flew off. Leaving you with a happy feeling!!! Worra im saving the full english for when you pop around!!!! (Not to self..must buy eggs, bacon, baked beans and sausages). He wasnt a bumble bee so must be a lone bee..

A nice 'cruise' picture for the bee to read whilst drinking it's nectar... excellent stealth boast, OP! Grin

No, I don't mean it - well done, how did you know it was hungry? I wouldn't have thought of this at all. I will now though

londonrach · 15/05/2015 12:47

Licking its legs..

Oh tell me what to do! I see so many bees crawling along the floor Sad

S.O.Bs!!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/05/2015 12:51

I've realised that actually, I don't know the difference between a bee and a wasp... Shock

I need to google a bit. >>>

Iggi999 · 15/05/2015 12:57

Bees look fatter. It's all the sugar solution Smile

comedycentral · 15/05/2015 13:04

This sounds amazing. I am going to have a full English to celebrate

RabbitsarenotHares · 15/05/2015 13:07

When I got home yesterday I went in the bathroom for a tissue and noticed some toiletries had fallen down from the shelf. I thought it strange but just picked it up, then noticed bird poo in the bath. Realising my cat must have brought a bird in, then let it go, I fetched the steps and climbed up them to check the if the bird was still there. No sign of it, (must have flown out the window) but I did think I could hear a really loud buzzing sound. Couldn't see a bee anywhere, so assumed I had imagined it.

Until I went back in a wee while later, lifted the toilet seat and found a huge bumble bee desperately trying to get out. I did rescue it, then offered it some honey once I'd got it safely on the windowsill, but it decided it wasn't interested and flew off!

londonrach · 15/05/2015 13:18

Iggi you right just water and sugar and yep they fatter.

Good on ya London & for spreading the word, have never heard of this before but now will be looking out for tired bees- just Goggled after reading your post 7 found this link to any clueless like me-

www.rspb.org.uk/news/details.aspx?id=tcm:9-224256

RigglinJigglin · 15/05/2015 13:33

We always give them a dab of honey, jam or maple syrup on a teaspoon... Probably the wrong thing but they love it.

Often wonder if we're just encouraging them to fly in Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/05/2015 15:37

Very good link, BubGal, I had no idea.

OfaFrenchMind · 15/05/2015 15:41

I am scared to death of those things, but I absolutely love their work and feel for them!
So every year, I put out the flowers and watery sugar, close all windows and obsessively check they do not get inside. I always feel saintly and terrified! Grin

Germgirl · 15/05/2015 15:49

The difference between wasps & bees

Aibu to be proud i remembered mn advice and feed a hungry bee
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/05/2015 16:31

Not helpful, Germgirl, but funny. Grin

They look very similar. It would be helpful if wasps could be red and black-striped, like Dennis the Menace.

MaidOfStars · 15/05/2015 16:34

I think honey isn't advised - something to do with hive-specific recipes!

PacificDogwood · 15/05/2015 16:36

Grin "Just an asshole" - so true!!

I had no idea one could 'feed' bees, but at least I find bees and wasps easy to tell apart - fluffy and not-fluffy.

BuzzardBird · 15/05/2015 16:42

DD used to pick up the tired bees at nursery and go and ask the staff to feed them, cue lots of screaming. Grin

Wasps pollinate fruit trees so don't be too hard on the arseholes.
