Just popped into the kitchen and saw a bee crawling along the floor. I saw said bee yesterday but thought it had flown away. Remembering mn advice i quickly made up a sugar solution and using newspaper dipped it in the solution. Ran to get my ipad to take a photo. On return found bee in bowl covered in solution. Have placed bee on window sill now to dry out with the solution and watching it lick its back and drinking the solution. Its now buzzing and sounding more bee like! Bees saved one!

My parents always bought honey from local (hobby) bee keepers.
I have no idea whether there are local bee keepers here - is there an easy way to look them up, I wonder?
I'd really love to buy local honey - as long as it's not as expensive as Manuka we're good Grin

Dh would look at me like this Hmm if I proposed keeping bees - and my bee sting allergic mother would never visit again… wait, there's an idea Wink

TwartFaceBeetj · 16/05/2015 21:28

The local farm shop or a farmers market usual sells local honey

CoffeeBeanie · 16/05/2015 21:42

PDW try this to find your local beekeeping association, they will have info about where and when to buy honey.

My dh was very sceptical, and still is in a way. I am doing this course to get clued up before I start putting my hive(s) together in winter ready for my bees in spring. Even if I decide not to keep bees, it is extremely informative and the beekeepers are a lovely friendly bunch.

CoffeeBeanie · 16/05/2015 21:43

londonrach do you have a pic of the dried and fluffed up bee?

PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 21:43

Aw, thank you, both Smile

I found the Scottish Beekeepers Association, but the website is frankly a bit pants.
I feel a visit to the next farmer's market coming on Smile

londonrach · 16/05/2015 21:51

Oh PDW didn't know you are in Scotland. Farmer's Market sounds good. It shouldn't be more than £5 for a jar of local honey.

I have bought from a beekeeper in the same suburb, hoping to improve my allergies. The honey tastes so much nicer than anything shop bought, we're spoilt forever.

Wagglebee · 16/05/2015 23:08

Londonrach Sorry, late reply but no she wasn't a mason bee. They're smaller and less fluffy.

howabout · 17/05/2015 07:54

If you are anywhere near Glasgow Kelvingrove Art Gallery have there own bee hives open for public observation and education.

PacificDogwood · 17/05/2015 08:11

Yes, I've been to see them in the past - they are lovely and v interesting Smile

But - do they sell honey? That is the pertinent question.
My nearest farmer's market was yesterday…. Humph.

londonrach · 17/05/2015 16:46

Pacific sometimes the local greengrocer sells local honey. We bought a huge tub recently. Beautiful on tiger bread..

If I find a tired bee I scoop it up and put it on the ground in the garden, then make up some sugar solution and then pour a little on the ground, that way it can help itself and it won't get stuck in a dish or anything. Love saving bees, I rescued a really unusual one last year. It was a pale fawny colour.

There are lots of different types of bees, honey bees look more like wasps (sleek rather than fluffy) and bumble bees are very fluffy :) you can learn a lot from the Bee Movie :o

TheCunnyFunt · 17/05/2015 18:02

This is the bee I rescued last year, it was in our kitchen. I thought it was paler than that though, obviously it's not as pale as I thought Confused

londonrach · 17/05/2015 19:41

Cunny...how you take that photo..impressed. My bee was darker and more fluffy when she sorted herself..

I work for a commercial beekeeper (not beekeeping). Check out the BBKA website for details of your local association, they'll be able to point you in the direction of honey for sale. We sell small amounts through local butchers and other local attractions.

Bees are so important to our world, I've been working in this job since January and I've learnt so much about bees. Hopefully be able to go on a course come September!

Rach I have an iphone 5c and it has a really good camera on it. I've found that it's so much better than our ipad camera.
