To be a bit disappointed in Chuka Umunna

I thought Chuka Umunna would be a good candidate for Labour to re-invent itself and appeal to more voters. I thought he spoke well and sincerely and was a lot better than Ed Miliband. But I read today that he lives in a £1m house reportedly funded by a Family Trust located in the tax haven of Jersey. How can ordinary folk take him and his party seriously going on about tax avoidance.

If those are shark eyes - then I like them.

SuburbanRhonda · 13/05/2015 22:02

Being centre-right worked for Phony Blair.

HalleLouja · 13/05/2015 22:08

I have said this many times on mumsnet. But my aunt was in chambers with Tony B and he was the "most right wing person she ever met". Look where that got him.

My other claim to fame was being mates with Judge Rinder. He really wanted to be PM of the Tory party. When I messaged him recently and asked what happened to the plan he said there is still time. He would be after Cameron's party and not the reds.

Sorry irrelevant post.

Labour need someone who will appeal to the more traditional Tory voters in the way of Tony without pissing off the traditional left too much. Not sure who that is though. Will be interesting to see who puts themselves forwards.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/05/2015 08:32

There's no-one who could appeal to all those voters, hallelouja. Chuka would appeal to the former, Andy Burnham to the latter.

And with respect, as a lefty I would want a little more from my party's leader than not be too pissed off by them Hmm

Morelikeguidelines · 14/05/2015 08:44

A house in Streatham will ordinarily cost 1m. As others have said it won't have cost that much when they bought it!

HermioneWeasley · 14/05/2015 08:54

Still ROFLing at pricey shits!

Zampa · 14/05/2015 09:01

He's an awful constituency MP and that immediately counts against him in my eyes. Didn't respond to me on one particular issue despite acknowledging my communication and promising a response.

Also, like Cameron, a phony football fan. "Supports" Crystal Palace when they're getting the headlines.

However, knowing what house prices have done in the area, don't think that living in a £1m house should count against him.

ThroughThick I thought you just are what you are

Most people would look at Chuka and if asked what colour he was would say black. Racial labels are pretty meaningless any how.

BTW my Sil whose child died still calls herself a mother to 2 children, even though she only has 1 living child. I,ll correct her.

LarrytheCucumber · 14/05/2015 09:08

DH and I saw him on television and he came across as aggressive and arrogant. I would not want him to lead the party.
What about Liz from Leicester? Can't remember her surname. She's an outsider I would imagine.

chippednailvarnish · 14/05/2015 09:09

This £1 million Streatham house is hardly flash.

I'm of the opinion that most politicians are exactly the same...

annielouise · 14/05/2015 09:11

TheBlackRider - I was just about to post the same report on him from the Independent. Called London night clubs full of trash and C list celebs and was wondering what's "hot" in Miami right now. He's an elite snob and I hope he isn't made leader. I don't think he cares about people.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/05/2015 09:14

Liz Kendalls partner is Greg Davies. Wouldn't that be great if he gets to move into No 10, he's very funny.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/05/2015 09:15

....a lot better than Ed Balls, anyway.....

Zampa · 14/05/2015 09:17

Black/Annie - I believe that the "trash" comment was from his university days or something. A long time ago, anyway ... Not a nice thing to say but we've all made stupid comments in our youth. I don't like him but wouldn't hold that against him.

chippednailvarnish · 14/05/2015 09:18

But how much is their house worth!?! That's that's the real issue Wink

ConferencePear · 14/05/2015 09:21

I think Labour need a leader who is not London based; at least one who can pronounce Worcester. From where I sit far too much in the UK is London based.

MajesticWhine · 14/05/2015 09:22

Appealing to the centre and right voters is going to be more important if Labour are to have a chance next time. which makes Chuka Umunna a more sensible choice than Andy Burnham. If the core Labour left vote doesn't like Chuka, then a lot of them might vote for him anyway, or maybe just not turn up. It's the marginals in England that need to be targeted, and left-wing union backed Andy Burnham would frighten them off, just as they didn't like Ed Milliband.

LittleBearPad · 14/05/2015 09:22

That Indie link doesn't paint a pleasant picture.

I can't believe he's the best option regardless of the Indie link. Not least because he annoys the hell out of me.

LittleBearPad · 14/05/2015 09:24

Or Majestic the left wing will vote SNP, PC and UKIP. Ed Milliband didn't take the ukip threat to labour seriously, the next leader has to.

LittleBearPad · 14/05/2015 09:27

Andy Burnham also annoys the hell out of me. I like the idea of a woman leader.

Amethyst24 · 14/05/2015 09:27

Liz Kendall. She was on Newsnight last night and really impressed me.

MajesticWhine · 14/05/2015 09:31

LittleBearPad - I am kind of thinking (and hoping) that UKIP support will diminish before the next election due to the referendum on the EU. Scotland is more of a problem though. Labour could probably only win back seats in Scotland with a solidly left wing leader.

It's a shame Sajid Khan isn't running for leader but I think he would be a fab london mayor.
