To be a bit disappointed in Chuka Umunna

I thought Chuka Umunna would be a good candidate for Labour to re-invent itself and appeal to more voters. I thought he spoke well and sincerely and was a lot better than Ed Miliband. But I read today that he lives in a £1m house reportedly funded by a Family Trust located in the tax haven of Jersey. How can ordinary folk take him and his party seriously going on about tax avoidance.

Why are people calling him black? He's mixed.

TheRollingCrone · 13/05/2015 20:13

I think he has described himself as black. As is his prerogative.

Bloody hell, I wasn't sure if I liked him myself as I'd like more of a break with the past, but 'shark eyes'? Someone's DH heard he wasn't sure what his political beliefs were as a young man? His shits are a bit pricey? Does nobody look at what people actually say and do anymore?

WalkingThePlank · 13/05/2015 20:54

We had a bit of a giggle when he was on last night's news. He's usually very naicely spoken but he'd gone all Sarf London geezer as he launched his leadership bid.

Man of the people he is.

Mandatorymongoose · 13/05/2015 20:56

From the things he's had to say so far it sounds like he's quite firmly to the right and while I know Labour have to sort themselves out one way or another I'm just vaguely concerned we're going to end up with Tories and Tories-Lite next election.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/05/2015 21:00

I think he has described himself as black. As is his perogative Really? I thought you just are what you are.

I quite like him, he's very appealling, (not a Labour voter) but somehow seems a bit lightweight. It'll be an interesting contest as it evolves.

You meant shirts, eh, cardi? Grin

MehsMum · 13/05/2015 21:02

X-post, Rhonda

cardibach · 13/05/2015 21:05

I meant suits - stupid autocorrect!
And Through yes, of course it's his prerogative! If he identifies as black that's what he is. And I'm not fussed to 'mixed' as a description in any case.

MaryBerrysLostCherry · 13/05/2015 21:06

DH likes a pricey shit too. Doesn't make him a bad person.

TheoriginalLEM · 13/05/2015 21:07

I thought he was a man :)

Aermingers · 13/05/2015 21:15

I have heard he is a crashing snob and not very pleasant.

He's not my first choice. I used to think he'd be a refreshing change but he seems to much of a career politician and that's not what I want in a leader.

RosaGertrudeJekyll · 13/05/2015 21:24

Interesting i heard the word "streatham" and he mentioned he had an interesting background.

I agree with Humourless that we should not write someone off because of their house or tastes...however he simpy comes across as a smoothie who wants to whisper in our ear to tell us what we want to hear.

He does not seem straight up to me.

David Lammy, does, he is the absolute real deal, no smoothie smarminess, he has sat on numerous boards and has roots in Tottenham.

David Lammy has a persona that says, what you see is what you get, which of course was eds main problem.

chippednailvarnish · 13/05/2015 21:24

I was hoping for Dan Jarvis, the fact he wants to put his family first makes me like him even more.

RosaGertrudeJekyll · 13/05/2015 21:25

No of course not, its a fine line isn't it. Chuck looks like he would covert a nice shirt, covert a pretty GF covert a flashy car, doesnt make him a bad person of course not, but does it make him an ideal Labour candidate?

Christelle2207 · 13/05/2015 21:31

I think he's decent but the daily fail is probably right for once in saying he may struggle to connect with "core"
Labour voters in the north.
Andy Burnham will have the opposite problem.

soapboxqueen · 13/05/2015 21:31

I liked Jarvis too.

soapboxqueen · 13/05/2015 21:32

I'll probably vote for Burnham.

Viviennemary · 13/05/2015 21:35

Next he'll have a 24 carat solid gold loo encrusted with diamonds as well as designer suits. Grin

David Lammy has put himself forward for London mayor. No?

BishopBrennansArse · 13/05/2015 21:54

Allegedly pro austerity.
Could be interesting.
