Really not sure!

I have dental pain. Been coping on ABs for 2 days but tonight! I'm maxed out (probably over) on paracetamol and ibuprofen (which I probably shouldn't be taking as bf and asthmatic). Pain is intense. Up to my temple round to the back of my neck. I feel sick hot and shaky and dizzy.

Called the dental OOH, no dentists on (so dead useful) and they told me to take myself to A&E.

I'm here but feel like a fraud! It's a tooth. Other than dose me up so i can rip the fucker from my head myself what can they do??

It might depend on where you live but in Manchester they coordinate emergency appts through a central phone number, if you can't see your own dentist you are triaged over the phone & given a same day appt with another dentist if needed. Perhaps 111 could tell you if you have a similar set up in your area? Poor you though, hope you get seen today

Pantah630 · 12/05/2015 10:26

If you can take aspirin, crush one and put it around the affected tooth, it does work. Then get to a health food shop and grab some bee propolis and gargle with it every couple of hours until you can get a dentist to see you. I hate dental pain, it is the most debilitating pain going, like you I've not used pain relief in labour but reach for all the pills for tooth ache. A wheaty bag pressed against your cheek helps a little too. Fingers crossed you can get it out soon.

42andGaffaTape · 12/05/2015 11:13

Got some Oragel from the pharmacist. It was a blessing for me when I had user pain.

Hope you get your appointment op!

42andGaffaTape · 12/05/2015 11:14

Uber pain Stoopid phone.

Clutterbugsmum · 12/05/2015 11:20

There's an over the counter mouthwash called Oraldene unfortunately this has been discontinued.

Trumpity · 12/05/2015 11:24

If you're in / near London I know where you can go, no appointment necessary.

lordsandladies · 12/05/2015 12:57

Thanks all.

I've managed to get seen at a dental hospital in Cardiff (top tip that!) By calling direct and begging.

Still in pain but feeling an end in sight. I have an infection and as it's the 2nd one it's obviously become resistant to the ABs probably from being left too long between temp filling and actual treatment (6 months!) So the medicated packing is no longer preventing bugs.

So they've doubled the ABs with another type and hopefully it will start to work and ease the pain.

Ridiculous the dental situation honestly :(

So pleased you've been seen now! I agree, labour was far easier than an abscess on the facial nerve. I had a succession of them and I've never felt so helpless. The problem was that the infection needed to be clear before they could act but the abs only last so long. it's a vicious cycle. Hope you get it sorted soon Smile

somewheresomehow · 12/05/2015 15:19

try (high strength) ibuprofen instead of co-codamol it worked better for me when I had an abscess should help calm the inflamation

RB68 · 12/05/2015 15:31

with co codamol if you get some on prescription it is 30mg codeine and 300mg paracetamol over the counter its only 8/500 and the prescription one is obv lots stronger so worth asking for prescription for that rather than just using OTC. Also nurofen and paracetamol can be alternated and dosage should be based on your weight (but packets give a standard dosing) so by going to A&E or Dr they can calculate dosage - certainly thats how iit works for kids so would have thought there would be something in that for adults as well. Heat on the face in form of hot water bottle is good as is the clove oil or real cloves held firmly between teeth at point of pain.

Not sure if they use volterol type medication for teeth issues but that is another good pain killer if you can take it.

RB68 · 12/05/2015 15:32

sorry 30mg/500mg for the prescription co-codamol not 300

FoodieToo · 12/05/2015 15:59

I had an abscess on my tooth and I wanted to go to hospital and ask them to anaesthetise me until it had gone away.
It was that bad.
Sympathies OP.

lordsandladies · 13/05/2015 18:36

Well end of the pain hopefully. It got way too constant and ABs did nothing, so I've just been to my dentist and made them pull the bastard thing out.

Waiting for anesthesia to wear off...

VelvetRose · 13/05/2015 18:46

You poor thing OP. I've never felt as ill as when I had an abcess and subsequent infection. It was so painful I felt like I was going mad. Hugs to you and best wishes for a speedy recovery!

RobinHumphries · 13/05/2015 18:49

NEVER put a whole aspirin or crushed up aspirin next to a tooth. It does NOT work - I mean would you hold an aspirin to your head if you had a headache? It just burns the gum just like it kills the skin when you put it on a verruca or a wart.

legoqueen · 13/05/2015 18:54

How awful that you've ended up losing the tooth though, that's just not right Flowers

ChatEnOeuf · 13/05/2015 18:55

Glad the tooth is out, hope it's the end. Though for future reference, within the recommended dose limits, co-codamol is fine when BFing.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 13/05/2015 18:56

Good to hear you were seen! Dental pain is the pits isn't it.

Im on tail end of abscess and AB... I was away in Uk - got so desperate prevented myself on a Sunday at an MIU... I wasn't confident- as last time this happened NO-ONE would treat me....including GP and hospital ED - after I'd been told to present myself there 20 miles away and wait 4 hours... However the MIU was brilliant... The nurse practitioner was very pragmatic.. She said I can't treat Dental pain, as I'm not a dentist... But also it means I don't know definitely that it is, so therefore I'll prescribe antibiotocs for a possible facial absess... I could have whooped for joy - if it didnt bloody hurt so much!

Signlake · 13/05/2015 18:59

Definitely not unreasonable. I remember the pain I was in when my wisdom tooth was coming through and the gum became infected
:(

I hope you get some working pain relief OP

IHateStampysVoice · 13/05/2015 19:01

You poor mofo.

My ex went through something similar, it went on for weeks because he didn't have a bloomin dentist and no one would take him on (busy) and the emergency dentist was doing the bare minimum.

He had to state at mine so I could look after him, he started to get in my way after a few days and at one point he was crawling on the floor simpering and delirious with pain. It started to irritate me after a while (I know, I'm terrible) so I have him a Valium (I know, I should be jailed) and sent him to bed. Except he is a wuss when it comes to Valium (2mg Ffs) and he fell out of bed.
He got an appointment two hours later thank FUCK.

Note to self - never give ANYONE diazepam. Jeez. (In my defence, it was hard as well as annoying to see a grown man in that much pain!)

Chocolatefudgebrownieicecream · 13/05/2015 19:05

Chat... No co codamol is not ok when breeding. Recent research has linked it to infant deaths and it is not recommended. Many people do not do this including my GP until I insisted she phone the medicines safety line and they told her the new advice. Very low risk (I think) but it is not recommended.

Chocolatefudgebrownieicecream · 13/05/2015 19:06

Breast feeding, not breeding!

ClareAbshire · 13/05/2015 19:06

I always say I would rather go through the labour I had- just gas and air- than my tooth abscess again. Horrific pain. Ask at a and e for some ice in a rubber glove. They'll have both and sticking it on your face will help.
