School asked me for 20p

MoanCraft · 11/05/2015 22:06

Ds is going on a field trip. I'm always really busy (aren't we all), partly because I help out with lots of community things and one is the school committee.
I spend a lot of money when funds don't come through to cover for stuff that's asked for or needed by teachers etc., it goes without saying that I have given a lot of my time at events.
School asks for money to pay for school trip. I mistakenly underpay by 20p.
I get a call from the school asking me to bring in the 20p.
AIBU to be a bit miffed.

OP 'AIBU?'

MN: yip, 'fraid so.

OP: 'No I'm not!'

Why post?

ThingummyJigg · 11/05/2015 22:24

I think you should stop chipping in when funds don't come through.

the 20p thing is annoying but do those organising the funding of the trip know that you've put in financially elsewhere?

BadgersArse · 11/05/2015 22:25

here. Op

School asked me for 20p
MoanCraft · 11/05/2015 22:25

Eigg I do volunteer altruistically. Where did I ever say I was made to.
I don't expect to underpay. It was a mistake. Therefore I didn't expect anything regarding payment. I expected to be paying the full amount which I misread as 8.50 instead of 8.70.
Why try and say I am expecting to underpay.
If I expect something I would have planned to underpay.
I can't be possible to expect to underpay if I thought I'd paid the full amount.

I am even taking some of the kids on the trip to save on coach costs.

Do you need special insurance for that?

MoanCraft · 11/05/2015 22:27

Dione no, I'm not reimbursed. I don't expect to be. They need stuff. I do my best to give stuff. Anything that makes things better and easier for the kids at the school including my ds, I try to subsidise.

Eight op YABU, but for something else and not what you posted

OP posts:
BadgersArse · 11/05/2015 22:28

OP what, exactly, are you annoyed about?

is it
a) the amount
b) being asked
C( being asked by phone call
d) them not realising you do a lot at school?

Kitchenconundrums · 11/05/2015 22:28

Op I can understand you feeling miffed, but I expect the person asking for the 20p won't have put 2 and 2 together or weighed up your voluntary contributions against your debts. I expect they are simply going through a list of people to chase up.

WilburIsSomePig · 11/05/2015 22:28

I do loads for the school and give as much as I can financially and with my time. If I'd underpaid, mistakenly or otherwise, I would expect them to tell me. No biggie and no need to be miffed. I would expect the school to pay the extra for me.

Eigg · 11/05/2015 22:28

Moan I completely understand that you unintentionally underpaid. I completely understand that you fully intend to pay the 20p.

However, you can't contend that you volunteer entirely altruistically if you expect to get special treatment (even if it is only to the tune of 20p)

MammaTJ · 11/05/2015 22:28

It probably cost them more to phone you than they will get by you handing in your 20p.

I would be a bit miffed at this wastefulness, considering how much schools are always working to raise funds.

It would have been better for the teacher to mention it to you on drop off or pick up.

WilburIsSomePig · 11/05/2015 22:29

*wouldn't!!!

MoanCraft · 11/05/2015 22:30

Worry, apparently not. I suppose it must be ok with parents permission. We have all signed to say it's ok for someone else to take your DC by car.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 11/05/2015 22:31

Tbh if I was the teacher, knowing how much you do for the school I would of just paid the 20p for you.

TendonQueen · 11/05/2015 22:31

Definitely not worth a phone call. I think an apologetic mention next time they saw you in person would have been ok. I do get your point though.

Wonder how many of the people going on about how you shouldn't expect special treatment for volunteering do any themselves? I am aware some posters have said they do and/or are teachers who pay for stuff themselves. But I have also noticed that people who are vocal about volunteers being entitled are often keen to give up their own time for no recognition as they expect others to do.

Eigg · 11/05/2015 22:32

Moan you do realise where the 20p would have come from if they hadn't asked you for it don't you?

The purse of one of the admin staff or teachers.

You can't really think that that would be preferable to asking you politely to correct your error?

MoanCraft · 11/05/2015 22:32

Mamma, I think this is the thing that's got to me. That someone made a phone call and asked me to bring it in.
I do agree with some previous posters that it would have been an idea to put a note in dcs bag or mentioned it when I was in.

OP posts:
msgrinch · 11/05/2015 22:32

I volunteer and donate, I just don't expect special treatment or a round of applause for it. I do it because I like to Smile

quietasamouse · 11/05/2015 22:33

I think you're just overthinking this a little!

You are taking into account all of the things you have done for the school, but from school's point of view it is a separate thing. They're just collating the money for the trip, and yours is 20p short, so they've asked you for it. Their job is just to get the total to balance. That's all they're thinking about, then they will move on to their next task. Job done!

WorraLiberty · 11/05/2015 22:35

Worry, apparently not. I suppose it must be ok with parents permission. We have all signed to say it's ok for someone else to take your DC by car.

But surely they'll have to check your car is roadworthy etc, as part of the risk assessment?

Depending on how many parent drivers there are, that could take ages.

Eigg · 11/05/2015 22:36

Tendon I'm all for volunteers being 'recognised' for their hard work. I'm not sure that means someone else (probably a member of staff) should have to sub her though.

Also I'm not sure I can find the post where anyone said volunteers were 'entitled' - can you point me to it?

Hakluyt · 11/05/2015 22:37

What sort of stuff have you paid hundreds of pounds for?

BadgersArse · 11/05/2015 22:37

as someone who knows someone who accidentally killed someone on school business in a car, I would be very careful where your insurance is!
