AIBU when making a sandwich to spread a filling on both sides?

After seeing the bacon AIBU I got into a discussion and I'm being accused of being over zealous because say if you have Nutella or Jam I spread both sides of the sandwich but the other person says everyone else only spreads one side?

Well surely a sandwich has a filling? Ie in the middle?

VashtaNerada · 10/05/2015 22:05

You mean some people just put jam on a slice of bread and then place a dry slice of bread on top? No, that's so wrong. Jam on both then squidge them together.

CinnabarRed · 10/05/2015 22:07

Oh! Butter in both. But filling on the bottom slice only. Defo.

CinnabarRed · 10/05/2015 22:08

Butter on both.

HappyMeerkat · 10/05/2015 22:09

Jellie

I mean stuff like Jam you can't just put jam in the middle it's on at least one side.

Vashta

No I mean butter both sides but like Nutella on only one side and only butter on the other. To me it doesn't give enough taste just bread and butter

Depends - are you using butter?

If I'm making a jam sandwich I'll get two bits of bread, butter both, but only put jam on the one, as the jam is quite sticky, so it would adhere to the butter of the second side.

If no butter I can't help you, sorry.

CinnabarRed · 10/05/2015 22:09

The bottom slice is the one on the left.

Ohbollocksandballs · 10/05/2015 22:10

I'm a both side spreader Grin

ASorcererIsAWizardSquared · 10/05/2015 22:11

butter both pieces of bread, filling on the bottom piece.

the only time i put something on both pieces of bread is if i'm eating a cheese sandwich and i put the branston pickle on the top slice as i dont like spreading in on the cheese

brittabot · 10/05/2015 22:14

What? No! Butter and spread generously slice on left hand side, put right hand side on top and press. Either square or triangle depending on your mood.

Purplepixiedust · 10/05/2015 22:21

I don't put butter on sandwiches but would put say cream cheese on one side with leaves and then Mayo on the other and put on top. If I just had cream cheese I would just spread one side and put dry bread on top but usually sandwiches have multi fillings and if you put salad in you need something to make the bread stick in lieu of the butter!

Akire · 10/05/2015 22:23

Jam on one side! If you want double just add extra lump, why do the job twice? You have to bite both prices at the same time.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 10/05/2015 22:26

You butter both sides, put the filling on one side, any additional condiments on the other side if they are sticky (eg pickle) or on top of the first side if they might fall out (eg salad)

strawberryshakes · 10/05/2015 22:29

Butter is disgusting and does not belong on a sandwhich. Nutella on both sides of the bread. Now I'm hungry and off to go make one Grin

Starlightbright1 · 10/05/2015 22:32

It had never occured to me to put jam on both sides...no idea why? I guess my mum never did
I am with Akire...Big think spread if you want a lot

ThingummyJigg · 10/05/2015 22:33

Why would you jam/nutella/philadelphia both sides? Just put the filling on one side, thickly.

My bottom is on the right [fnarr]

Also, I put the pickle/mustard/sprouts on the bread, not the cheese. Does anyone put pickle on the cheese, then the bread on top?

steff13 · 10/05/2015 22:34

Why take the extra step of putting the filling on both sides when you could just put more filling on one side?

2rebecca · 10/05/2015 22:40

I never have jam in a sandwich would have it on toast or single slice of bread. If I'm having a sandwich I want something bulky in the middle and layer filling on left side and put other side on top maybe spread with mayo or butter first. Agree seems pointless doing 2 thin coats of a filling rather than 1 thick coat

HappyMeerkat · 10/05/2015 22:51

I dunno to me it just seems systematic butter/marge on each and then the jam or whatever on both. I dunno maybe it's because even though you eat both sides at once it's like an insurance policy against my shoddy spreading skills to make sure all parts are covered and you don't just get a butter mouthful. Never occurred to me you get more it's just a complete spread type thing

You don't need butter if you've got something intrinsically fatty or moist in your sandwich - like nutella, peanut butter, banana, anything involving mayo/pickle/liquidy condiments, brie and soft cheeses.

I'd make and exception for jam as butter adds to the taste, and jam without butter sinks into the bread.

Everything goes on the bottom, the top piece of bread is the lid. the exception is a sandwich with mayo or pickle or mustard, and in that case the condiment goes on the lid everything else on the bottom.

I hearby declare these the sandwich rules. Grin

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 10/05/2015 23:00

The bottom slice is always on the right. Then butter or mayo (not with jam obviously) on both slices & a filling only on the right hand slice.

I can't believe so many of you are making your sandwiches all wrong! Shock

HappyMeerkat · 10/05/2015 23:03

Sandwich making really is an art it seems haha Smile

The bottom slice is always on the right.

Typical right-handed bias.

Grapejuicerocks · 10/05/2015 23:09

Why make double the work for yourself? Just spread it thickly.

But then I do butter both sides of the bread, which in itself, is also illogical I suppose.
