The VE memories today were great British tradition and remembrance rolled into one. But how did our future king achieve that row of medals? Don't remember him being in any conflict or active service.

Once again: they aren't 'medals off mummy'. They reflect the constitutional role of the monarchy/heirs. You might not like that (fair enough, plenty of room for debate about the monarchy) but it is puerile to see it personally as being about 'mummy'.

The royals occupy specific roles in their royal capacity. These roles relate to military and do come with pomp and circumstance because that's, well, how royal shit goes and it goes that way for lots of reasons, constitutional and ceremonial.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 10/05/2015 23:34

The armed forces are nominally Her Majesty's Armed Forces. Come Charlie's accession he'll be their head. It is what it is.

Compo - he has earned his pilots wings in the RAF, earned the right to, and commanded a ship in the RN & has completed the para training within the Army.

I too have the 'tinpot' medals you have taken umbrage to, and am extremely proud to wear them.

When you are able to complete the basic training and trade training requirements of the armed forces, please feel free to slag off those who can and have. Until then, your view on this is without merit imo.

Many thanks!

ComposHatComesBack · 11/05/2015 01:05

I am fully aware that he spent a brief period in the RAF it doesn't mean he earned four star rank in each of the services. He got them as a birthday present.fact.

You don't know Jackie chan about me my level of physical fitness or otherwise so please don't make assumptions.

I am not slagging off anyone bar the royal's tendency to hand titles, ranks and honours to themselves. Disagree with me if you like but don't try and question my right to debate these matters. Both the royals and the armed services are public institutions paid for by tax payers, so what they do or don't do is open to debate and neither should be treated with unquestioning veneration.

bananaramadramallama · 11/05/2015 01:23

Oh, so you have served in one of the armed forces then compo - apologies!

I think we're all entitled to a view on the armed forces of our country, whether or not we've completed basic training. No one is "slagging off" soldiers here and I don't think Charles needs anyone to defend him.

bananaramadramallama · 11/05/2015 08:52

I don't think compo does either Iggy, to be fair.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it takes more than physical stamina alone to get to the point of even beginning your proper role in the armed forces - I felt that compo was undermining our experiences, including Charles, that is all.

But it's ok, because I made an assumption about him not having been in the forces and it looks like I was mistaken so I apologised for that.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/05/2015 09:09

My view is that he has been born into a life where he is expected to lead, he is 66 years old and still waiting to become king at a time when most people are thinking about retirement. I'd rather he carried out these highly visible and responsible roles, which are obligations not hobbies, than just sit around waiting to become king. I'm team muggle BTW.

SaucyJack · 11/05/2015 09:11

Maybe he got them from doing the Sainsbury's sports relief mile?

bananaramadramallama · 11/05/2015 09:14

Saucyjack Grin

ClaudiaNaughton · 11/05/2015 09:18

Why would we have to "have completed basic training and trade training" Confused in order to have an opinion?

SirSpamalot · 11/05/2015 09:27

DH has just complete 24 years in the army and has 10 Medals. 3 of those are 'gizzits' (or 'tin pot'), the rest are for operational tours and long service/good conduct.

He has no problem with the royals wearing medals. (Nor Harry serving in Afghanistan which is the other thing that seems to piss off a lot of civilians --but no one serving that I've ever met).

If he hasn't got an issue with it, I don't have an issue with it.

bananaramadramallama · 11/05/2015 09:48

You don't Claudia, but if you haven't then you can't possibly know what it takes to get to the stage of just serving day to day, that's all.

Have an opinion, but don't undermine the experiences of those who have served, that's the point I was making to Compo.

To slag a person off for wearing a uniform they have earned the right to wear is not something I like to see.

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 11/05/2015 12:50

why does that piss off civilians?

SirSpamalot · 11/05/2015 13:16

Dragon

Because him being there is apparently a 'token gesture', puts 'other soldiers lives at risk' and is 'playing at being a soldier' whilst 'hiding behind an armed guard'

Are just a few of the opinions I've heard/read.

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 11/05/2015 13:24

oh yes, i remember now - most people (i think) just think thats the DM winding up the masses

Just so you know where i am coming from (I'm not trying to turn this in to a big thing or a flaming or an argument, this is just my point of view) A link on its own has no value, what is important about the link? what do you think about it? thats added value, just a 'let me google that for you' with a link, well we can all use google, this is for discussion, not a link library (in my own view)

Roseforarose · 11/05/2015 17:59

Yes Harry was a bit of a liability in Afganistan purely because he is in the royal family. They only let him get involved up to a certain point.
