to think that people who depend on benefits will be better off under a Tory government than a Labour one?

Labour were clear that they would be tougher on benefits than the tories, were clear that they would cut benefits, and were clear that they would continue with austerity measures:

YABU.

That is all.

Samcro · 10/05/2015 11:49

makes no odds now does it.
we have a tory government who will continue to cut things like benefits for disabled people.
so no disabled people (one group~) will not be "better off"

YouTheCat · 10/05/2015 11:53

YABU totally. And dim.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 10/05/2015 11:55

Who are these people who depend that you talk of, Sick? disabled?

GlitterBelle · 10/05/2015 12:04

I have lived in fear under the coalition. It's going to be far worse now.

How could you think things will be okay under them? They've announced 12 billion in cuts on welfare but won't say what, which means they think even their voters might disapprove! It's going to be disabled, carers, lone parents and tax credits at my guess.

Every cut to disability benefits is less independence, worsening health, more stress and anxiety and more reliance on the NHS.

lambsie · 10/05/2015 12:04

If they get rid of carers allowance as proposed we will be more than 200 a month worse off.

soapboxqueen · 10/05/2015 12:04

Absolutely they will, assuming better has a different definition in your dictionary.

WD41 · 10/05/2015 12:05

Don't be ridiculous.

soapboxqueen · 10/05/2015 12:05

We'll lose carers allowance too

Trapper · 10/05/2015 12:05

yes Ignore - and the jobless. I do not understand why people seem to believe that Labour would have been better for those receiving state support. It was labour who proposed the bedroom tax. They also backed the benefits cap.

The leaked document considered restricting the carer’s allowance to those eligible for universal credit (affecting 40 per cent of claimants). The Conservatives disowned the documents. We will see how it pans out I guess, but I think the Conservative Party will struggle to secure back bencher support for getting rid of carers allowance. Carers allowance is cheap compared with the cost of 'professional' care.

soapboxqueen · 10/05/2015 12:23

Trapper did the same not happen the last time?

GratefulHead · 10/05/2015 12:26

Anyone doubting that the Tories are looking at Carefs Allowance should know that I am now summoned to the jobcentre for a "work focused interview" every five weeks. My adviser sees it as a waste of his time but we have a nice chat and generally I leave feeling good. He has set questions he jas to ask me though...where I see myself in five years time for example. Will I go back to my old job or look for something different etc.

MargoReadbetter · 10/05/2015 12:27

They've already announced plans to scrap grants for access to work for the disabled. Affecting mainly visually impaired and deaf people. Already creating more unemployment or hardship. Not bad after 48 hours, what d'you think, OP?

BunnyFint · 10/05/2015 12:27

Oh my.

Have you been attacking the solvents with gusto?

I can't think of any other reason why you would think people dependent on benefits, would be better off under a Conservative government. You have to be on glue.

Samcro · 10/05/2015 12:27

Trapper your not wrong. carers allowance is so cheap. in my situation we would seriously have to look at residential care. we won't be the only ones
that will cost £££££ more

CadieAgain · 10/05/2015 12:30

Tougher on benefits? Our welfare state isn't something to be cracked down on like crime or anti-social behaviour! I know it not your wording OP but it's horrible.

peedoffblue · 10/05/2015 12:31

Not better off under Conservatives, but we can't guarantee that Labour wouldn't have cut vital benefits too.

Redlocks28 · 10/05/2015 12:32

Carers allowance
Child benefit
Disability benefits
SMP

Winter fuel allowance womt be going anywhere though...

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 10/05/2015 12:35

Those dependent on welfare are as 'better off' under the Tories, as an ant would be under a boot. They have already destroyed lives with their policies, it's about to get worse. Don't know why I'm saying this, I think the OP is just being goady starting this thread.

HappenstanceMarmite · 10/05/2015 12:36

It was labour who proposed the bedroom tax. They also backed the benefits cap.

Is that right?! (Not rhetorical question. I really want to know)

Trapper · 10/05/2015 12:36

Cadie - I agree, it is horrible. I apologise if linking the article caused any distress.
I guess I am concerned that in the backlash against the Conservative Party election result, people seem to be deluding themselves that the Labour party would have been different.
Gratefulhead - sorry, I don't know your situation, but if you are a full time carer, this does seem to be a waste of everyone's time! Thank goodness you have a sensible and 'human' adviser.
