To hate nicknames??

And by nicknames I don't mean Bobby or Bob for Robert, or Bill, or Will, or Jimmy, Or Jay...etc or anything relating to the name the person has, but nicknames that reveal nothing about what the person's name actually is??

I have a few acquaintances and friends of friends that have the daftest nicknames... I won't write them but they are as stupid as "pork pie man" or "Grinder" "screwdriver" or... I don't know, anything fucking stupid...

If I get introduced to them or hear people talking about them, I'm just completely put off and think "how immature" (These are all people aged 25 plus)

I'm being unreasonable aren't I, people can call themselves what the hell they want...

Still annoys me though!!

I never said I had a problem with shortened names if people chose them for their child. In the case of my child I love her long name. MIL decided she should have a shortened name and took it upon herself lol.

They annoy me because of the specifically long winded, immature and nonsensical ones that people in my circle of friends seem to have and whether I like it or not the phrase "oh grow up!!" Runs through my mind when I hear it lol

I am quite possibly the worst offender in my family. I love to chop a name down and then add a few rhyming bits with it.

I'm a nightmare.

Can't go into what I call my grandkids but here's another example.

My in laws had a budgie called Duke. Every pet they ever had was called Duke. On this occasion the poor dog and budgie were both called Duke. Anyway I used to go up to budgie Duke and sit and say who's a budgie, wudgie, pudgie sludgie then?

To my utter delight it would sit there for ages going through all the permutations of anything that rhymed with udgie!

Much to pa in laws annoyance.it annoyed the crap out of him( he was a miserable old git) and to my sheer delight.

It was a brilliant mimic and talker and then when it was two it got out of an open and flew away never to be seen again.

I swear it was the pa in law that did it!!!

I also called my sons really long names. Then I instantly shortened then.

Think archiebald and bartholomew or archie and Bart .

I'm my own worst enemy.

I think shortening names is fine because then the kids can choose how they want to shorten it or not shorten it themselves. It gives people more choice about what their name will be.

I would marine that most nicknames for older people date from their youth, though, and as PPs have pointed out once you call someone a name it is hard to change.
Yes to the Welsh nicknames too! My favourite is a local police officer who is a little on the short side. He's universally known as laptop. Because he's a small PC...
