To hate nicknames??

And by nicknames I don't mean Bobby or Bob for Robert, or Bill, or Will, or Jimmy, Or Jay...etc or anything relating to the name the person has, but nicknames that reveal nothing about what the person's name actually is??

I have a few acquaintances and friends of friends that have the daftest nicknames... I won't write them but they are as stupid as "pork pie man" or "Grinder" "screwdriver" or... I don't know, anything fucking stupid...

If I get introduced to them or hear people talking about them, I'm just completely put off and think "how immature" (These are all people aged 25 plus)

I'm being unreasonable aren't I, people can call themselves what the hell they want...

Still annoys me though!!

YANBU.

Nicknames for adults are just weird and embarrassing.

MythicalKings · 09/05/2015 05:58

A man down our lane saw a dog owner not pick up a pile of dog shit laid on the pavement. He got a trowel and picked it up and followed the woman home. He rang her doorbell and when she opened the door deposited the shit on her doorstep explaining her dog had dropped it earlier.

He is known universally as "dog shit man". He's quite proud of that.

MidniteScribbler · 09/05/2015 06:13

I spent my holidays in a very small community that if you didn't have nicknames, no one would know who you were talking about. There's so many traditional names and family history tied up with it, and so nicknames are actually a necessity.

ItsADinosaur · 09/05/2015 06:14

Men always have multiple Pauls in their life

And multiple Daves! Everyone knows a Dave.

WilburIsSomePig · 09/05/2015 06:24

I'm not too bothered about them. My two close friend from school still call me Fred and I'm 48 and female. I don't think it would even occur to them to call me anything else.

BernardBlack · 09/05/2015 06:31

Does anyone else hate businesses that use nicknames? I wouldn't ever use Stevo's Plumbing, for example, it just sounds like he's going to be flaky...

Royalsighness · 09/05/2015 06:32

I've always hated them, since school and I have no idea why! I just can't stand them.

SoupDragon · 09/05/2015 06:36

And yet you all post here with nicknames... Wink

CatchIt · 09/05/2015 06:50

They're all men though aren't they?! I knew a Pistol (!?) and actually dated a guy nicknamed Dogga and never knew his real name! outs self

MakeHayRidesAgain · 09/05/2015 07:08

I have a nickname from university, used to differentiate between the three of us with the same name in the football team. My small group still call me that, and I love it even though it makes me sound like a male Russian weightlifter! It reminds me of good times and close friends.

I agree about child nicknames. My youngest daughter has (IMO) one of the most beautiful sounding names there is, and yet her father insists on shortening it to something that sounds like you are clearing your throat, especially when he does it in a fake French accent. All.The.Time. Thankfully he's not here much and I insist that the other two children do not use it, ever.

OurGlass · 09/05/2015 07:22

Totally agree OP. My DH seems to know a lot of people like this and when he talks about them I pretend I don't hear or I ask for their full name before I can commit to the conversation. Yes, I'm that sad.

elQuintoConyo · 09/05/2015 07:31

And Steve. And Mark. I've known Maidstone Mark, Chatham Mark, Marky Mark (obv not THE Marky Mark), Hamburger, Moses, Flying (cos he didn't give a flying).

Funnily enough, all the Steves have just been Steves.

I've been known as Ra-Ra and Dockers - nothing remotly connected to my name. I don't have one now... but I'd quite like to Blush

NobodyLivesHere · 09/05/2015 07:32

I didn't know my stepdads real name til I'd known him for about 3 years.
And yes to Wales, my dad still goes by his nickname and he's almost 70. I suspect many people wouldn't know who he was if I said his actual name.

ScrambedEggAndToast · 09/05/2015 07:33

Aww, I think it's nice. Don't be so miserable OP. If you hate nicknames so much, why haven't you put your full name and title as your screen name?!!

MyHeadIsItchy · 09/05/2015 07:36

I like adult nicknames. One of our friends had a nickname at college which both DH and I still use and our children now call him that too. It's not a rude one and honestly I can't think of him as his real name.

Also dh had a big group of male friends at uni where there were three Marks, we still use all their nicknames too. It's not an affectation, they were called that solidly for four years and now it's their names in our group although I suspect nowhere else!I like it and it's more an affection thing as none of the names are (particularly) insulting.

Having said all that, there is no way I would use the nickname 'big tits' for a 40yr+ woman!

BareGorillas · 09/05/2015 07:40

DH has a 'friend' they all refer to as 'fucking Keith' because every other word he utters is a swear word.

And then there's 'Dave knees' who has huge legs and wears shorts all year round.

RedButtonhole · 09/05/2015 07:52

I'm 26 and still get called by a nickname related to my appearance. My best friends dad called me it when I was wee and several people still use it, I don't mind.

I know three brothers, 60+ who are all known by their nicknames, the names have no relation to their first names, surname, job etc. They don't even know themselves why they are called that but they are never known as anything else.

alwayshavepeckham · 09/05/2015 07:52

I love nicknames, they're fun and inclusive. We have Uncle Banger, Cousin Mabel (not a cousin & really called Jackie) , Bear and Tommo.

Also, all these DC called Frederick, Maximillian, Sebastian would sound better as Fred, Max & Seb IMO.

RedButtonhole · 09/05/2015 07:53

My blood boils when people shorten DS James to Jim or Jimmy though.

Charlotte3333 · 09/05/2015 08:57

I was always Lottie as a child, which drove my Mum bonkers as she hates nicknames. DS1 is known to his friends as Blondie and DS2 is nicknamed Fudge. No idea where Fudge came from (Blondie is simply because he's got hair as bright as the sun) but as DS2 (Fudge) is beginning school this September we've had to begin calling him his proper name, and when he writes his name he writes his given name and then Fudge. Which will thrill his teachers I'm sure.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2015 09:46

Nicknames fine for children.

If you know an adult's real name then no need for nicknames, it's a bit weird.

BallsforEarrings · 09/05/2015 10:10

Year's ago I had an ex who everyone knew as (name of a large animal)

I would only call him John (names have been changed to protect the innocent!)

He complained that only his mother called him John and I should call him (large animal).

I called him John.

BallsforEarrings · 09/05/2015 10:11

Years not Year's Shock - losing my mind!
