AIBU to hope that there might be something (anything?) good to come out of a new Tory Government?

Or are we doomed?

Bourdic Europe is the thorn in the Tories side. I guarantee the knives will soon be out! I fully expect the back benchers to start squeaking about the referendum before thr year is out!

We might get an actual socialist to lead the Labour Party. Someone who says "we take care of poor, sick, elderly and young people, and we do it because it is the right thing to do". Or maybe I'm just dreaming

Ok, I've seen the word socialist bandied about on here a lot today, so I've been reading up on it tonight. I've obviously heard of the term, but was curious to know exactly what it entailed.
So basically, from my understanding, true socialism is a case of do away with all money, as the Government want to control it all for you and give everyone exactly the same.
No accumulating wealth, nobody's allowed to have more money than anyone else.
Well, bollocks to that. Where's the incentive to work hard and promote yourself if no matter what you do you've got to accept the handouts that the Government deem you worthy to have?
Not to mention the level of state interference.
Feel free to correct me (politely, please) if I've got anything wrong.
Always willing to learn and see new viewpoints.

The tax-free allowance will increase from £10,600 to £12,500.
Minimum wage up to £8 per hour within 5 years.
Some help for first-time buyers.
The changes that have allowed people to access their pensions will stay (Labour might have changed that back).
Double the amount paid for weekly childcare if your children are 3-4 years old.
A freeze on commuter fares for 5 years.
Just trying to pick up on some things that might be encouraging for lower earning working people. Probably waste of time.

Exactly. What on earth can be bad about increasing the threshold to lift people out of tax, putting up minimum wage and helping out first time buyers?! Not to mention freezing commuter fares.Confused

AIBU to hope that there might be something (anything?) good to come out of a new Tory Government?

stability, strength, growth?

development of a less dependant and entitled mindset?

sorting out the country's finances?

Many Policies being quoted upthread as good things e.g. Raising tax free allowance to take people out of tax, pension changes, minimum wage increase... Are lib dem policies.

The lib dems did a whole lot of good in the coalition IMO and I am very sad to see them gone from government and so many wiped out of westminster all together.

I hope the conservatives have learned a few things from their time in coalition and some of the moderate influence will live on. However with such a slim majority it may be difficult, as the more reasonable conservatives (IMO that includes cameron) may be beholden to the more "swivel eyed" members. I agree with the view upthread that there is going to be infighting over Europe.

Other than the eu referendum which is an awful prospect, we can also look forward to the removal of the human rights act and introduction of snoopers charter among other things... :( The liberal influence will be missed.

I do think this result has been good for business and the city but im sure the Europe question will cause plenty of uncertainty over the next couple of years so it's not like we have real stability.

The ticking time bomb which is universal credit will blow up in their faces.

People who don't know/remember what it is like to live under a conservative government will now see one in all its glory.

The conservatives will have to take responsibility for what happens in this parliament rather than blaming labour or using the Lib Dems as a shield.

This is a bit of a silver lining but Boris becoming a MP and stepping down as Mayor in preparation for a leadership bid is now scuppered.

LotusLight · 09/05/2015 10:34

It will be good but not simple because the majority is not huge and there was more support for UKIP than SNP so hard to ensure everyone's views are respected in the UK. I agree that the referendum will cause uncertainty and if I were the Tories i would get it over with quickly and have a very simple question. "Should the UK leave the EU - yes or no". I suspect most people will vote to stay in as they did with Scotland so we can then get back to business.

Sixweekstowait · 09/05/2015 12:30

Oh Lotus? Have you asked the owners of the press yet what they want re Europe? Look at the % UKIP got - we'll vote to stay in?

susyot Boris has become an MP, will stand down from Mayor next year at the end of his term and Dave has said he will not lead the govt in 2020, so leadership bid all present and correct..
